*** This comment may contain spoilers ***
The episode does a creditable job of continuing Irene's storyline when all the main players are needed for other episodes but basically we're left with also-rans like Alf and Charlie chewing things over and indulging in more Angelo bashing. In the circumstances, cutting Geoff out of the episode was probably a bad idea.
The episode manages to hold the interest with the arrival of Gardy. Despite Nicole's claim that he weirds her out, he doesn't seem too objectionable yet although we know by the end of the episode that he and Roman share a dark secret. The exact details of the secret are either a nice bit of continuity or a rather annoying retcon that further ruin an already implausible past storyline.Nicole and Ruby's reaction to seeing Gardy is faintly hysterical, although they seem to be friends purely because everyone else she talks to doesn't like her at the moment.
Another character who surprises is John Palmer.Structurally he seems to be the bad guy but his speech to Alf and the others at the surf club actually makes a lot of sense and we know from what we've seen before that Hugo is being less than truthful.Trey and Nicole's romance is hampered by a thudding lack of chemistry.Trey just seems wet now he's no longer a bully and the scene where he and Xavier square up to each other is one of the least macho moments in the show's history.
