FAQ

Do I need to watch the other Stargate shows to understand Stargate Universe?
Why doesn't Destiny require the ATA (Ancient Technology Activation) gene to access her technology?
Why don't they use the communications stones to get someone like Jennifer Keller, Carson Beckett, Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson, Rodney McKay, and/or Radek Zalenka to help?

Slow start, not convinced yet..., 5 October 2009

I'm a fan of both previous Stargates, and was definitely hoping this followed suit. But the acting was unconvincing. The Senator's daughter better have more to offer than the occasional brains but otherwise teary eyed helplessness whenever her guy (dad, boyfriend, buddy, whatever) is in jeopardy. And the preview for the next episode seems to imply that she hooks up with the young strapping lieutenant in charge. Sorry, too predictable, not interested, not at all. Rush is a better actor but his character is a flat stereotype, the "rebellion" was entirely predictable, yawn, and I knew the Senator was going to sacrifice himself in the shuttle a good 10 minutes before it happened. The big music couldn't save the scene.

On the good side: the court martial threat scene between the lieutenant and the colonel was fun, Ely is refreshingly goofy (I expected "civilian in military world" humor, but his commentary into the floating camera endeared me to him). I'm liking the technology presented, the underlying premise (stuck on an advanced ship on autopilot for unknown reasons) and I definitely like the blond medic...

Chloe and that lieutenant need to learn to act, and the writers need to make Rush and the lieutenant into 3 dimensional characters. And stop trying to imitate the darkness and "grittiness" of BSG. That's a different show, the atmosphere works there, but it doesn't fit here.

All in all, the next few episodes will tell, but it's a slow start either way. If I wasn't a Stargate fan, I'd be writing this off already.
