The film's backstory is influenced by Erich von Daniken's theories of "ancient astronauts," which claim that ancient humans had access to extraterrestrial travel. The film (fictitiously) suggests that thousands of years ago, an advanced Asian civilization from Earth seeded a human population on what is now Sheenyana's planet (presumably in the Alpha Centauri star system, based on a comment by Dr. Hanson that they have traveled just over four light years). While no other films are currently slated, Hughes has conceived the "Food for the Gods" storyline as merely the first chapter of a expanding saga, in which Sheenyana's trials would continue in an outlined trilogy spanning twenty years of searching for her people's incredible interstellar origins and discovering their ultimate and surprising future in "City for the Gods" and "Destiny for the Gods." moreQuotes:
