A movie that causes one to remember, reflect and discuss is a very rare movie and probably one not made in Hollywood-- such is the case with An Education. Diane and I saw this film yesterday in Fremantle and we were both totally absorbed by its truthfulness, its accuracy and its (perhaps unexpectedly) gentleness. The coming of age of a young girl on the doorstep of adulthood is an often examined subject and Nick Hornby, at least to my standards, avoided the pitfalls that litter the pathway of many scripts written by lesser writers. I cannot speak highly enough for the acting principals led by Sarsgaard and Pike; they played masterful roles, as did every other actor on screen. Truthfully, there was not a weak link in the entire film. Diane was particularly moved by the basic predicament of a young woman who saw the enticing situations available to adults, an adulthood for which she was prepared but unavailable to her on her current path (reading English at Oxford). However, and this is the big however, there were obstacles in that path to adulthood that she did not, could not, foresee and therein lies the meat of this wonderful time piece set just as English society, in an inescapable metaphor, in the early Sixties is about to explode in its own societal version of the personal drama played out on our screen. An Education is a wonderful movie and I recommend it to any thinking person.
