Fun Stuff

Trivia:
The movie shows Earhart finishing third in the first Santa Monica-to-Cleveland Women's Air Derby in 1929, but does not explain why. At the last stop before the final leg of the race to Cleveland, Earhart and her friend Ruth Nichols were tied for first. Nichols took off right before Earhart, but her aircraft clipped a tractor on the runway and flipped over. Instead of taking off, Earhart ran to Ruth's plane to drag her to safety. After Earhart was sure that Nichols was not seriously hurt, she took off for Cleveland but finished third largely due to her delayed takeoff. more
Goofs:
Factual errors: The USCGC Itasca is called the USS Itasca by its crew. Vessels commissioned in the U.S. Coast Guard are refer to as USCGC or CGC (Coast Guard Cutter) and not USS, as in a U.S. Navy vessel. more
Quotes:
George Putnam: Come back to me.
Amelia Earhart: Always.

I came home a short time ago after seeing what I consider an excellent motion picture, and I have been seeing motion pictures for almost 75 years. I would recommend thus film for just about anyone over the age of five. What a pleasure seeing a movie without foul language (I'm not a prude - I use explicit words all the time) and no violence and no car chases. The photography (aerial and land), the sets, the airplanes (real or models or computerized), the costuming AND THE ACTING (particularly by Richard Gere and Hillary Swank) were all great, but what do I know? -- I'm just an average screen viewer.

There were two errors that I noticed. Too many of the press cameras were 4X5 Graphics, some too new for the age shown. Almost all of the flashguns on these cameras were not around until the late 1940's or early 1950's, not the 1920's and 1930's. There were other cameras in use then, none of which were used for this film. Several of the cameras (view cameras) were acceptable. The other error I believe was when two enlisted Coast Guard sailors saluted each other in the radio room of the USCG cutter Itasca. I do not believe that this is at all correct.

Go see this really wonderful movie and enjoy it. Having watched it, if I had the money I would start taking flying lessons; if I had the money I would go on an around-the-world air trip, but not in a Lockheed Electra.
