Sam Raimi finally returns to his roots more than 15 years after 1992's "Army of Darkness", and boy was the wait worth it.
'Drag Me to Hell" is a grueling, hideous, brilliant and perfectly executed traditional goth/supernatural horror film with dark comedic elements. Familiar with the Evil Dead trilogy? (Evil Dead, EDII and AOD) If not, check them out immediately!! From the intense and masterly crafted opening credits to the shocking and just plain brilliant ending, the movie is terrifying and hilarious at the same time. Alison Lohman is Christine Brown, who, after "shaming" an old gypsy/demon, is cursed to be dragged to Hell to burn for eternity in 3 days. Within those days she is tormented by a demon as the curse builds and builds to the horrific climax. While very dark and macabre, especially for a PG-13 film (which, in my opinion, doesn't effect the movie whatsoever!!), the movie retains a good sense of dark humor throughout, without throwing it around too much and ruining the overall scare factor.
Of the Evil Dead trilogy, the movie much resembles Evil Dead II, and if you're a fan of the trilogy at all, this movie will bring tears to your eyes.
I don't give out 10s much to horror movies at all, as they're usually reserved for classics such as 'The Thing' and the ED trilogy itself, but after experiencing such a great movie, I couldn't help it. Of the last 20 years, this is definitely one of the most perfect, scary, entertaining and well-done horror movies ever made. If it takes another 10 years for Evil Dead IV to be made, I'll wait, especially if Sam and his brother pop out something as great as this.
"Drag Me to Hell" gets a much well-deserved 10 out of 10. Do NOT pass this one up in theaters horror fans!
