The fact that this film can be made is an insult to human integrity, 14 April 2009

Okay, I'll admit that I'm a tough one to please, and that after seeing the TV show, I wasn't expecting anything grand. But I just had to write a review. Just watching that awful excuse for a children's film made me feel I was losing IQ points.

First of all, we all know what this movie was. It was an attempt to kill off (not literally) the Hannah Montana character because the "beautiful and talented" Miley wants to "spread her wings" and be able to work on bigger projects. This movie is supposed to be the final note on the subject, so Miley can leave her Hannah persona behind for good, while making a sh*tload of money from seven-year-old girls.

For a teen idol, or rather, a seven-year-old's idol, Miley is bizarrely untalented. Her voice is fine for the audience she targets. Severely edited, I don't believe the girl can sing a note, but good enough for a seven-year-old's indiscriminate ears. Honestly, they'll fall in love with anything as long as it says "Disney" on it.

Miley's "acting ability" is the biggest concern. The utter lack of character development in this show (and I view the movie as just an extension of the series) is astounding. Miley's acting consists only of shouting, jerky arm movements, forced laughs, and unpleasant facial expressions. Her father is equally talented. His performance consists of, well, a monotone voice and painful "hick" jokes. No arm movement whatsoever.

The plot of the movie is hardly worth mentioning, it's so contrived. Girl has two choose between the life of a popstar and a regular girl, while "finding herself". Fortunately, there's no laugh track. I was appalled that this is top at the Box Office, when it's so obviously awful. Children's entertainment has fallen so much in recent years. Admittedly, I'm only nineteen, but I've seen a huge change in the quality. Disney has become a joke, aside from Pixar. They're still cool. :D.

The enduring popularity of non-talents like Miley among young children makes it difficult for real child actors to get noticed. If they aren't Disney, then they are lost in the shuffle. I find this strange. For instance, I recently saw an unusually skillful performance by the young boy cast in "Knowing". That kid really has talent, and was able to portray complex emotions in a way very uncommon in Hollywood. I don't know his name, and I assume most people don't. But you can bet we all know Miley Cyrus' name Compared to the brilliant performances given by child actors of the past, such as River Phoenix and Brad Renfro, today's top teen idols are shameful. I can at least find comfort in knowing that once this is over, Miley will hop on the "Lindsay Lohan" train and disappear from the public eye. She doesn't have the ability to make it in real movies, or the voice to make it with older people. But honestly, that girl is so obnoxious. I hope she gets out of the spotlight and stays there, where she belongs.
