A phenomenal film I'm glad I saw.

I just saw this film in Spokane, but I almost didn't. I was thinking about maybe skipping this and going to the one on Tuesday instead, but boy am I glad I didn't. Fix is a wonderful film that adeptly rolls comedy, drama, and brilliant melancholy into a package that is really unlike anything I've seen. Director Tao Ruspoli takes us on a journey that feels so real, I sometimes wondered if it really was. It is shot using the first person hand held camera technique made popular by films like The Blair Witch Project and more recently Cloverfield, but this offers a fresh perspective on the style. It's about a pair of filmmakers Bella (Olivia Wilde) and Milo (Director Tao Ruspoli) who try to get Milo's brother Leo (Shawn Andrews) into rehab by 8:00 pm, or else he gets locked up for three years. And just to get Leo into the facility, they have to raise $5,000 from scratch and a stolen car.

As Leo takes Bella and Milo on this journey through an LA unknown to the two of them, the two documentary makers look at it all sometimes in wonder, sometimes in disdain, and often in incredulity. They travel through mansions in Beverly Hills, Chop Shops in LA, housing projects in Watts, and the tearing down of the biggest urban farm in the country. This whole ordeal in some ways strengthens the brother's friendship, and definitely changes the way that Milo looks upon Leo. I have to mention the amazing performance by Shawn Andrews, of Dazed And Confused fame. He, acting with the screenplay, is the source of much of the humor and wit of the movie, which plays a vital role in the overall impact of the film. The whole cast is great, I don't believe that there was a person among them who hit one false note. Mr. Ruspuli attended and spoke at the screening, and he mentioned that they had not yet found a distributor for the film, and a real theatrical release was unlikely. I hope they get one, because Fix is a movie that definitely deserves it.
