Contains all the ingredients for a first-order soap opera and then takes it all down a gear, with devastating effect. From the creative pen of SEACHANGE's Deb Cox (whose long list of outstanding successes includes KANGAROO PALACE, JANUS, SECRETS, STAN & GEORGE's NEW LIFE, AFTER THE DELUGE, DEAD LETTER OFFICE and Simone de Beauvoir's BABIES), this is strong and genuinely feel-good fantasy in the true SEACHANGE sense. Its humour and its tragedy retain a Gardnerian honesty in the characters of Eve, Bev Flick (Bader), Lizzy Dellora (Beck) and especially Art, this series shines with humanity. The inclusion of Carides and particularly Bisley's characters as vulturous developers at first threatens to undo the script, but they only add to the fantasy that envelops Broken Bay (a fictional Byron). If Josh seems a little too sure of himself, and Dale the wayward nurse (Budge) and Owen the lawyer (Garvey) a little too sagely, then you're probably right: but this is about the optimism of hopelessness, the richness of commitment, the fantasy of dreams and disillusions. Perhaps the finale might put some off, but look closer: there are less resolutions than what at first appears. A nice soundtrack very occasionally gets in the way (there are one or two too many collage scenes), but it is very nice. An all-star cast works perfectly and watch out for Craig Stott.
