I first encountered Yannick Bisson, the actor who plays Murdoch, in Sue Thomas FBI. I liked him for his clean good looks at his precise pronunciation. I later discovered he was born in Montreal which might account for how pleasing his way of speaking is to my ear. It is a somewhat artificial way of speaking, but that is part of the mystery genre.
Murdoch is unfailingly polite and does not resort to violence. He is one of the most likable police characters in fiction.
The show has a bit of the flavour of Sherlock Holmes. Murdoch is well ahead of his time in forensics, and often foreshadows today's technology. The writing is clever with lots of twists.
Murdoch lives in universe something like a Disnified animatronic version of the old west (actually Ontario). Everyone is clean, beautifully groomed and dressed, not at all like the realistic Silverado or McCabe & Mrs. Miller.
