Mixed feelings over this particular mixed animation

I saw this last month at the 2007 Palm springs International Festival of Short Films and the audience at my screening seemed to enjoy it. Director/writer Jim Goodall was on hand for a Q&A on the film. This is a comedy about Gill the goldfish (voice of Sean Cullen) who lives in a small glass bowl and is sick of his monotonous existence and longs for a female goldfish companion. He constantly being aggravated by the Kid (Matthew Peart) and his tapping on the bowl and habit of making faces at him. Gill feels that suicide is the only way out of his situation until he meets the goldfish of his dreams (voice of Tara Spencer-Nairn). This is a mixed live action/computer generated animation short with animation by Jesse Schmidt, cinematography by d. Gregor Hagey, sound by John Laing, music by Jim McGrath and edited by Joey Burke. Max Reid co-wrote the story along with Goodall and produced by Jim Lenart of Storyteller Pictures. The story is fairly weak but the voice-over by Cullen is good and the film looks good. I realize the part of the Kid is to be campy and overboard but the actor doing it is pretty bad. This may have worked better being all animation instead of just an animated fish set against real interior sets and with a live actor and a live dog. I would give this a 6.0 out of 10.
