Dystopian Outlook Continues...with Lars von Trier's 'Planet Melancholia'

Lars von Trier is taking on the disaster film genre on a micro-budgeted English-language project which will include a (no surprises here) a pessimistic ending. Planet Melancholia is due to shoot in Germany and Sweden next summer. - Unless he has a mental breakdown, in 2011 (more precisely, Cannes) we should be receiving the art-house answer to Matt Reeves' Cloverfield. TrustNordisk will begin pre-sales at the Berlin Festival in February - this will easily be a sought after title especially after the overall impact that Antichrist will have had. Miller cast in Yogi

23 November 2009 1:08 PM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Add another name to the big screen version of Yogi Bear. After a funny and gutsy audition video for the part of Ranger Smith, T.J. Miller nabbed it. Miller was brought into audition twice, then decided to jokingly make a video of him improvising with a live bear, that was directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts. The Cloverfield actor, who was most recently seen in Extract was surprised when the chairman of Warner Brothers, Barry M. Meyer, told him he had the role, "I'm excited about this... »

T.J. Miller Creates Yogi Bear Audition Tape with Actual Bear; Gets Cast in Movie

22 November 2009 1:59 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Most of you probably know T.J. Miller as Hud, the frazzled cameraman/comic relief in Matt Reeves' Cloverfield. Turns out that since that performance, Miller has been angling for a role in the forthcoming adaptation of Yogi Bear. While cartoon-to-screen adaptations have typically ended up being abominations, this one at least looks like it has a pretty good cast going for it, with Anna Faris, Justin Timberlake, and Dan Aykroyd signing on a few weeks ago. According to The Apiary, Miller had already been called in to audition twice for the role. Afterwards, as a joke, Miller worked with filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts to create the below audition tape, in which Miller interacts with a real-life bear. The video somehow made its way to Barry Meyer, the chairman of Warner Brothers, resulting in an offer for the part of Ranger Jones. Presumably, Ranger Jones will be a live-action role, while »

Zombies Collapse in Iowa Cornfield

16 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The filmmakers behind the indie zombie flick Collapse just contacted Fangoria with a few photos from their production which wrapped appropriately on Halloween. Co-directed by Jason Bolinger and "Insane" Mike Saunders (frequent collaborators on other indie fare such as The Bag Man and Lights, Camera, Kill), the film stars Chris Mulkey (of the recent werewolf pic Dark Moon Rising, Cloverfield, First Blood, and more) as Robert Morgan, a small-town farmer that finds himself fortifying his home to protect his family from a zombie outbreak.

Toby Sells (Zombieland, My Super Psycho Sweet 16) handled make-up FX for the zombies, which the producers tell Fango are of the "classic, slow" variety, while Sells gave them the more modern "freshly dead" look. Scream Queen Linnea Quigley makes an appearance in the film as well, alongside Karen Landry (Mulkey's real-life wife).

Check out the photos below, then hit up the film's Facebook page for a whopping 4500+ more. »

Simple Yet Effective Poster for Matt Reeves’ Let the Right One In Remake

16 November 2009 6:39 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Am I excited that the guy responsible for “Cloverfield” is helming the remake of Tomas Alfredson’s “Let the Right One In?” Not really. I suppose, if you’re illiterate or have something against Swedish cinema, the Americanized version is a good thing, as it allows you to experience this strangely heartwarming vampire story without having to listen to a foreign language while reading all of those unsightly subtitles. My attempt to disguise my bitterness towards this project has ultimately failed, though I will try my best to reserve judgment until I’ve seen the finished product for myself. If it ends up being another “Quarantine,” I will weep. Openly. In case you missed it, here’s the premise: An alienated 12-year-old boy befriends a mysterious young newcomer in his small New Mexico town and discovers an unconventional path to adulthood. The kind individuals operating Horror-Movies.ca recently revealed the »

Geek Alert: The Art of Star Trek Comes to Life

16 November 2009 4:19 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Just before the weekend hit, we received an awesome little package here at Reject HQ: several copies of the latest release from the folks at Titan Books, Star Trek: The Art of the Film. Shortly after finishing my second go-round with J.J. Abrams' Star Trek on Blu-ray (which I have chronicled in my in-depth review), I took a look at this new book to see what was what. And as I soon found out, Titan Books has once again delivered a companion book that is a must-have for any fan of the film. Combining beautiful concept art from this epic space adventure with hi-res shots from the film, The Art of the Film walks us through all of the design that went into this franchise reboot. Everything is in there, from creature design -- a la the "cousin of Cloverfield" monster from the ice planet Delta Vega -- to the design of the bridges of »

Martyn’s Top Ten Vampire Films

11 November 2009 7:43 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

The vampire has been a key figure in folklore, literature, television and cinema. Its popularity, at present, has never been so high. It is easy to see the appeal: immortality and sex. Since death is the fate that awaits us all, a creature that we invent and imbue with an indeterminate lifespan, captivates the collective imagination like no other. Due to sexual liberalism and relaxed censorship of the 1960s, the erotic sensibilities inherent in the mythology were allowed to fruition in cinema. What once was implied, could now be shown in all its sexy glory (see the films of Jean Rollin). Gothic horror and romanticism may be the classic home of the vampire, but in cinema, they have found a new place to spread wider-reaching nightmares.

In recent times, the everlasting monster has been tamed. Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga saw them turn into something akin to vegetarians and teen heart-throbs, »

Afm '09: First Look at 'And Soon the Darkness' Remake

7 November 2009 2:23 PM, PST | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

Another film we caught a promo trailer for was And Soon The Darkness, a really stylish film from director Marcos Efron that features two of the hottest babes in horror, Amber Heard (Mandy Lane, Zombieland, The Stepfather) and Odette Yustman (Cloverfield, The Unborn). Set in Argentina, the remake tells the story of two American girls on a bike-riding trip in a remote part of the country. When one of them goes missing, the other must find her before darkness falls and her worst fears are realized. The original was set in France and tackled the idea of how vulnerable a stranger in a strange land can be. Adriana Barraza and Karl Urban also star. Check out new details and first stills below! »

Filming will also take place in various other locations in New Mexico before returning to Albuquerque to wrap in January.

J.J. Abrams Is Secretly Radiating Someone

5 November 2009 3:16 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

J.J. Abrams has a sci-fi project in development. No, not Star Trek 2. Or that other movie you're thinking of. Or the other. Yes, there's yet another sci-fi project with Abrams' name on it, and as usual, he's trying to keep it top secret. Pajiba got word of 500 Rads, a project that's budgeted at $25 million, being set up in Europe, and will probably be in the vein of Cloverfield and 28 Days Later. Which means it could be anything, really. Jeff Pinkner, a veteran writer from Abrams TV shows like Alias and Lost, started work on a script, but some other people are apparently jumping in to finish it up. Oh, and "rads" probably refers to "absorbed radiation dose," which Pajiba predicts might mean that there are zombie-type creatures lurking in this film somewhere. We can probably assume that Abrams isn't directing, given the zillion other projects he's got going on, »

J.J. Abrams to Produce Hasbro’s Micronauts Movie

5 November 2009 1:12 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The Wall Street Journal (via Coming Soon) is reporting today that J.J. Abrams, whom you may know as the director of Star Trek and producer of Lost, is in talks to produce a movie about the Japanese interchangable toys Micronauts -- 3.75-inch tall toys which were used in an inter-connected design. The rights to the project were acquired by Hasbro, who will base the film on the Micronauts comic series published by Marvel Comics, Image Comics and Devil's Due Publishing. The series was first published in 1979. In a curious quote, J.J. Abrams speaks about those who doubt whether a board game or science fiction toy should be accorded star status: "Sometimes, when someone is not a celebrity and you are casting them in a role, everyone who is in a seat of authority voices questions about that actor's talent, sex appeal, looks, ability -- their everything," he says. "But then they get the role, and »

J.J. Abrams’ Next Secret Project: 500 Rads

5 November 2009 10:34 AM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

In the summer of 2007, we started to hear whispers of a monster movie under the producer wing of “Lost” and “Alias” creator J.J. Abrams.  After months of speculation and cryptic viral marketing, Cloverfield stormed theaters and wreaked havoc on New York City.

Now there is a report from Pajiba about another secret project in development at Abrams’ Bad Robot label. It’s called 500 Rads. Well, for now. I wouldn’t put it past him to create this under a pseudonym and stage a big reveal leading up to its release.

A rad is a radiation absorption dose, which suggests a nuclear disaster movie of some sort. As we all know from watching too many movies, radiation brings mutants and sometimes… wait for it… zombies. The article likens the new Abrams concept to Cloverfield and 28 Days Later.

Abrams is making this on a relatively small budget ($25 million) and planning a European location, »

What Is J.J. Abrams’ ‘500 Rads?’

5 November 2009 9:04 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Remember when word of a mysterious project called Cloverfield first surfaced? Before we knew it, we were getting a movie about a mostly unseen giant monster causing chaos in New York. Well, it seems that J.J. Abrams might be bringing us something in the same top-secret vein with a project that is being referred to as 500 Rads.

The guys over at Pajiba (thanks to /Film for pointing us to this) have an inside source (who they’re keeping nameless, for good reason) that has given some details on 500 Rads, a project that Abrams and his production company, Bad Robot, are apparently developing in secret.

So what’s it all about? Well, the little info we’ve got beyond the title tells us that it’s in the same vein as Cloverfield and 28 Days Later. Pajiba helpfully points out that a “rad” is an “absorbed radiation dose.” The guys over at »

J.J. Abrams’ Next Mystery Project: 500 Rads

5 November 2009 9:04 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Looks like the rumour mill is starting up again for another under the radar J.J. Abrams movie that is slowly being developed in secrecy -- just like Cloverfield was a couple of years ago. The folks over at Pajiba [1] recently got word from an inside source that Abrams and his Bad Robot production company are working on a new project called 500 Rads, and while they don't know exactly what it's about, they do have a few intriguing ideas. The term "rads" refers to an "absorbed radiation dose", and since the movie is being described as having similarities to both Cloverfield and 28 Days Later, they are speculating that it could be a zombie, viral plague or nuclear post-apocalyptic scenario of some sort. Lost, Alias and Fringe writer Jeff Pinkner has reportedly been the man working on the script thus far. The movie is budgeted at $25 million and will shoot somewhere in »

J.J. Abrams Plotting a Secret Movie; Should Be ‘Rad’

4 November 2009 9:40 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

If we never see the fine folks from Pajiba again, we now know why. They are reporting today on a film project so secretive, it threatens their very lives to even whisper its name. Fortunately for the rest of the world -- those of us with inquiring minds -- they spoke its name, 500 Rads. It is the latest project from J.J. Abrams and his production company, Bad Robot. An inside source has said that Rads, which is currently in script stages, is yet another Cloverfield style production. Abrams is setting it up on the cheap -- budgeting $25 million. He's keeping it out of the way -- with a low profile European shoot. And he's not talking about it, at all (at least not yet). According to the source, Fringe and Lost writing staff member Jeff Pinker was originally working on the script, but has now returned to work on Fringe. That »

J.J. Abrams' Next New Super Top Secret Project: 500 Rads?

4 November 2009 2:16 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Can you remember back to July 3rd, 2007? You were probably sitting in a theater, and some random trailer started playing that had footage from a surprise birthday party for some guy named Rob. That was the start of Cloverfield. They hadn't even shot any real footage, it was a super secret project, and that first trailer captured everyone's interest. Jump ahead a few years and now J.J. Abrams is done with Star Trek. We don't yet know if he's directing the sequel and his go-to guys from Cloverfield (Matt Reeves, Drew Goddard) are both off doing other projects. So could he be working on another secret project? One called 500 Rads? Pajiba (via SlashFilm) claims to have some information regarding this secret project. "J.J. Abrams and his production company, Bad Robot, are secretly developing a movie called 500 Rads." They go on to say the budget is supposedly around $25 ... »

‘Let Me In’ Begins Production, New Cast Names

4 November 2009 12:10 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Production has officially begun on Matt ReevesLet Me In, an American remake of the Swedish horror hit Let the Right One In.  Principal photography started Monday, November 2 in New Mexico and will continue into January.

Kodi Smith-McPhee (The Road) is starring as Owen and Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass) is Abby, the mysterious neighbor.  Richard Jenkins plays her guardian, the key adult role in the film.

They’re joined now by Elias Koteas as the policeman, Cara Buono as Owen’s mother, and Sasha Barrese as Virginia.

Reeves (Cloverfield) has assembled a decent cast, but I’m still skeptical.  The original is an excellent vampire film and one of my favorite horror movies of the decade, so I’m naturally resisting any “new” version of the story.

CEO of Hammer Films Simon Oakes said, “The brilliance of [the original] story deserves to be seen by audiences on a wide scale and we are »

EW Questions Need for Let The Right One In Remake

3 November 2009 5:11 PM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Not a surprise, but so do I.  Apparently, the powers that be are running low on 1980s slasher films to rip off, and are stretching their reach out to Europe to steal material and outright kick originality in the crotch.  In EW's Popwatchers section today,  Margaret Lyons holds out little hope for the remake of the critically lauded Let The Right One In, with its shift in location from the snowy desolation of Europe to the mesas of New Mexico and its change in title to Let Me In.  And her picture of the new kids playing the roles (which I'll include below) can't help the validity of the project, even if she does compliment the choice of one of them.

As for my own thoughts, I've seen the original and thought it was something daring and new.  But if Matt Reeves, he of Cloverfield, attempts to make this basically »

Vampire Remake 'Let Me In' Starts Shooting

3 November 2009 1:27 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Plenty of people are miffed that Overture Films is even making a new version of Let the Right One In roughly a year after the Swedish film made a big impact on critics and arthouse crowds. Of course, the film didn't really register with mainstream audiences, so Overture picked up the rights to the novel and is giving it an English language once-over in hopes of attracting more than a few hundred thousand filled seats.

Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) is directing the near-immediate remake, now called Let Me In, and filming began on Monday in Albuquerque. That's one of the things I'm encouraged by with this update, actually. By moving it from the dead of winter to possibly another kind of desolation, Reeves invites a new kind of atmosphere to his film, and that can impact everything from cinematography to tone to character.

There's no guarantee of that, and since New »
