Laura Dern will join the cast of Little Fockers, according to MTV. In this latest installment of the Meet the Parents franchise, she will play the headmistress of an elementary school.
Dern is arguably most famous for her roles in Jurassic Park, October Sky, and several David Lynch movies. She also recently earned a Golden Globe for her performance in HBO's Recount. She joins a cast that already includes Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, Owen Wilson, and Jessica Alba.
The plot of the new movie involves the Fockers (Stiller and Polo) and the changes that result after becoming the parents of twins. Director Paul Weitz talked a little about his take on the story:
[It's] about no matter how you've moved ahead in your life, there's still anxiety and insecurity around the corner for you.
Little Fockers is currently scheduled for a July 30, 2010 release.

Laura Dern is the latest addition to the cast of Little Fockers, the working title for the Meet The Parents sequel. The film, to be directed by Paul Weitz, reunites much of the cast from the previous two installments including Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner and Owen Wilson. Jessica Alba is another recent addition to the cast of the Jane Rosenthal and Jay Roach-produced pic.
The actress, who rose to prominence for her part in David Lynch's twisted, voyeuristic melodrama, Blue Velvet, is set to play the headmistress of the elementary school where the Fockers' children attend.
Dern won a golden globe earlier this year for her performance in HBO's political drama, Recount. She recently signed a deal with the cable network to star in a pilot yet to be penned, which will be produced and directed by the School Of Rock scribe, Mike White. »

Laura Dern will be joining Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner, Owen Wilson and Jessica Alba in Little Fockers; part three of the series that began with Meet the Parents in 2000 and continued With Meet the Fockers in 2004.Dern will pay the headmistress of the elementary school that Gaylord and Pam's children attend, and that Stiller will no doubt burn down, or flood, or bring disaster to in some hilarious unforseen fashion. Sounds like a fun franchise outing for the actress, who has preferred to stay below the studio radar lately, with appearances in low-key fare like Tenderness and Year of the Dog. She won a Golden Globe for her performance in the TV movie Recount, but missed out on an oscar nomination for Inland Empire, despite David Lynch's high-profile campaign. No news yet on whether Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffman are returning for Little Fockers. »

Jay Roach has picked up his lead for his upcoming comedy, Dinner for Schmucks. According to THR, Stephanie Szostak has signed to play the lead in the flick about a group of guys who have weekly dinner parties where they attempt to bring really dumb dudes as guests. Zach Galifianakis, Steve Carrell, and Paul Rudd are all signed on to co-star. Szostack will play the girlfriend of Paul Rudd.s character. The last place you might have noticed her was in 2006's Devil Wears Prada where, presumably, she played a hot chick. Side note, I'm pretty sure she does that every day of her life. It.s odd to see Jay Roach going back to comedy. It isn't that I.m not excited for this (he's usually pretty okay at bringing the laughs). It.s that I saw Recount and saw what he was able to do with a really »

We can add Laura Dern to the long list of big-time movie actresses who've moved into TV roles. Her comedy project with Mike White is moving forward with a pilot order from HBO.
Tentatively titled Enlightened, the single-camera comedy stars Dern as a self-destructive woman who has a spiritual awakening and decides to live an enlightened life. Of course, this creates all sorts of turmoil at home and work.
Dern's knock-out performance as Katherine Harris in 2008's Recount got the attention of HBO. White, her director on the 2007 feature film Year of the Dog, says he's "stoked," noting, "The only thing I can think of cooler than making a show at HBO is doing it with Laura Dern."
HBO continues to be a favorite of mine, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this show fares. I've been a fan of Dern's dating back to her roles in Rambling Rose and Wild at Heart, »

I loved Laura Dern long before she brought Ellen out of the closet.
But her appearance as Ellen’s lesbian crush Susan in “The Puppy Episode” said a lot about Dern’s willingness to support the Lgbt community before Hollywood jumped on the gay rights bandwagon.
In an interview with DeGeneres in 2007, Dern said she didn’t work for a year and a half after the episode aired. But she remained proud to be a part of such a groundbreaking moment in cultural history.
Thankfully, Tptb came to their senses and Dern’s career returned to full speed ahead. Just last year she won a Golden Globe for her performance as Florida politician Katherine Harris in HBO’s movie Recount.
Now HBO has announced that it is bringing Dern back, this time in a comedy series. In Enlightened, Dern plays “a formerly self-destructive woman who, after having a spiritual awakening, »

- The Blacklist (a list of favorite unproduced screenplays making the rounds in Hollywood created by Franklin Leonard) acts as a good indicator of the best original ideas to come out of agents/rep offices and to come out of an industry which is too dependent on sequels, prequels and remakes. So far, we are past the midway point of 2009 and I was curious to update the 2007 list and see, mostly what went into production and which of the top tier scripts were greenlite. From 2007's batch, only five screenplays out of the top sixteen are concrete films that we can speak about. Here is a status update on the top vote getters. 1. Recount by Danny Strong (44 Mentions)Status: Was broadcast on HBO. Jay Roach received directing awards. Laura Dern won a Golden Globe. 2. Farragut North by Beau Willimon (43 Mentions)Status: Was made into a play an nominated for Best Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play. »

There's a new trailer for Shrink, which stars Kevin Spacey as a psychiatrist to the stars undergoing a bit of a mental health crisis himself. It's looks like a nice fit for Spacey, who hasn't really found good material for himself in a lead role since before Beyond the Sea.
Spacey's also producing this film through Trigger Street, which finally found some hits in 2008 with 21 and the HBO Emmy-winner, Recount. But because it doesn't have huge studio backing, the cast is not full of big names; Keke Palmer and Saffron Burrows are probably the most notable other cast members, at least by the strength of their credits.
The film has that quintessential Los Angeles look, and while I have a lot of problems with Los Angeles, they only surface when I'm driving there. So kudos on the sun-drenched cinematography, which adds a little irony to the storm clouds brewing in everyone's story here. »

It's been a little while since Kevin Spacey had a flashy starring role. We've settled for him in supporting parts in stuff like Recount and 21, though he's never stopped bringing his customary intensity and flashes of wit. Now Spacey is ready to take the lead again, in a role that seems tailor-made for him-- criminal Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Spacey has signed on for the starring role in Casino Jack, about how Abramoff's bribery and general ripoffs landed him in jail in 2008. Variety writes that the title has been changed from Bagman, but George Hickenlooper will still be directing the script by Norman Snider. »

Several years ago, when Buffy the Vampire Slayer was going strong, there was a little episode called Superstar. In it, Danny Strong's Jonathan cooked up a pretty powerful mojo that allowed him to be a superstar at everything. In this alternate universe, he did everything from act in The Matrix to fighting vampires better than the slayer. Everyone loved him -- there were billboards, saucy calendar shoots, well, you get the idea. Now it looks like Strong is getting a taste of that, at least as far as political projects are concerned (not so much playing Robin in Losing Lois Lane).
Having tackled Recount for HBO, Empire reports that Strong is now penning a new film called The Butler, based on the Washington Post story: A Butler Well Served by This Election. The story outlined the life of Eugene Allen, an African-American butler who worked at the White House for over three decades, »

Sony Pictures have confirmed a film will be made about the fascinating life story of Eugene Allen, an African-American butler who had served at the White House for over thirty years, surviving and working under eight different presidents. Eugene became news again recently when attention was brought to his and his wife’s support for Barack Obama’s election bid in 2008. Sadly, Eugene’s wife Helene passed away a day before the historic election took place.
The film, to be titled simply as “The Butler”, will be produced by Laura Ziskin and written by Danny Strong. Strong is best known as an actor, especially for nerd Jonathan Levinson in TV’s “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”, but most recently he scripted the excellent “ReCount” for HBO films. His script will be based on Wil Haygood’s original Washington Post article from 2008. The story is expected to examine Allen’s career at »

Laura Ziskin will produce the story about an African-American butler’s career at the White House. Sony picked up the feature rights a few weeks after the presidential election. The story tells of Eugene Allen’s work as a butler for eight presidents all the way from 1952 until 1986 as well as the hope and optimism shared by he and his wife when Barack Obama was about to be elected as president. Sadly, Allen’s wife died the day before the election and was buried on the same day that the article was published. »

Jay Roach's remake of the 1998 French comedy hit "Le Diner de cons" is finally coming together.
According to Variety, Spyglass Entertainment, Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks will team up to develop the film, with Spyglass and Paramount providing the majority of the budget.
Steve Carell and Paul Rudd are on board to star in the project, in which a bunch of friends organize a weekly dinner to which they invite the dumbest people they can find.
The trade says the film will most likely start principal photography in October. "Schmucks" will mark Roach's first big-screen project since 2004's "Meet the Fockers."
Most recently, the filmmaker received a Emmy for his television movie "Recount."
The original "Diner de cons" was directed by Francis Veber and turned into a huge hit. The comedy starred Thierry Lhermitte, Jacques Villeret, Francis Huster and Daniel Prévost. Very funny movie indeed. »

Variety is reporting that Kátia Lund, co-director of City of God (2002) will write and direct a film about Mukhtar Mai, a Pakistani woman who endured a tribal council-sanctioned gang rape and fought back against the system. The film will be produced by Jay Roach (Recount) and Jennifer Perini (Smother).
Roach told Variety, "Kátia wrote a treatment, we took it to every studio, and they all found it inspiring but couldn't imagine financing it." They finally did find funding via a partnership with Ary Digital (Pakistan's first independent TV network) and Passport Capital.
Mai's story made headlines around the world in 2002. After her adolescent brother was accused of sexually assaulting a young woman from another clan, a tribal council ordered that Mai be publicly gang-raped as punishment in order to shame her family. Variety writes, "While most victims of this authorized crime commit suicide rather than exist as a pariah, Mai fought back. »
