This movie was made to capitalize on the huge fan base for the extraordinary HERO television show which aired in 2001. Anyone who is a fan of that show will enjoy this film immensely. I loved it! The acting efforts of most J-Idols make your skin crawl, Kimutaku is a pleasure to watch (though my heart belongs to Otsuka Nene).
The original TV show was something of a cross between Barney Miller and Columbo. Kuryu Kohei, a likable everyman with a weakness for TV shopping, doesn't seem like a hero at first, but as the show progresses, his character grows in stature, and he is, at the end, a creature of great nobility. Viewers who did not witness the growth of the character will have a hard time appreciating the return to innocence that this movie proposes.
Try to imagine how crack-addled Star Trek - The Wrath of Khan appears to someone who never saw the TV series... In comparison, this movie comes out looking pretty good.
