I would rather watch 6teen. I would rather watch Gym Parter's a Monkey. I would rather read the Inheritance Cycle. Anything but this. This show is truly the poor man's Cromartie High School. Concepts taken at the last minute counts for a clever story, and this show's concept is an example of one. A bunch of teen are selected to reap souls & defeat enemies? Not only has this concept been used so many times, the English dubber didn't put any originality into it, making it a dull world where evil stays in the wastelands while good stay in the pretty lands. I know stories that are more horrible than this, but at least they have little originality in them. What a cliché! Characters are unappealing and have no personalities. It's as if they're robots programmed to have one human trait. A serious talking side-kick who seem to save the hero from a lot of Trouble. A naive orange head. A smart yet artful guy in glasses. And let's not forget about the old and wise big guy who always with them. Not only are they stereotypical, they also have unimaginable quotes. And these are just the main protagonists.
The antagonists are just as bad as their counterparts are. A guy in the green & white hat, the main Antagonist, is all mouth but no brains. He sounds tough, but like Rancid Rabbit from CatDog, he get away with anything by making the main character look bad in some episodes. His minions, A Red-Headed Brat & a Shy Pig-Tailed one, are even stupider than he is. Plus, The pig-tailed one is weak. But above all, the whole idea of having two children working for a villain in the story is a reason to call this story derivative because of Dr. Z and his minions on Dinosaur King, who, obviously, have the similar personality. They even like Dinosaur King's Children Slaves except Bleach's are more mature & Darker (not the skin color). And last but not least, let's talk about the boss. What boss? He looks more like a Steal worker than a manager of a shop. Plus, the boss is the smart one of the bad guys. Another stereotypical character. Not once did I see the boss fight Ichigo, but instead the minions has to fight for him. At least Dr. wash bi's Ninja Chimps are more wiser than these morons.
Dialogue doesn't fit with their characters. would I think of Green/White hat guy talking in a villainous voice. Hardly! The Guy with that hat is supposed to be evil, but instead he's out of character with his voice. Same thing for Red-Headed Brat. Jinta sounds like a girl and not like a boy. The Soul Shop buff guy sounds more like a wise man than a villain. It looks as if the producers picked inexperienced voice actors at the last minute, making the non-characters feel awkward.
Bleach (english dub) is like a frame story (a story within a story) like Tak & The Power of Juju, but not as stupid (although Tak & The Power of Juju is stupid too when it comes to gross humor.) If you look at Viva Pinata you don't see Hutson or Prosser Pester in some episodes; you'll see Fergy and Paulie or Huston and Pester or Lanstin and Franklin. This makes a story much more interesting than seeing just Ichigo all the time, especially if he has no character development. If you need another example, boring, your wasting episodes, and you lose the viewers.
I need to talk about one more thing. Sorry for ranting, but I can't stand people not taking me serious about this stuff (even though they don't.) This is how I felt thinking about GoGoRiki. Put some heart-warming scenes in there or put some nice friends for the good guys in the story. I don't want to watch the same villains every time mocking the main character( trust me, after seeing CatDog before it got pulled I got irritated seeing Rancid Rabbit making Cat feel bad & Cat won't do a thing about it.) Putting Tender loving care into a story spices the story. Watch GoGoRiki if you're looking for examples; they're loaded with good songs on every episode.
Overall, The Viz Media version shouldn't deserve those high ratings once you think about it in a literary viewpoint. Any good show, to me, is better than this. This is truly a show made at the last minute. In fact, Adult Swim probably put this on just to fill in the time slot and make money off the viewers who don't know what makes a good story. Like I said, this is the poor man's Cromartie High School.
