Blu-Ray Review: Tiresome ‘Four Christmases’ is Four Too Many

25 November 2009 12:02 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – How has Vince Vaughn become one of the most boring actors in America? It has little to do with his performances and everything to do with his career choices. Sure, Vaughn has pretty much made a habit out of playing the exact same guy since “Wedding Crashers”: a fast-talking, self-absorbed, overgrown adolescent whose funniest quips are delivered under the breath and between punch-lines. Since you’re never sure what will come out of his mouth next, he’s consistently entertaining to watch, but the vehicles he chooses have become increasingly uninspired.

Blu-Ray Rating: 1.5/5.0

Four Christmases” is a particularly obnoxious holiday offering, primarily because its filmmakers are convinced that they’ve created something that people can relate to. The film centers on a couple who routinely make up excuses to avoid spending the holidays with family. But when they enter the airport on their way to Fiji (foreshadowing Vaughn »

This Week in Blu-ray: Wolfman’s Got Nards

23 November 2009 10:37 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Another week, another round of dollars to be spent here on This Week in Blu-ray. And just like last week, there are a few movies worth buying. Well alright, maybe only a few -- which is a welcome sign for anyone who lives by this particular column, as I recommended an unprecedented seven titles as 'buys,' including two television sets (one complete series) and the Gone with the Wind gift set. This week, I've got a much lighter selection of big purchases and a few movies that I think you should probably rent. We begin though, with another must-have title. Check out my picks below, and remember to support your local movie blog (us) by clicking the links and buying from Amazon. The Monster Squad: 20th Anniversary Edition Yeah, it isn't the best movie in the world. I am well aware of the campiness and the cheesiness of Monster Squad, the »

Photos – Behind the Scenes of Bones 5.09 "The Gamer in the Grease"

22 November 2009 2:47 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

EW passed out some cameras to the Bones cast and crew and got 16 behind-the-scenes of the December 3rd episode of Bones (5.09 "The Gamer in the Grease").  You can view a promo and photos for the episode and also check out the EW photos below (make sure to read the captions!)

We gave David Boreanaz, Emily Deschanel, and Co. some cameras and told them to go crazy.

The result? A funny, twisted look at filming the Dec. 3 episode, which was inspired by the doc "The King of Kong," and the Dec. 10 hour, which involves a bomb-wielding Santa. ''David loves to flash his badge,'' says Deschanel, who caught him in the act as ''Uncle Hershey'' drove them to set. Uncle Hershey has been with Boreanaz for roughly a decade. ''He's my main guy,'' Boreanaz says. ''He's Uncle Hershey!''

'Bones' cast takes us behind the scenes (and the belt buckle)

12 November 2009 11:18 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Yes, it's November Sweeps, but we're already looking ahead to December episodes of Fox's Bones. The cast took photos for EW as they filmed the Dec. 3 hour, inspired by the gamer documentary The King of Kong, and Dec. 10's Christmas story, which David Boreanaz accurately describes as "a little sick." (A man dressed as Santa is blown up after a botched bank robbery. Note: This is also the episode that Emily Deschanel's sister Zooey guest stars as a distant relative of Brennan's invited to spend the holidays with Bones and her father. Welcome back, Ryan O'Neal.) DVD Review: ‘Anvil! The Story of Anvil’ Still Best Documentary of 2009 to Date

14 October 2009 7:37 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The great “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” played to sold-out crowds earlier this year and completely rejuvenated the careers of the rock Gods that never were - Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner aka Anvil. Now this great movie is available on DVD and you shouldn’t let it go by unseen.

DVD Rating: 4.5/5.0

Displaying the same quirky charms as breakthrough documentary hits like “Spellbound,” “American Movie,” and “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” (but sharing subject in common more with “Metallica: Some Kind of Monster”), “Anvil” is simply a joy. The momentum that carried the documentary about Anvil lifted the band themselves. This was one of the few times where the phrase “jump on the bandwagon” seemed more than a little appropriate.

Anvil co-founders Robb Reiner (L) and Steve “Lips” Ludlow contemplate their band’s future in a scene from Sacha Gervasi’s feature documentary, Anvil! »

Weekly Poll Results: Best Movie About Gamers

10 September 2009 7:09 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Last week's poll was another strange assortment of movies from various genres, and I guess I'm not too surprised to see that the documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters came out on top. If you take the poll title literally, I think it really is the best movie about gamers. Still, it's nice to see the rest of the votes spread around fairly evenly. The Wizard, Tron and eXistenZ all received plenty o' love from Film Junk readers, and we had our first ever three-way tie for 5th place between Wargames, The Last Starfighter and Grandma's Boy! Do you agree with these results? 1. The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters -- 26.8% 2. The Wizard -- 15.3% 3. Tron -- 14.4% 4. eXistenZ -- 10.4% 5. Wargames -- 9.8% 5. The Last Starfighter -- 9.8% 5. Grandma's Boy -- 9.8% 8. Brainscan -- 1.7% 9. Cloak and Dagger -- 1.2% 10. Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over -- 0.9% For More Daily Movie Goodness, Visit Filmjunk. »

Ferrell-Produced ‘King Dork’ Gets King of Kong Director

16 July 2009 9:47 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

King Dork was optioned back in 2006 by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's company Gary Sanchez Productions, and yet years later it's still not made it to the screen. That could be about to change with The Hollywood Reporter saying the project has upped sticks to Sony. Plus,  a director, in the shape of Seth Gordon, is on board. The project is based on the 2006 book of the same name by Frank Portman, and it follows the trials and tribulations of high schooler Tom Henderson, who investigates his fathers death while also forming a band. It seems like there's a lot to delve into, especially since it's a dark comedy. I like the idea of a high school comedy that doesn't follow the standard set up of trying to shag whatever twenty three year-old is pretending to be sixteen while your friend mistakenly drinks semen/urine/breast milk. I hadn't really heard of the book before but »

Watch Steve Wiebe Become The King of Kong Live

2 June 2009 10:36 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We wrote a while back that former King Kong champion Steve Wiebe was going to try to reclaim his title at the E3 video game convention in June. As you know, Wiebe was the first person on record to break a million points in Donkey Kong, a high score that he ultimately lost to his nemesis Billy Mitchell as documented in the great film The King Of Kong: A Fist Full Of Quarters. It is now June, and Wiebe will be playing live, not only at the expo, but live on the web via a JustinTV stream. Want to watch the King of Kong star try to reclaim his title? Watch the stream after the jump! More information: Wiebe lived a quiet life in Washington until he lost his job at Boeing and found solace in his video game obsession, “Donkey Kong.” At the time, Billy Mitchell, a hot »
