I knew nothing of this movie when I saw it in the Westerns section of the DVD shop, which I regularly peruse in search of any releases which the store never gets... I noticed the front proclaimed it was some sort of spaghetti western meets Saw. This immediately intrigued me, as I am a collector of spaghetti westerns. I currently have about 150 of them, appreciating the very best of the genre, and subjecting myself to the worst out of a somewhat idiotic dedication to completing the collection. I've also been a fan of the horror genre pretty much as long as I've been watching movies.
I ended up putting the movie down, as it sported a $20 price tag and something about it just wasn't sitting right. Perhaps it was the horrible/suspiciously un-artistic cover art. I came home and read the reviews on here, giving much praise as an incredible entry into the world of film. I began wishing I'd picked it up and started shopping around the internet for the best price, surely this must be a movie right up my alley. It just sounds like something I'll love.
I ended up renting instead, trusting my earlier suspicions, which seemed to be confirmed upon the first 20 minutes of the movie. Not one moment of this "film" entertained me. Not only was it incredibly tiresome to view, all aspects which are obviously meant to appear as artistic expression, come across as nothing but stolen ideas which are executed poorly and with little to no understanding of how these methods work.
I am sorely disappointed. Quite literally. I fail to see how anyone could make such a horrible movie as this, if they were to actually put some loving research into the genres involved. Left For Dead came across as nothing but an attempt to exploit genres which are currently in fashion. To add yet more insult, not even the sort of exploitation that could of made it a success.
If you're a fan of either genre this movie claims to take inspiration from, I urge you to stay away. If you're like me, you won't be able to... but I'm sure you'll share my sentiment.
