Celebrate Veteran’s Day with a War Movie Overload

11 November 2009 2:33 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Instead of doing a cheesy list for Veteran's Day, we here at Fsr decided just to give a run down of all the war-type movies that we've covered over the years (the good, the bad, and the boots on the ground). Some of these you'll be able to pick up at the rental store on your way back home from work, but hopefully your employer was nice enough to give you the day off so you could sit back with a beer, some BBQ and a swelling fervor in remembrance of the monumental jobs done by the bravest members of our society. And since we're overloading here, we went ahead and included just about any flicks that involve soldiers and wartime. We even included some featuring those limey Brits! Look how far we've come since 1776. As an added challenge, why not watch all of them? The General (1927) Battleship Potemkin (1925) The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944) To Hell and Back (1955) Operation Petticoat »

Miss Saigon movie moving ahead

21 October 2009 1:01 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Tom Cruise's former business partner Paula Wagner is developing a feature film musical based on Miss Saigon, the West End/Broadway play that dominated the stage scene throughout the 1990s. Lee Daniels (Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire) is attached to helm the film.

Throughout the 1980s and into the 90s Wagner was Cruise's power agent at CAA, eventually leaving the company to form Cruise/Wagner productions when Tom wanted to get his own action franchise going with Mission: Impossible. Wagner stuck with Cruise when he went to run the new United Artists back in 2006, producing Valkyrie and Lions For Lambs before deciding to strike out as her own boss again. She's now set up her own production company, Chestnut Ridge Productions.

No screenwriter has been hired on the Miss Saigon movie yet but Wagner wants to have the project filming next year for a 2011 release. Also »

MGM to Declare Bankruptcy?

24 September 2009 9:09 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

MGM is reportedly on the verge of bankruptcy, which could jeopardize The Hobbit and future 'James Bond' films. According to Deadline Hollywood, the studio is operating with a debt load and interest payment schedule that are currently unsustainable; the question is, what can it do to keep going?

Yesterday, MGM held a lengthy conference call with bondholders to decide the company’s imminent future. On the one hand, if it files for bankruptcy, assets could be sold to cover the debt, which presently stands at $4 billion. The prime assets include the 'Bond' movie franchise as well as rights to Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming 'Hobbit' films, which MGM is co-financing and distributing internationally.

But as the studio is said to have pointed out, this would be the worst possible action, as depriving MGM of these lucrative franchises would basically kill it. The alternative, which MGM proposed, is »

Facebook Movie The Social Network is Cast

23 September 2009 8:54 AM, PDT | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake, and Andrew Garfield have been cast in the lead roles in The Social Network, the dramatic retelling of the rise of Facebook. David Fincher's onboard to direct from a script by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, Charlie Wilson's War) and with the main cast in place, the film is heading into production next month.

Variety reports Eisenberg (Zombieland, Adventureland) will be playing Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, pop star/sometimes actor Timberlake has been cast as Napster co-founder/Facebook president Sean Parker, and Garfield's taking on the role of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Most moviegoers recognize Eisenberg's face and know who Timberlake is, but Garfield's not so well known. Garfield's short list of credits include Lions for Lambs and the upcoming Terry Gilliam movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Eisenberg, Timberlake and Garfield are Friends with Fincher's 'Facebook'

23 September 2009 12:13 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I was just telling someone the other night how I think Justin Timberlake is a solid actor, but of course that is based on very little. I thought he was the best part of Alpha Dog and he did well in Black Snake Moan, outside of Craig Brewer's decision to leave in that entire final scene, but I can hardly blame that on him. So, it comes with very little surprise that Timberlake along with Adventureland's Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield (Boy A, Lions for Lambs) have joined the cast of David Fincher's Facebook feature The Social Network. Mike Fleming at Variety confirms earlier reports saying Eisenberg will play founder Mark Zuckerberg, Timberlake will play Sean Parker, the Napster co-founder who became Facebook's founding president, and Garfield will play Eduardo Saverin, the Facebook co-founder who fell out with Zuckerberg as the social network became a financial juggernaut. »

Confirmed: Eisenberg, Timberlake and Garfield Cast in David Fincher’s The Social Network

22 September 2009 10:18 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Variety has confirmed a casting rumor report from last month for David Fincher big screen adaptation of The Social Network. Jesse Eisenberg has signed to play Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (how perfect is that casting?), Andrew Garfield is set to play Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, and Justin Timberlake will play internet entrepreneur Sean Parker (Napster). Production will begin next month in Boston and later move to Los Angeles. As I have said previously, this is shaping up to be a very solid cast. If you kn ow anything about these characters, I think you'd agree. I don't normally like Timberlake, but anyone who knows the story for the film or has read the book will know he's the perfect person to play Parker. Garfield broke onto the scene with a Award-winning performance in Boy A, and has since appeared in Lions for Lambs, The Other Boleyn Girl, Red Riding, and »

James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn to star in Robert Redford’s The Conspirator

15 September 2009 3:54 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Robert Redford is ready to give directing another shot (no pun intended) with a film that revolves around the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Variety reports that James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn have signed on to star in the film.

The Conspirator tells the story of alleged conspirator Mary Surratt (Penn), the lone woman in the group charged with conspiring to kill Lincoln. Surratt’s attorney, Frederick Aiken (McAvoy), reluctantly defends her and eventually grows to believe she’s innocent.

The film will be the first financed by the American Film Co. headed by Joe Ricketts. The company was formed with the goal of creating historically accurate American stories. To help achieve this goal, Lincoln assassination experts Thomas Turner and Us Army regimental historian Col. Fred Borch will be advisers on the project.

McAvoy and Wright Penn to Kill President Lincoln

14 September 2009 12:36 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

After almost 150 years, it's about time they finally solved this damned case. You'd think that with as high a profile as President Lincoln had they would have captures his killers by now, but it appears as if they've finally uncovered that it was James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn all along. As punishment, the two actors (whoever heard of an actor killing anybody?) will be starring in The Conspirator, a movie being directed by Robert Redford about the events following the assassination in Ford's Theater. According to Variety, Wright Penn will be playing Mary Surratt, the famous figure who aided in the assassination plot by handing off pistols and field glasses for the conspirators to pick up after the shooting as they made their way into hiding. She was, as you remember from your history class, the first woman ever executed by the federal government. McAvoy will be playing Bilbo Baggins Frederick Aiken, the »

James McAvoy And Robin Wright Penn Join Robert Redford's 'The Conspirator'

Steven Spielberg has long planned an Abraham Lincoln-centric biopic, but it looks like actor-director Robert Redford is going to beat the "Indiana Jones" filmmaker to the punch. However, where Spielberg's vision purported to tell of Lincoln's life, Redford is instead focusing squarely on the slavery abolishing president's death.

Variety reports that Robert Redford will direct actors James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn in "The Conspirator," the American Film Company-produced period piece that focuses on the aftermath of President Lincoln's assassination.

In the movie, McAvoy will play Frederick Aiken, an idealistic young war hero who comes to the defense of Mary Surratt (Wright Penn), the lone female member of a group accused of conspiring to kill the president. Skeptical of Surratt at first, Aiken eventually becomes convinced of the woman's innocence.

McAvoy And Penn Cast In Redford’s ‘The Conspirator’

14 September 2009 9:59 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Last month we reported on the fact that Lions for Lambs director, Robert Redfrod, is going to be making a movie called The Conspirator about Mary Surratt, the alleged co-conspirator of John Wilkes Booth, the man responsible for President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. And today we learn that two of the primary cast members have been found: James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn.

McAvoy was already said to be at the top of the list of actors for one of the lead roles, and Variety is today confirming his casting. Penn will play (what is presumably) the lead role of Mary Surratt, the woman who in real life was tried and hanged (the first woman ever to be executed by the United States federal government, Fyi) for her alleged role in the conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln. McAvoy will play Frederick Aiken, a young war hero who reluctantly defends Surratt »

McAvoy Joins Redford's Conspiracy

James McAvoy has signed on for The Conspirator; Robert Redford's true-life historical drama about the events following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Robin Wright Penn will be co-starring.The script is by James Solomon, who also wrote Redford's Lions For Lambs. McAvoy will play Frederick Aiken, the lawyer defending Penn's Mary Surratt in the wake of the assassination. Surratt was the only woman charged among the conspirators, and was the first woman to be executed by the United States Federal Government, in 1865. Her trial was somewhat irregular as she was a civilian convicted by miltary tribunal. There's a school of thought that her major "crime" was to be the mother of the conspirator John Surratt, and that her arrest was designed to flush him out of hiding.Variety reports that this is the first film to come under the banner of entrepreneur Joe Ricketts' American Film Co: formed »
