tMF puts the spotlight on Kevin Zegers: From teen idol to serious actor!

23 October 2009 3:55 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

I was amazed by the transformation of Kevin Zegers from teen idol to serious actor. Two feature films should be credited for this amazing transition - Fifty Dead Men Walking and The Perfect Age of Rock and Roll. While Fifty Dead Men gave us a glimpse into Kevin's serious side as an actor, Perfect Age gave us his most important acting vehicle to date.

- - -

- - - In The Perfect Age of Rock and Roll, the story centers on a rock star (Zegers) who retreats to his Long Island hometown after his sophomore album flops. Cinematical was quite skeptical about the casting:

Just what would you expect from a white, cutie student from The Jane Austen Book Club (or the dysfunctional son from Transamerica) and Spike Lee? Believe it or not, Lee is executive producing a new indie film called The Perfect Age of Rock 'n' Roll, »

I See Gay People: “Whip It,” “Hannah Montana,” and Metaphors for Homosexuality

12 October 2009 10:17 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

My affection for fictional characters knows no sexual orientation — but I do have a queer sixth sense when I watch TV and movies: I see gay people.

It was no surprise, then, that Drew Barrymore's grrrl-powered roller derby flick, Whip It, played itself out on two levels in my mind when I saw it last weekend. The first was Bliss Cavendar's (Ellen Page) coming-of-age story. The second was Bliss Cavendar's subversively sexual coming out story.

What is surprising is that Jeremy Clyman, a columnist at Psychology Today, agrees with me. He wrote an article about Whip It on Psychology Today's Side Reel blog entitled "Lesbian Fantasy, Disguised."

In it he says:

[Whip It] purports to be the story of a small town adolescent who rebels and finds her genuine identity as roller derby star athlete. But I think this film is also a secret communication to closeted lesbians living in hostile »

Gossip Girl's Little J gets a new bad-boy beau

30 September 2009 11:02 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

We really haven't seen that much of Jenny Humphrey, aka Little J, on this season of Gossip Girl, but hopefully that will change. Actor Kevin Segers is set to join the Upper East Siders, and I'm sure he'll stir up plenty of trouble.

His rep says he'll be joining the show for a multi-episode arc as bad-boy Damien (why are bad boys always named Damien?), who will get tangled up with Jenny (Taylor Momsen).

Zegers has been working steadily in the movie and TV business since the early 1990s, in shows like House, M.D. and Smallville, and in movies like The Jane Austen Book Club and Transamerica, in which he played transexual Felicity Huffman's son Toby. And if you look closely, you'll recognize him as Josh Framm from the Air Bud movies.

In short, not only is Zegers cute as all get out, but he's talented, as well. »

Channel Surfing: CBS Mulling "Criminal Minds" Spin-off, John Simm Talks "Doctor Who" Send-Off for Tennant, Kevin Zegers Hears "Gossip" Call, and More

30 September 2009 7:32 AM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

Welcome to your Wednesday morning television briefing. CBS is said to be developing a potential spin-off from its crime drama series Criminal Minds that will be created by showrunner/executive producer Ed Bernero and executive producer Chris Mundy, the latter of which will write the script for the potential spin-off which will air as an episode of Criminal Minds later this season. No concrete details are available but the series is thought to revolve around a new team of FBI agents, rather than focusing on any of the existing Criminal Minds characters. (Hollywood Reporter) John Simm (Life on Mars), who returns to Doctor Who to reprise his role as The Master this winter, has said that David Tennant's swan song on the British sci-fi series is a "brilliant send-off" for Tennant and the Tenth Doctor. "It'll be a brilliant send-off for Mr Tennant," said Simm. "Last time I did »

‘Gossip Girl’ Casts Kevin Zegers To Be Jenny Humphrey’s New Love

29 September 2009 7:45 PM, PDT | OnTheFlix | See recent OnTheFlix news »

According to the Hollywood Reporter, "Gossip Girl" has hired Kevin Zegers who will be a new love interest for Taylor Momsen's character, little Jenny Humphrey. Kevin will play a character named Damien, and will be Jenny's international love interest for multiple episodes. He will also be a bad boy. What's interesting is that Kevin Zegers is 25 years old in real life, while Taylor is only 16. So I'm wondering how awkward that will be. Hmmm. Nevertheless, Taylor Momsen's Jenny Humphrey character will get more onscreen time, coming up here, pretty soon. Kevin Zegers past acting credits include roles in "TransAmerica," "The Jane Austen Book Club," "50 Dead Men Walking," and "The Narrows." »

Maggie Grace Joining Cameron Diaz In 'Wichita'

30 August 2009 6:30 PM, PDT | www.actressarchives.com | See recent Actress Archives news »

As it turns out, having her character, Shannon Rutherford, killed off during the second season of "Lost" was probably the best thing that ever happened to Maggie Grace. Going on to star alongside Maria Bello and Emily Blunt in "The Jane Austen Book Club" before landing the female lead in this year's runaway hit "Taken," if the 25 year-old actress's career was any brighter, she would indeed require shades. Currently shooting Sony's dramatic thriller "The Experiment" with Oscar winners Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker, it was announced this week Grace will next be joining Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise for Fox Picture's "Wichit »

Love Connection: Adam

28 July 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

Adam (the movie) is a different kind of love story, and that's because Adam (the character, played by a delightful Hugh Dancy: Confessions of a Shopaholic, The Jane Austen Book Club) is a different kind of leading man. We're not giving anything away by telling you that Adam is special - that is, rather than being 'neurotypical,' he's one of the growing number of Americans with the fairly new diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome, a form of high-functioning autism that was only labeled as such in the past few decades. People with Asperger's have trouble communicating with other people - even those they know very well - because they can't always read nonverbal signals and they don't automatically understand non-literal speech effects such as sarcasm and jokes. On the other hand, they are honest, often brilliant, and typically very, very interested in a wide range of topics. When Adam »

Q&A: Megan Fox's Transformers Stunt Double, Stacey Carino

24 June 2009 9:00 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

When you’re drooling over Megan Fox in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which came out yesterday, a portion of that drool should be reserved for Stacey Carino, who, as Fox’s stunt double, did a lot of the legwork. In her six-year career, the former fifth-grade science teacher has fallen down more staircases than you’ve climbed, and worked on movies as varied as Bruce Almighty, The Jane Austen Book Club, and Tim Burton’s upcoming Alice in Wonderland. Driving to her local multiplex to see herself get blown off rooftops in Transformers, Carino chatted with Vf Daily about standing in for a sex symbol, breaking her neck without realizing it, and the perils of nude stunt work. (She won’t do it.) You’ve braved all sorts of danger for Megan Fox, both in the Transformers movies and the currently filming comic-book movie Jonah Hex. What does it »

Maggie Grace Dishes on Being Taken

The actress who plays Kim in the year's sleeper hit talks about her role, working with Liam Neeson and future projects

Maggie Grace is a name and a face that you might recognize if you followed a certain J.J. Abrams series from the beginning. After getting her start in TV films like Murder in Greenwich, where she portrayed Martha Moxley, it didn't take long for Grace to find her way onto a hit series, which is exactly what she did when she landed the role of Shannon Rutherford on Lost. She's also appeared in such films as The Fog and The Jane Austen Book Club. She returned to the silver screen earlier this year with the biggest surprise hit of the year, Taken, which is coming to DVD and Blu-ray on May 12. I had the chance to speak with Grace, who plays Liam Neeson's kidnapped daughter, Kim, and here's what she had to say. »
