I just watched the film on Sunday the second day showing and I thought the movie was an animation explosion. The film centers around Ikari Shinji played by (Megumi Ogata)who now has to work with a new pilot named Shikinami Asuka (Miyamura Yuko. Ayanami Rei (Hayashibara Megumi) now has to deal with feelings she has for Shinji, all while fighting Angels.
The scenes were all superbly done with beautiful new locations like the water treatment facility. The music by Sagisu Shiro was beautiful as well with a soundtrack I would love to buy. Anyone who has seen the series will love to see these sequences. Everyone who disliked how the first film was mostly a rehash of the television series will be pleasantly surprised with how much new sequences, new lines, and new plot twists there are.
Shinji in the second movie now begins to form his own character. He is stronger and more assertive but still has his doubts and moments of thought, but these are all few and far between to annoy some people who dislike that whole thing.
The introduction Makinami Mari played by (Sakamoto Maaya) is also a welcome sight. Very welcome in fact as she is the first one fighting in the movie.
The only problem I had was the speed at which the film was played. Somethings were rushed a bit, but not too much to destroy anything from the character development which are a little light but not too light.
