Portman plays Jack's ex-girlfriend, whose answerphone messages Jack checks. All that great luggage is thought to have been symbolic of "baggage" in the film, such that the brothers lug all this baggage around in India during the entire time on this spiritual journey. Then at the end, in order to catch the train, they release their baggage and move on without it.
