Another in a Recent String of Zombie Comedies, 26 December 2007
6/10
Author: Gavin Schmitt (gavin6942@yahoo.com) from Kaukauna, Wisconsin

Two men, forced to be partners due to an unusual set of circumstances (involving a sheriff and a prostitute), get captured by the niece of Geronimo, but end up on her side when the sheriff and his men acquire Geronimo's curse (making them a zombie-like creature). The men are now on the run, hoping to find either an escape or a cure.

One cannot comment on this film without comparing it to other zombie comedies. The closest is probably "The Quick and the Undead", which I haven't seen. The modern classic is "Shaun of the Dead", which may never be surpassed -- it certainly wasn't by this film. Another entry is "Dead and Deader", which doesn't seem to be popular amongst fans but I have to say is on par with this one -- DAD is heavier on the references (which I like) and UOA is heavier on the slapstick comedy. So, that might help you make your choice if you are going to watch one or the other.

The other deciding factor has to be Chris Kattan. He's less flamboyant here than usual ("Night at the Roxbury") but is still Kattan. If you have some sort of aversion to him, you may want to avoid this film. The other actors are all quite good, although I found it very difficult to believe that Geronimo's niece had any Native American blood in her. But I won't fault her for that.

The gore is decent. Early on the effects are cheesy, but they seem to get better as they go, or I just notice the poor quality less. Not sure which, but you'll get a good share of blood. The nudity, unfortunately, is limited almost entirely to the male bottom. I may be a regular subscriber to "Buns and Ammo" but sometimes I like to see women, too, which this film can't offer.

This film was an impulse rent (it was this or "Day Watch") and I don't regret it. Sure, the plot and acting and everything else is cheesy. But, this film served it's purpose: a light-hearted gore-splattered zombie comedy to watch with friends while drinking the cheapest beer known to man (Mountain Creek). Good times. I highly recommend you repeat the experience.

Nice zombies' parody, 26 February 2008
6/10
Author: mario_c from Porto, Portugal

It's an entertaining and enjoyable satire to western and zombies' movies, both. The plot is quite simple and it's about a small town, in the Old West, which was infected by a zombie plague (originated by a curse of JERONIMO - the Indian legend who died by U.S. army's hands – to the white people). As it spreads, two outlaw "amigos" try to run away from the evil sheriff and his men, which have become zombies too.

The movie is funny and have plenty of traditional jokes related to zombies' parodies, but also a novelty: a new scenario to a zombies' film! At least I don't remember to watch any other zombies' flick in the Old West!

I saw this film at SXSW and it was hilarious. It wasn't meant to win an Oscar. Purely entertaining. Are you critics actually valid or just boring conservatives who can't find the light side of a film? What, did they take your perception of what a real zombie is and stomp all of over it? Everyone in the room with me was cracking up and I can guarantee you, they appreciate films more than you do. It's a Zombedy for Christ's sake. There hasn't been too many of those and definitely no western's. A well written script for a movie that should not be taken seriously. This doesn't make it to the big screen but Spiderman 3 does. The trailer was the best part of that movie.

Mango Goes West., 6 April 2008

I've seen bad films, and I mean BAD films. I fully expected this movie to suck like an event horizon, but... It really wasn't as bad as all that.

It's a zombie flick, set out west with supernatural zombies. Geronimo puts a curse on the white man, and when they're bitten by the undead, they too become zombified.

The acting is good in this, nobody's phoning it in, and the only thing that was kind of iffy on this thing was the story itself. Had they played this as either serious, or as a straight comedy, it would have been good. I think they were trying for a balance of both, but that's the only thing that kind of suffers. Chris Kattan is a funny guy, and has some good lines in this, as well as James Denton, and the female lead. There are some plot holes that are small, but when you pare it all away, it's still better than Diary Of The Dead, and well worth a rental.

Gotta love Western Zombies!, 29 May 2008

"Undead or Alive" is one of my all time new favorite movies. It is full of old school slapstick humor that any Three Stooges fan would appreciate. Not only is the story interesting and upbeat, but it is fun. The cast is great and there are familiar faces from other B movies classics. If you love B movies then this one will become an instant classic! Chris Kattan is still in my mind one of the funniest member of Saturday night live and will always be equal to Will Ferrell in my eyes. It is sad that the Duo does not perform together anymore. But as they say you can't mend broken hearts. There is plenty of old fashioned effects and plenty of blood and guts to go around. Along with Kattan Matt Besser would be next on my list as funny comedians. Hid role in this movie is a twisted town sheriff who steals from travelers passing through his town, only 1000 dollars away from "Retiring" to Mexico to become a sugar cane farmer, he is bitten by his deputy and becomes one of the funniest undead characters I have ever seen. This movie deserves at least a rental for trial purposes. I myself am a proud owner of this movie!

A fabulous zombie comedy. Loved it., 12 February 2009

What a surprisingly great gem of a movie this is.

I expected nothing and what I got was a fabulous little comedy/zombie/film that had me and my husband chuckling no end and me - a giggling girl in our relationship - found, myself, jumping out of my skin.

A perfect combination of wit, horror and giggles.

Recommended to anyone who loved "My Name Is Bruce".

Terrific entertainment.

And it is gory as hell, which makes for the most romantic viewing!

SEE IT. JUMP AND LAUGH.

It is a terrific piece of film-making!

Brian

Really fun camp classic, 19 January 2009

"Undead or Alive" is a really enjoyable and entertaining zombie-comedy.

**SPOILERS**

Arriving in town, Elmer, (James Denton) immediately gets into trouble with Luke, (Chris Kattan) which gets them into trouble with Sheriff Claypool, (Matt Besser) who locks them in jail. Breaking out, they form an unlikely alliance together and ride off, away from town. Getting word that they're being followed, they run into Indian Sue, (Navi Rawat) who has the same goal as they do and form another reluctant alliance. As they get closer and closer to their query, they realize that the posse following them are zombies infected with a virus passed down from the Indian generations before them as a final curse for revenge after stealing their land, and when it dawns on them that the creatures have taken over the town-members, they try to get away from the creatures before becoming harmed as well.

The Good News: This was a pretty enjoyable and entertaining zombie film. One of the best is the film's unrepentant comedy, which is much more than expected and actually gets pretty hilarious at times. This one tends to run the gamut from physical sight gags to one-liners to situational moments and much, much more, and just about all of what's intended to be funny comes off as funny. There's a few that fall flat or only manage to get a chuckle, but that's to be expected and there's a huge amount that actually land so it scores on that count. Even aside from the great zombie humor, the fact that this one keeps so many relatively great gags, from the absent-minded horses to the Native American constantly showing them up with everything she does and much, much more, this one gets a lot of great comedy that will appeal to some out there. There's also a lot of good stuff when it comes to action in here, as there's a couple of big zombie attacks that manage to score nicely due to the extra excitement. There's a nice brawl in a saloon that occurs early in the film, a pretty fun shootout in a valley that includes a lot of great moments and a rather great conclusion that has big parts on what's to come, giving it special significance. The big action scene at the end, where the zombies attack a fort where they're held up inside in a major sequence. First is the big scene where they arrive during the zombie massacre that turns the others there into zombies, followed by the lengthy removal scene that gets them out and finally the massive onslaught, and it's best scene, where they break in and attack them, forcing them into several different tactics for defense. They're all fun, enjoyable and lead to a lot of rather great gore moments, which is another plus. This one has a lot more gore than what would be expected, including several who are pulled to pieces and devoured, limbs are ripped off, heads bitten into and brain-matter devoured, a rash of gunshots and bites across anything and everything, a wicked decapitation with a shovel and much, much more, leaving this one as a nice, healthy gore-fest. The last plus is the way it treats the zombie plague.

The Bad News: There wasn't a whole lot really wrong with this one. The main factor to this one is the fact that there's some tweaking done to the zombies. The fact that they manage to talk is one of the biggest issues, and does manage to be one of the most recognizable changes regarding the zombies. This, though, isn't that bad and can be easily ignored with a couple of other behavioral issues. One of the bigger problems with them, though, regards the fact that the zombies can't be killed with a bullet to the head . Despite one of the movie's funniest scenes occurring because of the change, this is something that not all zombie fans will take kindly too. It's quite hard to be able to do that in here because of the drastic change, and it really doesn't offer up much about why the change, only that there's one. The only other part that seems to be a potential flaw is during the middle segment, where it's not all that exciting. It relies more on the comedy and jokes, but it falls a little flat when it comes to action and it's negligible anyway. Anyway, there's not a whole lot wrong with it.

The Final Verdict: One of the more enjoyable entries in the zombie-comedy sub-genre, though there's a few flaws, but not enough to really hurt it. Highly recommended to zombie fans, those who enjoy these types of entries or fans of the cast members, while those who don't are advised to seek caution.

Pleasantly surprised by this movie. Is this the first western zombie movie? It was fun, light hearted, and a jolly good romp. I watched this while my wife was away as she's not a huge fan of gore etc. But she'll enjoy this one. Much like that Welsh movie "Evil Aliens" it provides a different side to the usual gore/horror. I was reminded of P Jacksons early work. The running joke about Frisky the horse was nice, and some of the scenery shots were very good.

The ending was very nicely done, there's nothing like a "not happy" ending in this type of movie.

In summary, it was camp, funny, not very sweary or gory, and entertaining. Sure, the dog runs off to the handler in the very last scene but who cares?

I liked it...It was typically good., 5 May 2008

I liked this movie. I say it was typically good because it satisfied any expectations I had. I don't get the bad reviews posted. It says in the beginning it's a "Zombedy" and it stars Chris Kattan...and Brian Posehn is in it too. I really don't need to say anything else after that. That's like a "get out of jail free" card. Instead it's a "if you take yourself too seriously and try to seriously critique this type of film, you're a fool" card. I've never seen a "Zombie" movie that didn't have some camp or dark humor. This is obviously more the traditional camp, but if you can't find the little things funny then you'll probably need to go out a get a new sense of humor. You're taking yourself too seriously, especially when it comes to reviewing a "Zombie Western". See it kids! It's definitely worth watching.

Silly & mindless, but watchable, 15 June 2009
4/10
Author: Anthony Pittore III (Shattered_Wake) from Los Angeles, CA

Synopsis: Army deserter Elmer Winslow (James Denton) and loser cowboy Luke Budd (Chris Kattan) flee town after robbing the evil Sheriff Claypool (Matt Besser). With the Sheriff's posse hot on their trail, Elmer and Luke (oddly) join up with Sue (Navi Rawat), the hot niece of Geronimo with the promise that they'll show her the way to the nearest Army Outpost. Sue wants to take vengeance upon those (the entire Army, apparently) who wronged her people and killed her uncle. Unfortunately for our small band of misfits. . . everyone in the area has turned into ravenous zombies.

Review: Since I went in thinking this was a real zombie western, I was surprised (and annoyed) to find a cheesy comedy. Or, 'Western Zombedy' as the director called it. Breaking down the 'horror-comedy' of the film. . . there's very little horror. Sure, there's a bit of gore and zombie violence, but most of it is done out of humour and, even still, not funny. The attempted comedy does get a couple laughs, mostly from Chris Kattan and his usual idiot behaviour and Brian Posehn as the first zombie. On the positive side, the soundtrack is pretty good. Not good, just pretty good. There were a couple tunes in there I'll actually seek out. . . but, the music doesn't make up for a badly acted, written, and directed film with a strange habit of forgetting exactly what time period they're in (which is one of the worst things a film can do for me). Overall, if you're willing to waste an hour and a half on some mindless crap and you have nothing at all else to watch, give it a look. . . but it's not worth much.

Final Rating: 4/10
