Checkmate: An Advance Review of PBS' "Endgame" on "Masterpiece Contemporary"

23 October 2009 8:37 AM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

Apartheid is an ugly word, conjuring up images of racial segregation and hatred from a time in the not-too-distant past of South Africa. PBS' new political thriller Endgame, which airs Sunday evening as part of the public broadcaster's Masterpiece Contemporary wheel, dramatizes not the plight of the common South African man and woman under the draconian decree of apartheid but rather the machinery operating behind the scenes to bring an end to apartheid once and for all. Written by Paula Milne (Second Sight) and directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point), Endgame revolves around a series of secret talks between the Anc and the South African government brokered by Consolidated Goldfields, a multi-national company with vested financial interests in South Africa. The talks took place at an estate in England, far away from the violent rebellion in South Africa, and despite the risk in bringing together these enemies, the open lines »

Scott And Jolie Wear Gucci

20 October 2009 11:57 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Yet Another Ridley Scott Project episode 427 unearths a movie that's been buried for a while. We first heard about Scott's attachment to a biopic of the Borgia-like Gucci fashion dynasty way back in 2006, before Scott finished American Gangster, when its home was Paramount and the script was by World Trade Centre's Andrea Berloff. A year or so later it was being rewritten by The Interpreter's Charles Randolph.Since then, nada. But now, suddenly, the project is a priority at Fox, who are shopping around for a third writer, and want to get underway in early 2010. Scott is still attached (which would make this his immediate next film after Robin Hood, before Alien 5, Red Riding, Monopoly or whatever) and it seems likely that Angelina Jolie, in her second big film next year alongside The Tourist (not to mention the planned Scarpetta film, based on Patricia Cornwell's novels), will sign on to play Patrizia Reggiano. »

Goldberg Honoured With Career Achievement Award

20 October 2009 3:01 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg has been honoured for her Hollywood career at a New York fundraising gala.

The Ghost star was presented with the Marlon Brando Award at the 2009 Stella by Starlight Gala on Monday.

Goldberg, who was handed the prize by American Gangster star Ruby Dee, admits she was flattered to receive the accolade but would rather have her late friend Brando back by her side instead.

She says, "It (the award) was great just because of my relationship with Marlon, so it was nice.

"We spoke often and we talked a lot, and I'd much rather have him than the award. He was a good man. I didn't get to work with him but I hung out with him."

Hollywood icon Brando died in 2004 at the age of 80. The gala raised money for the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. »

Peeking Behind the Doors of Seismic Change: Televisionary Talks to "Endgame" Star Chiwetel Ejiofor

20 October 2009 11:50 AM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

Golden Globe nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor is perhaps best known for his work in such diverse films as American Gangster, Dirty Pretty Things, Serenity, Love Actually, Redbelt, and Kinky Boots. The British actor has made a career of playing deeply complex individuals, from cross-dresser Lola in Kinky Boots to Dirty Pretty Things' cab driver and former doctor Okwe. In PBS' gripping apartheid thriller Endgame, which airs Stateside this Sunday as part of the new season of Masterpiece Contemporary, Ejiofor, recently appointed an OBE by Queen Elizabeth, plays South African political figure Thabo Mbeki, a key player in secret negotiations between the African National Congress and the South African government that were brokered by Consolidated Goldfields. Remarkably these talks resulted in an end to apartheid in South Africa and Endgame, written by Paula Milne and directed by Pete Travis, dramatize the secret talks, which occurred at Mells Park, an estate in England. »

Is There Subtle Racism in Movie Posters?

20 October 2009 7:48 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

A dizzying array of elements are involved in creating a movie poster -- everything from contractual requirements dictating the size of the stars' names to psychological studies on which colors and fonts produce which emotions in viewers. But Ron Henriques at Latino Review suggests there might be more to it. In a very amusing article -- or an infuriating one, depending on how seriously you take it -- he shows multiple examples of what he considers racist "rules" in the way minorities are shown in posters.

For example, Henriques says it's only Ok for a minority (he's mostly talking about African Americans) to brandish a gun in a movie poster if they're cops, secret agents, or FBI. What's more, he says, the posters tend to make it clear that the person is in law enforcement, either through costume elements or in the text on the poster, lest observers think he's a criminal. »

'Red Riding' to Columbia

15 October 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Columbia Pictures has acquired the rights to remake Red Riding, which like this year’s State of Play is based on a British production.

According to Variety, the studio is negotiating with Ridley Scott to direct and Steve Zaillian to write the screenplay, which would condense the five-hour original into a single feature film.

If a deal gets cemented, Red Riding would be produced through Scott and Zaillian’s Scott Free and Film Rites banners, respectively, as well as by Andrew Eaton of Revolutionary Films, which produced the mini-series. Scott previously collaborated with Zaillian on American Gangster, and Zaillian got a co-writing credit on Scott’s Hannibal.

The mini-series, which was based on four novels by David Peace, centered around the investigation of the disappearance of several young girls. As was the case with Kevin Macdonald’s State of Play, the setting will be transferred to the U.S. from Great Britain. »

Ridley Scott to Direct 'Red Riding' Miniseries Remake

15 October 2009 5:02 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Ridley Scott's eyes may well be bigger than his stomach. He's been consuming a lot of projects lately, from Robin Hood to Monopoly to the Alien prequel to Brave New World, and those are just the big-name projects he's directing (plus one announced for next year called The Kind One with Casey Affleck). So how in the world can he find room for anything else?

Apparently, Ridley was convinced that a remake of the UK miniseries Red Riding is only waaafer thin, because he's directing that, too, based on a new Steve Zaillian screenplay. They previously collaborated on American Gangster and Hannibal. Both guys will also chip in as producers, as well.

Columbia stepped up and bought the rights to adapt both the miniseries and the collection of novels by David Peace on which it is based. Red Riding will be distributed by IFC in the Us this fall. »

Ridley Scott Remaking UK's Red Riding Trilogy for Columbia

15 October 2009 3:53 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Columbia Pictures announced earlier today via Variety that they've acquired remake rights to the UK TV mini-series known as Red Riding, a trilogy of feature films that have been playing the festival circuit this year. The studio is "negotiating" with Steve Zaillian (Gangs of New York, American Gangster) to write the script and Ridley Scott (Gladiator, American Gangster, Body of Lies) to direct. Zaillian has already been working with Columbia, as he was hired to rewrite the Steven Soderbergh Moneyball script. Both Scott and Zaillian will produce the remake along with Andrew Eaton of Revolutionary Films, who produced the mini. Alright, so I saw part one of the Red Riding trilogy at the Telluride Film Festival back in September. It's titled 1974 and stars the very talented Andrew Garfield, however, I hated it. I disliked it so much that I walked out of it after the first film and didn't even »

Ridley Scott Goes Red Riding

15 October 2009 12:31 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

I've been meaning to get around to see the Red Riding trilogy, a series of British films about power and police corruption that center around the disappearance of three young girls. But given that the whole thing is over five hours long, and sounds incredibly grim, you can probably understand why I've been putting it off. And now Ridley Scott is making it so I never have to see it at all! According to Variety, he and Columbia Pictures are planning a remake of the miniseries, with the setting transferred to the U.S. and the five hours somehow trimmed down to a feature running time. (Maybe they can take some hints from John Woo?) Steve Zaillian, who last wrote the doomed Soderbergh project Moneyball, also wrote American Gangster for Scott, and it sounds like this gritty crime movie might be right up the same alley. Ridley Scott and Steve Zaillian Go Red Riding

15 October 2009 10:25 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Columbia has purchased the rights to the novels and British mini-series “Red Riding” about power and police corruption framed around the investigation into the disappearance of several young girls.  The studio is negotiating with Ridley Scott to direct the film and with Steve Zaillian to write the screenplay.  If they both sign on, it will be their third collaboration after “Hannibal” and “American Gangster”.  While it’s no easy task to condense a six-hour miniseries into a two-hour movie, I was impressed with what this year’s “State of Play” was able to accomplish, although a large part of that film’s success was due to how Jason Bateman chose to pronounce the word “garage”. Ridley Scott In Talks To Remake ‘Red Riding’

15 October 2009 9:51 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Red Riding is a mini-series (three movies in total) based on four novels that center around the fictionalized investigation into a series of murders, including those committed by the Yorkshire Ripper, a serial killer that terrorized the Yorkshire area in England in the ’70s and ’80s. The mini-series aired on TV in the UK back in March (it’s set for a Fall release in the U.S.) to mostly positive reviews - praised for its realism and strong performances (from such Brit actors as Sean Bean and Paddy Considine), amongst others things.

In a rather surprising piece of news, today we learn that Ridley Scott (yes, That Ridley Scott) is in talks to direct a one-film remake of the Red Riding mini-series, with Steve Zaillian (Hannibal, American Gangster) also in talks to write the script.

Variety reports that Columbia Pictures has acquired the rights to both the Red Riding mini-series, »

Steve Zaillian and Ridley Scott to Remake British Red Riding Series

15 October 2009 9:05 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

A month ago at the Telluride Film Festival, the UK crime trilogy Red Riding played to good critical reception. The reception didn't escape the notice of studio execs, and Columbia has picked up the rights to remake the trilogy. The studio is negotiating a deal to have Steve Zaillian script the remake for Ridley Scott to direct. Add one more to Ridley's towering 'in development' pile! Variety reports that Scott and Zaillian are producing through their respective companies (Scott Free and Film Rites, respectively). Zaillian and Scott have worked together on two released films, Hannibal and American Gangster, and Scott has frequently praised Zaillian's work. Not mentioned is whether this would be one film or more. The UK series adapts four novels into three films, and the whole point is that the series is rather epic. Condensing down to one film would miss the point entirely. But does Ridley Scott »

Ridley Scott Possibly Remaking Red Riding

15 October 2009 8:03 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Ridley Scott is one busy man. Of course, that doesn’t mean Scott ends up doing every movie he’s attached to; actually, he mostly doesn’t end up doing the majority of the movies he gets himself attached to, kinda like Sam Raimi. But being that Scott is Scott, it tends to get people excited when his name is mentioned with any project, which is probably why producers like attaching him to things. The latest project to get the Scott Maybe Onboard Treatment is a U.S. remake of the British mini-series “Red Riding”. Columbia Pictures has acquired rights to the UK mini-series, and Steve Zaillian is currently in negotiations to board the project as writer, with Ridley Scott as director. The writer/director last worked together on “American Gangster”, and before that, “Hannibal”. I liked the former, but the latter could have been better. The UK mini-series clocked in at five hours, »

Ridley Scott needs more movie projects

15 October 2009 8:01 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

How many movie projects can director Ridley Scott get himself attached to? Maybe he's trying to determine the answer to that question as the British filmmaker with a knighthood is now involved in creatively shaping Red Riding for Columbia Pictures.

Based on a British mini-series, which itself was based on the first book in a series of David Peace novels, Red Riding centers on the police investigation into a number of missing young girls in the 1970s and 80s, and how the ones charged with upholding the law fall into corruption. Columbia purchased the rights to all four books in Peace's series as well as the mini too.

Scott's Scott Free Productions will develop the movie along with writer Steve Zaillian (Schindler's List, Clear and Present Danger) and Andrew Eaton, the producer of the mini. Zaillian worked with Scott before on the adaptation of Hannibal and American Gangster. Meanwhile, Ridley »

Remake of 'Red Riding' Trilogy Added To Ridley Scott's To-Do List

15 October 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The recent UK miniseries "Red Riding" condensed four lengthy crime novels into three feature-length episodes. Now Columbia Pictures wants to squish everything into a single movie, and the studio is looking to Oscar-winning screenwriter Steven Zaillian ("Schindler's List") to handle that task, according to Variety.

Columbia is also said to be negotiating with Ridley Scott to direct the adaptation, but it's hard to imagine the "Blade Runner" director having room in his pipeline to commit to anymore films. After he finishes his "Robin Hood" movie, Scott is attached to helm the board game-adaptation "Monopoly," the prequel to "Alien" an adaptation of "Brave New World" and his sci-fi pet project "The Forever War."

And he's been offered about 43,968,034,960,394 other gigs in the past year. So, even if Columbia wanted him to merely produce "Red Riding," he would seem to be too busy. This is likely just one of those cases in »

Columbia Wants Scott and Zaillian for Red Riding

15 October 2009 7:39 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

I’m somewhat convinced that Ridley Scott — either by his own nature or by the wishes of studios — will eventually attach his name in some capacity to every film on the horizon. A quick scan of IMDb reveals that the director of Blade Runner and Gladiator has twenty two films in the works, including his Alien prequel and his bizarre Monopoly film.

Now, Columbia Pictures wants Scott and writer Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List, American Gangster, Moneyball) to remake the U.K. miniseries Red Riding, based on a series of David Peace novels.

Scott will serve as a producer for the film, which will center around “power and police corruption framed around the investigation of the disappearance of several young girls.” The setting will be relocated to the United States for the abbreviated film version.

Scott and Zaillian are collaborators, having worked together on both Gangster and Hannibal. While both are extremely talented, »

Red Riding Trilogy Goes to Ridley Scott

If such extensive work is being done across on the pond on the subject, why remake it here? We're talking about the "Red Riding" trilogy, based on the novels by David Peace which chronicle the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper. Our last report on the series of UK films came here and, since then, IFC Films has picked them up for distribution. Yet Columbia Pictures is already seeking to remake the series here in the States with Steve Zaillian on board to write and Ridley Scott directing. The two collaborated on Hannibal and American Gangster . Columbia's redo will relocate the story in the States. IFC is set to release the UK "Red Riding" trilogy this fall. »
