In Did You Hear About the Morgans?, Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker are supposed to pass for a married couple, but they have all the chemistry of two actors who just met and shook hands moments before the cameras rolled. They don’t even seem to like each other much — I’m fairly certain I saw Parker’s nostrils flaring in one scene — which poses a bit of a problem for a movie that hinges on their characters working out their differences and living happily ever after…read more [Miami Herald]
This is a familiar set-up, used in hundreds of movies to best isolate the comedic potential of the standard fish-out-of-water scenario, but Lawrence doesn’t play the lead characters as bumbling nitwits forced to learn hayseed lessons. No, Paul and Meryl are the liberal, elitist surrogates for the audience. They know things about nutrition and animal cruelty, about style and

How bad is Did you Hear About the Morgans? It’s enough for Hugh Grant to never star in a comedy ever again. (Perhaps we should send its producers a box of delicious chocolates?)
Despite Grant saying he enjoyed making the movie, the 49-year-old is currently deciding if he’ll ever do another comedy anytime soon.
“I’m making that choice right now. I just don’t know,” said Grant.
“Although I liked Music And Lyrics and liked doing it in many ways, I did get panic attacks. I came back and put all these Post It notes around my computer: no more films ever! Because they were pretty bleak, the panic attacks.
“Then, two-and-a-half years later, Marc sends a very funny script through and I thought f*#@ it, I’ll do it.”
“I forgot that I had made a resolution never to make another film!” said the British actor,

'Did You Hear About the Morgans?' review (1.5/5) - There is nothing deadlier than a cliché ridden predictable comedy.

There is nothing deadlier than a cliché ridden predictable comedy. “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” is guilty on all charges. And this is with two comedy veterans like Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker sharing the top billing.
Much of the blame has to fall on Director/Screenwriter Marc Lawrence. He previously worked with Grant on the underrated charmer “Music and Lyrics”. That movie spoke to many children of the 80s and it had several likable characters. The current film offers up seemingly warmed over leftovers in the area of the screenplay.
Grant and Parker play separated married couple Paul and Meryl Morgan. He is an accomplished lawyer and she is a high flying real estate broker in New York. Paul cheated on Meryl with a colleague. They go to dinner to work things out and they witness a murder. What happens after this starts the ball quickly rolling downhill.

Movie Review: “Did You Hear About the Morgans?”

Seen on: December 14, 2009
The players: Director: Marc Lawrence, Writer: Marc Lawrence, Cast: Hugh Grant, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sam Elliott, Mary Steenburgen
Facts of interest: Lawrence also directed "Music and Lyrics."
The plot: A New York couple is forced to enter a witness protection program and relocate to Wyoming after witnessing a cold-blooded murder.
Our thoughts: Marc Lawrence’s new romantic comedy “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” is the epitome of ultra-boring, completely unnecessary cinema. It’s a movie in which nothing really works and the actors don’t seem to have a clue about what they’re doing. Alas, it turns out this one may just as well be among the most disappointing films of 2009.

The makers of Did You Hear About the Morgans? probably would not consider this much of an endorsement, but here it is: It's not That bad. There isn't too much in the plot that's aggressively stupid, it produces a few chuckles here and there, and the cast is likable. It's not worth recommending, mind you, unless you're at the theater and you've seen everything else and a screening of this starts in 10 minutes -- and even then you should consider re-watching something else -- but it doesn't sink to the level of badness that you'd expect, given the premise. It's a mere mediocrity, snatched from the jaws of awfulness.
This is the third film written and directed by Marc Lawrence, and the others, Two Weeks Notice and Music and Lyrics, also starred Hugh Grant. That seems like an odd partnership, but hey, whatever works. This time, Grant plays Paul Morgan,

Did You Hear About the Morgans?
Directed by: Marc Lawrence
Cast: Sarah Jessica Parker, Hugh Grant, Sam Elliot, Mary Steenburgen
Running Time: 1 hr 45 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: December 18, 2009
Plot: After witnessing a murder, a recently separated couple (Grant and Parker) from New York City is sent to a small town in Wyoming and put under witness protection.
Who’S It For?: To get pulled into this disaster, it’s necessary to be a fan of the more tolerable work from either Hugh Grant or Sarah Jessica Parker. Still liking these actors after the movie can not be guaranteed as you leave the theatre. The happiest audience for this film might be Wilford Brimley’s groupies, or more directly, fans of big mustaches – Sam Elliot and Brimley seem to be competing on who can have the biggest face bush.
Expectations: Grant and Parker have been funny in roles before

The ‘Did You Hear About The Morgans?’ star – who is known for playing suave English men in romantic comedy films - doesn’t work on as many movies as his peers because he’s “picky” and can only act a certain type of character.
He said: "I'm very picky but also very limited as an actor. There's not much I can do.
"I've always said that if you give me an Ibsen script, I can get away with it. But there are a lot of people who can do it better. I think that's right. And if you're going to put all this effort and heartache... if you put a year of your life into this, it's only worth it if you think you have something to offer in this area."

This week we can immerse ourselves in tales of American sentiment, French fantasy, English history, Italian romance and alien invasion.
"Avatar"
After more than a decade on hiatus, James Cameron returns from his days as "King of the World" with a mind on conquering a few new ones in this sci-fi epic that the director maintains will alter the face of moviemaking forever. (Early reviews seem to agree.) A galaxy away from Cameron's days as a miniature maker on Roger Corman's "Battle Beyond the Stars," "Avatar" blends performance capture technology with real world photography to create Pandora, where a troubled U.S. marine (Sam Worthington) is tasked with infiltrating the Na'vi, a tribe of primitive but proud aliens, via a genetically created body, though he finds his loyalties torn when he falls in love with one of their own (Zoe Saldana). The film's reported $300 million price tag is surely

Grant Took Panic Pills During Music And Lyrics

Hugh Grant was doped up on anti-anxiety pills during the filming of Music And Lyrics - to combat his crippling panic attacks.
The actor has been candid about his chronic anxiety, which began when he made 1999's Notting Hill with Julia Roberts and became most severe while he was shooting the 2007 romantic comedy with Drew Barrymore.
Grant admits he was terrified of the disorder, and turned to powerful anti-anxiety medication lorazepam to get through the project.
He says, "I did the whole film full of lorazepam... It was scary.
"They've (the panic attacks) been growing over the years. There would always be two or three during a film and on Music and Lyrics I had a lot. I don't really know why. They would come and go during the easiest scenes. I'll go in there, rehearse, think it's going to be good and then suddenly they turn the camera round for a close-up and I freeze like a rabbit. It's humiliating and it's so bad I can barely speak so they have to throw the scene away."
Grant then clung to one piece of advice from a therapist to help him survive filming on upcoming comedy Did You Hear About The Morgans? with Sarah Jessica Parker.
He explains, "The one thing that did me some good was a bloke who said that when you have a panic attack, it's your natural adrenalin which you need to do the scene, but just a fraction too much.
"So if you just breathe and take it down a little you can do it. Just knowing that helped, so I got through this movie just about all right. Just."

Dad Bans Grant From Making Movie About His Grandfather's War Heroics

Hugh Grant has been forbidden from turning his late grandfather's wartime prison escape into a new movie - by his dad.
The Music and Lyrics star is keen to make his directorial debut with a screenplay he has written about his grandad's World War II heroics - but his family has made him promise to ditch the idea.
Grant explains, "My father is very much against it. To him, any film equals Hollywood, equals a sort of sellout. It would debase what was, for him, a very sensitive episode involving a regiment of which his family is incredibly proud.
"There's a beauty to the old regimental system and that's why I want to make the film. It must be in my genes; I've got so many soldiers as forebears."
But Grant's Two Weeks Notice co-star Sandra Bullock insists the actor should direct - soon.
She tells America's Cigar Aficionado magazine, "Hugh would make an amazing director because his attention to detail and obsessive drive to make things perfectly natural are what actors strive to find in a director."

Cinematical has just received six exclusive new images from Did You Hear About the Morgans?, starring Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker as a New York Couple on the verge of divorce who witness a murder and, in an attempt to salvage their marriage (and save their lives), they join the witness protection program. But that's when things really get interesting, because the program sends our uptight, urban city dwellers all the way to the backwoods of Wyoming -- where the loud, obnoxious sounds of the city are replaced by the soft, calming sounds of nature. Will that be enough to save the marriage, though?
Sam Elliott, Mary Steenburgen and Elisabeth Moss also star in this comedy directed by Marc Lawrence (Forces of Nature, Miss Congeniality), who last worked with Grant on the charming Music and Lyrics. Will Grant's pairing with Sarah Jessica Parker work just as well as

Hugh – who is currently single - said: “Ten years ago, I wouldn’t have thought about having children at all. But now I have so many nephews and nieces and cousins and godchildren, I like the thought.
“But that’s on the basis that I can leave after ten minutes. I don’t know what it would be like 24 hours a day. I think I’d have a lot of nannies.”
