The fourth series of Monty Python, without John Cleese, is a mixed bag that managed to produce three very good episodes, one disaster (the Golden Age of Ballooning) and two episodes that don't quite come off. Mr Neutron falls into the latter category, but there are some good bizarre laughs to be had if you're willing to go with the flow and wait for them. It's a more linear episode than usual, with 'dangerous' superhero Mr Neutron (Graham Chapman in a costume that unflatteringly shows off his rather skinny legs) hiding out in dreary suburbia while the global superpowers fret over his whereabouts and the FBI send for the brilliant master of disguise 'Teddy Salad' (who turns out to be an absurdly funny dog puppet). After an interminable opening sketch about Post Office boxes which even seems to bore the studio audience, things fall into place as the usual parade of bizarre characters and situations weave in and out of the nominal plot, including Terry Jones's brutally misanthropic Mr Entrail ("they're a couple of little bastards - they've got eyes like little pigs!"), Mrs S.C.U.M (Terry Jones again), Michael Palin's personal hygiene-fixated military man (to say nothing of his genuinely creepy bloodthirsty magician), fish-fixated Eskimos, ballet-fixated mountain men and an over-attentive gypsy violinist. Far from running on empty, even at this late stage the Python boys were still full of offbeat ideas.
