Manus Domini may not be the most extravagant Harsh Realm episode in terms of scale or ambition, but it manages to give Scott, DB and Rachel individual yet interlocking stories and to seriously grip and entertain anyone coming within a mile of it. Tony To directs with a sharpness that makes full use of every tree branch, stick of corn and speck of sunlight. John Shiban's script is tight, but somehow loose enough to stun the viewer with just how much is going on, he would make a fine juggler if the music halls ever come back. Apollonia Vanova can claim to be of this world all she wants, I don't believe her and Pablo Coffey makes such a wonderful job of one of the most iconic scenes in the series that you want to watch it over and over just to hear his voice. Don Opper gives the story a taut occupied-France feel as a man scared three quarters to death and Peter Kent doesn't have to do anything, he just is. Manus Domini may not be an obvious contender for the best HR episode ever, but it's a contender nevertheless.
