History Can Be Deadly, 1 March 2007

This was a pretty good episode of Bonanza which featured Pernell Whitaker confronting the big shots and founders of Virginia City. Bonanza was an interesting show that often took the position that those in authority were not nice folks. There was more than one episode that featured corrupt politicians and bad sheriffs. Considering that this was a family show, the writing was pretty daring for the times.

In this episode, Adam decides to prepare a history class about the early days of Virginia City. He goes to the county seat and gets all their old records. Back in the days before xerox machines, people apparently were allowed to take these official documents home with them to read. One can only wonder how much document forgery and destruction of official records happened in the old days.

Anyhow, Adam starts to discover that maybe the founding fathers got most of their land by killing off an innocent tribe of Indians. The founders meanwhile don't want anyone dredging up their past sins, and so the conflicts ensue. Eventually there are some fistfights and gunfighting over the issues. Is justice done? You have to watch the episode and decide for yourself. Much like the current Iraq war, you have to wonder if the people that are getting killed are enjoying their democracy.

This episode also feature Marriette Hartley as the niece of one of the founders and also the school teacher. There is some romantic angle between her and Adam, but there are certainly no sparks or chemistry. Marriette Hartley never seemed to emote much warmth or personality, and this is one of her typical wooden performances. If you are a fan of Adam, this is a pretty good episode.
