This is an inside joke about the "The Twilight Zone" (1959) episode "The Twilight Zone: Nightmare at 20,000 Feet (#5.3)" (1963)_. William Shatner played the lead role in that episode of the 1959 TV series and John Lithgow played the lead role in that story in Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983).
