Thirteen hours ago, Jack Bauer was asked to deal with a possible assassination attempt. At the same time, his wife and daughter were kidnapped. Now, having saved both David Palmer and his family, he would be entitled to some rest, wouldn't he? Not really, according to Division director Ryan Chapelle (Paul Schulze), who puts Jack into custody and lets him know he will have to face some serious charges because of his unsanctioned behavior. And that's not the only inconvenience: Palmer, still convinced Jack was the assassin, is starting to understand what connection there is between the two of them. Well, at least Teri and Kim are being taken care of by CTU's physicians. That's always a relief...
Elsewhere, a second shooter comes in from Belgrade, while Andre Drazen, strongly disappointed by Ira Gaines' handling of the situation, has the latter's collaborator Kevin Carroll executed and prepares Plan B, having foreseen everything in case the earlier hit went awry.
Violent disposal aside, Episode 14 is actually pretty low-key, its main purpose being to introduce the Chapelle character and underline how big a pain in the ass he can be. That goal is fulfilled with ease by Schulze, best known for playing the kind Father Phil on The Sopranos, who incarnates the typical uptight boss with a slight hint of humanity (hard to notice, but it's there) that elevates Ryan from a two-dimensional caricature.
True suspense is never far away, though: the conspiracy goes on as planned, and the final thirty seconds suggest some of the meatiest bits of the entire series will take place in the next hour.
Tick, tock, tick, tock...
