Chris Weitz had a tough act to follow. The talented writer-producer-director had directed such films as American Pie (1999), About a Boy (2002), and The Golden Compass (2007), and now he's the man behind the camera on one of the year's most breathlessly anticipated movies, The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009). Just that title alone clues you into the myriad tasks and quandaries at hand for Weitz: he was stepping into an existing franchise that got off to a blockbuster start last year with Twilight (2008); he was taking over from another director (Catherine Hardwicke) with an entirely different style; he was inheriting a cast -- including Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner -- already intimately familiar with their respective roles, and he was directing a movie that was no longer just a sequel to a popular movie, but rather the next installment in a billion-dollar phenomenon. PopStar recently spoke with Weitz by telephone »

An "outwardly angelic little girl" gets adopted by a new family consisting of Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga, and then begins to unleash her hidden evilness. In his review, Peter Martin wrote that Orphan "is so bats*** crazy that it wears you down just enough to accept the lunacy and enjoy the movie for what it is: every parent's worst nightmare, writ large in childish crayon." Skip it. Also on Blu-ray.

Woody Allen's follow-up to Vicky Cristina Barcelona and return to the Big Apple takes his old man self out of the equation to give a new dude (played by Larry David) some May-December romance with Evan Rachel Wood. Nick Schager wasn't sold, and in his review, he wrote: "rather than an inspired meeting of kindred minds, their collaboration does little except reinforce the notion that Allen's creative well has long since run dry, »

Woody Allen likes to keep a little mystery steeped in his upcoming projects -- especially when it comes to the title. Where other projects start off with that nugget of news, he shares it later. So, without further ado, the title of his latest film is, as The Hollywood Reporter posts:
You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger
This is the film that stars the likes of Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, and Naomi Watts. Set in London, the film "revolves around different members of a family, their tangled love lives, and their attempts to try to solve their problems." Before you go thinking that Watts gets to romance all the men -- Gemma Jones, Freida Pinto, and Lucy Punch also star. Considering the title, I'm going to guess that Brolin, Hopkins, and Watts are the family, and Banderas comes and spices things up with Latin lasciviousness.
I've got high hopes for this one. »

It should not be surprising that a famous Hollywood star is the face of a luxury brand. They seem to have their face on everything these days, from watches to designer clothing and even European cars. But when quintessential champagne house, Möet & Chandon, for the first time in champagne marketing history elects to use a famous actress to be their ambassador, and that celebrity happens to be Scarlett Johansson, it is a beautiful amalgamation befitting the hype. Since her springboard to worldwide fame with Sofia Coppola's Lost In Translation, Johansson has been delighting audiences with a range of roles encompassing gritty dramas, period features and mainstream romantic comedies (A Love Song For Bobby Long, The Other Boleyn Girl, He's Just Not That Into You), and in recent times has been the muse of Woody Allen (Match Point, Scoop, Vicky Cristina Barcelona). »

...premiered in Hollywood. My how things have changed. Remember when we didn't know who Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) was or that Christopher Nolan would soon make one of the biggest hits of all time. Remember when people were still regularly talking about Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) and everyone was still hugely fond of Christian Bale? Good times.

John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle, the directorial tandem who adapted the Spanish horror film [Rec] into the American remake Quarantine, are getting back into the horror game. This time they're working on a project called Devil, based on a story by M. Night Shyamalan. Shyamalan, who is producing the flick, is keeping all of the plot details under lock and key as the production gets set to roll camera in Toronto on October 26th. However, with the report from Variety today that Chris Messina (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) has been tapped to star comes the revelation that he will play a sobered-up homicide detective. So glean what you will from that little bit of information. Adding to the horror players rally is screenwriter Brian Nelson, who worked with Steve Niles and Stuart Beattie on the adaptation of 30 Days of Night. He was brought in to write the screenplay. Wait, are there killer trees in this movie? Because I don’t know if I can take another killer tree movie from M. Night Shyamalan. Thankfully, no. The film in question is “Devil”, set to be directed by the brothers Dowdle — that’s Drew and John Erick Dowdle, directors of “Quarantine”, the remake of the Spanish horror movie “Rec”. “Devil” is based on a story idea by M. Night Shylaman, but is scripted by Brian Nelson, who is no stranger to horror, having written the film adaptation of “30 Days of Night”. Today the trades report that “Devil” has found its leading man in Chris Messina (pictured, left), who will be playing a character named Bowden, described as “a sobered-up homicide detective”. Messina has been in “Julie and Julia” and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, so this is a pretty major departure for him in terms of film roles. Shyamalan and Sam Mercer will produce for Universal, »

Forget “The Happening” for a second and lets remember that when director M. Night Shyamalan gets it right, he Really gets it right. So here’s hoping his writing skills are as good as his directing skills because Universal Pictures have just cast Chris Messina to star in Devil, a new horror-thriller based on a Shyamalan story.
Shyamalan will join Sam Mercer as producer on the picture, which is the first in a three picture deal struck between the hit-and-miss director and Media Rights Capital to create “Night Chronicles“, a series of genre pieces being released over a period of – you guess it, three years!
According to Variety:
Brian Nelson (”30 Days of Night”) wrote the script. The Dowdles will be exec producers.
Plot’s being kept under wraps, but sources said Messina plays the lead role of Bowden, a sobered-up homicide detective. Messina most recently starred in “Julie and Julia” and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona. »

Finally, we're getting some news about one of those M. Night Shyamalan produced scary movies that he's presenting under the Night Chronicles production banner. It's been one year since the original story broke, that The Sixth Sense filmmaker would be shepherding three horror films that will be released over the next couple of years. The original plan was to have the first Night Chronicles picture start filming this year. It looks like that promise will be kept.
Devil, the first of the Night pics, goes into production in Toronto on October 26. The movie will be directed by brothers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle; both men wrote the script for Quarantine, the remake of Rec that came out last year at this time, and both will also play the role of executive producers on Devil. Universal Pictures has stepped in and will release the movie. Shyamalan gets a producer credit »

Variety reports that Chris Messina (pictured) has been tapped to star in Universal Pictures’ Devil, being produced by M. Night Shyamalan (based on his original story) and his regular filmmaking partner Sam Mercer. The movie gets rolling October 26 in Toronto.
John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle, of Quarantine and the still-unreleased The Poughkeepsie Tapes, will direct and executive-produce Devil (which we first reported on here) from a script by 30 Days Of Night’s Brian Slade. The filmmakers aren’t revealing anything about the storyline, though the trade does report that Messina, who has been seen mostly in comedies like Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Away We Go and Julie & Julia, will play a sobered-up homicide detective named Bowden. Devil is the first in the Night Chronicles, a trilogy of features to be produced one a year by Shayamalan and Media Rights Capital. »

Comedown, an urban horror pic set in London, is the latest project of producers Dominic Norris ("Guilty Hearts") and Gareth Wiley ("Vicky Cristina Barcelona"). The pic, which takes place in a condemned tower block, was penned by Steven Kendall and will be helmed by Menhaj Huda, whose first feature "Kidulthood" won him recognition. It's about six youths who are targeted by a psychopath when trying to set up a relay aerial for a local pirate radio station. Cast includes Geoff Bell from Guy Ritchie's "RocknRolla" and Martin Compston ("Red Road"). Norris said, "Comedown will be a tense and truly terrifying film that will take audiences on a journey with a set of characters they wouldn't necessarily expect to be rooting for." London-based sales outfit Av Pictures has picked up worldwide sales rights to the pic and will be launching it to buyers at Afm. »

They often go overlooked in the discussion of the great director-star pairings, but there's very little doubt that Pedro Almodóvar gets the best out of Penélope Cruz or that she raises the level of his films. True, he's great as it is and Cruz has been better in general in recent years (if you thought she was good winning the gold in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, you should see Elegy), but together, it's just one of those magical combinations that really doesn't come along all that often.
Their latest collaboration is Broken Embraces (Los Abrazos Rotos), and once again, Cruz is building a case for Academy Award consideration. If she does get a nomination, it would be her third in four years, following Vicky Cristina and Almodóvar's Volver. She sure has left Sahara sufficiently behind her, hasn't she?

Brazilian film officials have launched a new campaign to lure Woody Allen to Rio de Janeiro.
The movie bosses want the Vicky Cristina Barcelona director to consider setting his next film there, and, according to the Los Angeles Times newspaper, city chiefs are offering Allen $2 million (GBP1.3 million) in subsidies if he agrees to shoot in the city.
The moviemaker is taking the offer seriously - he recently sent his sister, Letty Aronson, to Rio to scout out locations.
The move to lure Allen to South America comes after city Mayor Eduardo Paes and state Governor Sergio Cabral agreed to merge the city and state film commissions.
Rio is currently on a wave of popularity after winning the chance to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games earlier this month. The city will also be one of several Brazilian sites hosting the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament. »

So Rio Del Janeiro will be hosting South America's very first Olympics (Beating out my home city Chicago). As well as soccer's World Cup in 2016 and 2014 respectively. And now the city has another big goal: Get veteran director Woody Allen to make a film in Rio, to help pretty up the country's image a bit. They're basically hoping this next movie will have the same effect on Rio that Vicky Cristina Barcelona did on its titular city. The Los Angeles Times reports that Woody has been offered two million dollars to come make his next film in Brazil. This is a pretty big deal, considering film productions have been very sparse in the country that hosted shoots of Moonraker and the upcoming Stallone vehicle The Expendables. The country has never really been friendly to tourism or filming, given the rising crime rate over the last decade. But now that there's »

Penelope Cruz has fuelled reports she is engaged to wed actor Javier Bardem after flaunting a dazzling diamond ring in New York on Sunday night.
The Vicky Cristina Barcelona beauty has been dating Bardem since 2007 and the couple was recently forced to deny claims Cruz is pregnant with their first child.
Rumours surfaced last week (ends09Oct09) alleging the stars had gotten engaged while on holiday and had announced their plans to wed to close friends and family.
A source told the New York Daily News, "They're telling friends they will get married."
Cruz has so far refused to comment on the engagement reports, but she only served to heighten speculation when she flashed a new sapphire ring at the premiere of her new movie Broken Embraces at the close of the New York Film Festival.
Representatives for Cruz and Bardem had yet to respond to requests for a comment as WENN went to press. »
