I had a pretty good time watching this one last night. I believe the director Jeremy Kasten also made All Souls Day, a film which did not impress me too much but this was enjoyable throughout, albeit in a pretty silly way. The story sees a lass with cancer joining a family of vampires led by Jeremy Sisto, and her boyfriend subsequently becoming involved, with much resultant mayhem and bloodshed. The film moves at a great pace and the flashy direction keeps everything tight and fun to watch, doing a nice job of making the low budget less apparent. The film doesn't look great, and the effects are kinda silly, what with great gushing not quite realistic blood, but its the sort of thing that is trashy fun if you get into the spirit of it. The acting is relatively decent, with the nominal heroes Matt Keeslar and Clare Kramer doing pretty good work, whilst Jeremy Sisto has fun with an eccentric and amusing part. He doesn't impress in the same way that he did in say, May or the classic TV show Six Feet Under, but he's still pretty watchable. Of the rest of the cast, I perhaps would have liked more from Eric Palladino's character as he seemed pretty likable, whilst the rest of the vampire crew are suitably freakish, with probably Serena Scott Thomas best as an older vamp. One issue with the acting though, although it may just be inept sound design, what with the accents of some of the vamps it is often kinda hard to make out quite what they are saying. It doesn't matter too much as the film is very visual, but it is still a problem. The script is amusing at times and labored at others and the film has the significant problem of coming across a lot similar to Near Dark. Near Dark of course is pretty well indisputably a brilliant film and happens to be one of my all time favorites and the comparisons that this film invites are never favorable, but it just about gets by on a wave of mindless gusto. There's some nudity and plenty of gore, which is endearingly splashy. This is a film where even a broken nose causes a huge outpouring of the red stuff and the excessive nature is really somewhat pleasing. Altogether I can't say that this is a particularly great film, but it kept me entertained and I guess it does the trick if you enjoy low budget mindless splatter. So, probably worth at least a look if you enjoy this kind of thing and you can catch it on television.
