Director Chris Bowman Offers Up a Slice of Humble Pie

11 November 2009 11:57 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Comedies with heart are a weakness of mine. For instance, “World’s Greatest Dad,” while extremely crude and unusual, is impossibly sweet and heartfelt, as is Hal Haberman and Jeremy Passmore’s grossly underrated 2006 superhero flick “Special.” This may explain why I’m drawn to Chris Bowman’s upcoming feature-length debut “Humble Pie” (aka “American Fork”), which is written by “Sasquatch Gang” co-star Hubbel Palmer. What’s more, it’s produced by Jeremy Coon, one of the cinematic wizards behind the creation of “Napoleon Dynamite,” a film that I could literally watch over and over again, nonstop, until the end of time. I kid you not. One of the more interesting aspects of the film is the presence of William Baldwin, who seems to be doing his best Alec Baldwin impersonation. It’s amusing if nothing else. The official synopsis lies below: At nearly 400 pounds, Tracy Orbison (Hubbel Palmer) is a wide target. »

Len Wiseman in Talks to Direct Untitled Post-Apocalyptic Thriller

11 November 2009 10:44 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

We've been hearing Len Wiseman's name thrown around a lot over the past year or two, but despite being courted for some high profile projects, he still doesn't have a gig lined up to follow 2007's Live Free or Die Hard. It's possible that he's just being choosy (which makes sense considering that Die Hard was reportedly a pretty grueling shoot), but it also seems like he's had a bit of bad luck with a few projects falling through or being put on hold. At one point he was supposed to direct the Escape From New York remake, but that seems to be dead, and he is also still attached to the Gears of War movie and the comic book adaptations Atlantis Rising and Shrapnel. However, at this point his next project is shaping up to be something entirely different. According to The Hollywood Reporter [1], Wiseman has signed on »

Defendor Trailer Starring Woody Harrelson

3 September 2009 8:37 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

One of the Canadian films premiering at the Toronto Film Festival this year that seems to be getting a lot of early buzz is Peter Stebbings' Defendor. The film stars Woody Harrelson as a somewhat delusional man who thinks he is a superhero trying to track down his arch enemy Captain Industry. It definitely sounds very similar to Hal Haberman and Jeremy Passmore's Special which featured Michael Rapaport in a nearly identical role, but apparently the script was written way back in 2005. I guess that means it also has no connection to "real-life superheroes" like The Shadow Hare [1], who have recently become YouTube stars. The first trailer for Defendor has turned up online this week, and it looks pretty good, I guess. I generally love Woody Harrelson's comedic performances, but I'm just wondering if the movie's premise will eventually overstay its welcome. I am not that interested »

Tiff 09:  Woody Harrelson Is The Defendor!

18 August 2009 11:33 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

There’s more than a shade of Michael Rapaport-starring lo-fi superhero film Special in Peter StebbingsDefendor, but you know ... the idea of Woody Harrelson wearing a superhero outfit composed partially of duct tape puts enough of a smile on my face that I really don’t mind.

Reality intersects with delusion in the mind of Arthur Poppington (Woody Harrelson), a regular man who adopts a superhero persona known as Defendor, and combs the city streets at night in search of his arch-enemy, Captain Industry.  In his attempts to combat crime and bring down Captain Industry, a drug and weapons dealer who he mistakenly blames for the death of his mother, Defendor ends up befriending a young prostitute, Katerina Debrofkowitz (Kat Dennings).  Armed with unconventional weapons of mass confusion, aided by his new friend, and putting his life on the line, Defendor proves that everyone is capable of making a difference. »

Jason Bourne Scribe to Rewrite Red Dawn Remake

18 June 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

While the cast of the upcoming "Red Dawn" remake is still being put together, LatinoReview is reporting that Tony Gilroy has been hired to rewriter the script, originally put together by Carl Ellsworth (Red Eye, Disturbia) and Jeremy Passmore (Special). Gilroy has previously co-written all three Jason Bourne movie and was recently nominated for two Oscars for writing and directing "Michael Clayton." Gilroy seems like the obvious choice considering that Dan Bradley, the director of the "Red Dawn" remake, was the second unit director on the Jason Bourne films. "Red Dawn" revolves around a group of teenagers who form an impromptu insurgency when their town is invaded by Chinese and Russian soldiers. Set to begin filming in September, the film is scheduled to hit theaters on September 24th, 2010. »

Red Dawn Remake Goes Bourne

18 June 2009 7:49 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

There were a couple of additional casting announcements earlier this week for MGM's Red Dawn remake -- a project that I really couldn't care less about. Joining Chris Hemsworth are Josh Peck (The Wackness) and Adrianne Palicki (Friday Night Lights), who will be playing the same roles played by Charlie Sheen and Jennifer Grey in the original. What I found somewhat interesting, however, was the director that they had chosen for the project: Dan Bradley, second unit director for the last two Bourne movies. He is also the same stunt co-ordinator that was brought on board Quantum of Solace in order to give James Bond a Bourne-style makeover. Clearly they're hoping to make this a gritty, realistic action movie, which is about the last thing I can see Red Dawn becoming. After all, it's about a group of teenagers defending their town from Soviet troops. At any rate, the Bourne »

Blu-Ray Review: Jason Voorhees Returns in Killer Cut of ‘Friday the 13th’

17 June 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The reboot of “Friday the 13th” was another financially successful notch in the belt of Platinum Dunes, the film company behind the remakes of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “The Hitcher,” and “The Amityville Horror”. Making $90 million worldwide and more domestically than any previous Jason Voorhees movie (that didn’t include Freddy Krueger), “Friday the 13th” has a following that will be ecstatic with the excellent Blu-Ray release for the slasher title.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 The Blu-Ray of “Friday the 13th” delivers everything fans could ask for. Not only do they present a longer and better cut of the film in the 9-minutes-longer “Extended Cut,” but the special features enhance the “Friday the 13th” experience and the technical transfer is nearly flawless.

Friday the 13th was released on Blu-Ray on June 16th, 2009.

As for the film itself, my response to “Friday the 13th” is mixed at best. I love »

Josh Peck To Take On Commies

17 June 2009 1:16 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It.s hard to take Josh Peck seriously given his early resume. But a bad Nickelodeon TV show is hardly reason enough to pass up some of Peck.s films. You probably missed The Wackness. You probably missed Special too. If you hadn.t, you.d realize that this dude can act. And that Disney argument? Ryan Gosling was a Mouseketeer and he.s like the best actor around right now. It seems as though director Dan Bradley sees the same in Peck, as he.s hired him to take on Charlie Sheen.s roll in his remake of Red Dawn. According to EW.com, Peck will be starring alongside Star Trek.s Chris Hemsworth, famous for turning James Kirk.s father into a babbling bro, and Friday Night Lights actress, Adrianne Palicki. Discuss: The Long-Awaited Death of the Dtv Stigma

6 April 2009 8:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Back in the VHS days, "direct to video" actually meant something. It meant something Bad, more often than not. The video marketplace allowed a lot of people to make and sell their own flicks, but uh, they were generally pretty terrible. So when someone says "Ugh, I don't wanna rent that. It went direct to video," they're probably dredging up memories of backyard horror flicks or Oliver Gruner action films. But in today's ultra-modern, mega-bandwidth, multi-distributive movie landscape, "direct to video" can mean a whole lot of things.

Take the recent French horror film Inside, which played at festivals all over the world, opened theatrically in several countries, and got a basic (but well-received) DVD release from The Weinstein Company here in the States. So as far as the U.S. is concerned, this is considered a "direct to video" title. Yet it's an awesome film. How can that be? »
