[TV] Superman: The Complete Animated Series

3 hours ago | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

When Superman: The Animated Series debuted that bright childhood day, the first thing I remember thinking was “It’s not as cool as Batman.” Dropping the black paper background of Batman: The Animated Series in favor of a brighter and more traditional white, Superman was a cheerier series right from the outset. Whereas Batman only gave passing glances to the dark origin of Bruce Wayne’s caped crusader, Superman’s is embroiled in many of the plots for each episode. When it comes to DC iconography, the difference between the significance of the emblems on each hero’s chest becomes even more apparent in the animated series. Batman’s yellow and black bat logo became an instrument, a tool; Superman’s logo, however, the sign of his lineage, works its way into many of the show’s storylines. Blu-ray Capsule Review: Rocky - The Undisputed Collection

14 hours ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Rocky - The Undisputed Collection Quick Thoughts: This new Blu-ray collection of the Rocky franchise replaces my previous 2004 DVD collection, which contained the first five films and my separate copy of 2007's Rocky Balboa. Of course, if you own those two items you already own pretty much everything included in this new set as the lone new feature is a new interactive game called "Feeling Strong Now!" which is just a Rocky trivia feature hardly giving enough reason to buy this set.

The Blu-ray presentation is hardly impressive, only improving in quality as we get later and later down the line, which is no surprise as the negatives haven't been sitting around for as long and aren't in need of any severe amount of restoration. However, none of these films saw any kind of nw restoration and it shows.

Outside of the picture quality of Rocky Balboa, Rocky is the best of the bunch, »

Blu-Ray Review: Rocky Balboa Fights His Way to ‘Undisputed Collection’

29 November 2009 2:01 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – There are very few characters as iconic as Rocky Balboa. A few images, sound bites, or even just a few notes of a song and audiences of the right age are transported back to the first time they saw the Best Picture-winning “Rocky,” the film that made Sylvester Stallone a star over three decades ago. That beloved sports film and the five sequels that followed have been collected on Blu-Ray for the first time in “Rocky: The Undisputed Collection”.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

The original “Rocky” looks a little more dated with each passing year, but the spirit of the film is still effective. Watching it again for the first time in years, I was struck by how many films that followed it have copied the basic beats and tone of the film. Stallone’s smartest move with “Rocky” was keeping it simple; making it a story to which everyone could relate. »

On top of the two films you see below I also watched Rocky, Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky Balboa, the director's cut of Terminator Salvation, Public Enemies and A Christmas Tale, all of which were on Blu-ray and will be reviewed promptly. There are also a few other new site updates around the corner and I will be asking for your input on potential site improvements in the very near future as next weekend I plan on opening up the discussion asking for what you currently like about the site and what you hope could be improved. Now don't go commenting on these things below, keep your ideas for later on.

For now, let's take a look at what I watched this past week and hear what you watched in the comments below.

Opinion In A Haystack: Eric Lichtenfeld Part 2

Interview: Eric Lichtenfeld Part 2 of 2

This is the second half of my talk with Eric Lichtenfeld, author of Action Speaks Louder: Violence, Spectacle, and the American Action Movie. Please don’t forget to check out the first half of this interview or my original review of his book.

Bob Rose: Do you enjoy action film satires such as True Lies, Shoot ’Em Up, or Hot Fuzz?

Eric Lichtenfeld: I like True Lies a lot.

Br: It’s definitely a satire, at least to some degree.

El: Yes, a loving one. It’s one of those films that works both ways. I think Robocop is an even better example than True Lies, but both of them illustrate this well: it’s a satire that works as a movie even if you don’t get the satire. You don’t watch them and think that there is something you’re missing. »

Rocky: The Undisputed Collection – Blu-ray Review

18 November 2009 12:37 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Rocky

Times like these, I hate reviewing classic films. What can I add that hasn’t already been said or covered about the 1976 Best Picture winner? Well, other than what film should have won it, but Rocky is a more than worthy candidate for the statue. It sometimes gets criticism for not showing enough of the epic fight at the end, but I feel that’s a brilliant move as we know these men will go the distance. The performances are excellent, the direction is up to par, and the story is a timeless classic. Truthfully, the alternate ending where Rocky throws the fight would have been interesting to see.

9/10

Rocky II

I’d forgotten what a depressing trip this was, which makes Rocky’s eventual win that much sweeter by the end of the film. This marked Sylvester Stallone’s second directorial debut and for the most part he »

Standing Eight Count

2 November 2009 4:38 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Yesterday I sat down once again to watch Martin Scorsese’s 1980 masterpiece Raging Bull, taking my viewings somewhere into double figures. I consider it to be the director’s finest film (just edging out Mean Streets), and De Niro’s titular Bull, Jake Lamotta, the actor’s premier performance. It is a film that exercises an extraordinary hold, drawing me in time and again in search of new meaning. And it never fails to deliver. But as the credits role I always ask myself the same question: “Why does the film industry have such an abiding love affair with the sweet science?” Like a punch-drunk journeyman surviving on a mix of experience, gut instinct and crude reflex, the fight film, despite its often indelicate and rough-edged familiarity, continues to bewitch filmmakers and confound audiences with an Ali-esque dexterity. New York City & Philadelphia Go Head-To-Head In The World Series -- And In Cinema History!

28 October 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies aren't exactly the fiercest of rivals, but there is sure to be blood — or maybe just some home runs, botched calls and heated arguments with umpires — when the two baseball teams collide for Game 1 of the World Series this evening (so long as the rain stays away that is!).

As New Yorkers and Philadelphians prepare for battle, we got to wondering about some of the other rivalries already in place between the two cities — in motion picture form, that is. I'm not necessarily talking about fictional competitions between NYC and Philly, so much as stacking movies set in those cities against one another.

Through that framework, you'd be surprised at how many competing movies there are between the Empire and Keystone States — just hit the jump and see the head-to-head match-ups for yourself!

'Stargate' Gets Its Due, 'Battlestar Galactica' Finds A Plan And More, In The DVD Report For October 27

27 October 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Fifteen years ago I was planning my nights around episodes of "Mystery Science Theater," programming math cheats into my graphing calculator and filming "60 Minutes"-style interviews with Cobra Commander. I was also madly in love with director Roland Emmerich's "Stargate," the German filmmaker's bold sci-fi experiment in 1994 that foreshadowed his big-budget juggernaut "Independence Day" only two years later. "Stargate" is now bowing on Blu-ray as a "15th Anniversary Edition," and it's one of a handful of notable releases during an otherwise forgettable DVD week.

"Stargate" finds Kurt Russell as a suicidal, no-nonsense military officer tasked to lead a group of battle-hardened veterans -- and soft-skinned ninny scientist James Spader -- through a newly discovered wormhole to an unknown destination. The other side winds up being a sandy desert planet whose native inhabitants have kept their human slaves in bondage under the guise of ancient Egypt. It was a wholly original concept, »

Rumor Debunked: Sylvester Stallone Is Not Planning Rocky 7

27 October 2009 2:30 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

For a week, rumors have circulated that Sylvester Stallone was planning on making Rocky 7 after an interview with Tele 5 in Germany was quoted by Teensay.co.uk.

I know I'll probably make a fool of myself if I make another Rocky film after turning 60. I also know there's gonna be a lot of criticism. Even my wife says, "Don't do it. You're embarrassing the kids." But I told her, "If I don't try I'll be a really unhappy man." You have to do it. Artists like me have to go through the dark over and over again.

Apparently, Stallone was talking about his mindset before making Rocky Balboa, otherwise known as Rocky 6, and not about another Rocky movie. European readers over at Chud corrected the Internet mistranslation. Some Stallone-rs may be disappointed with the news, but don't worry. Sly is definitely continuing his legacy with Rambo 5.

Stallone Not Making 'Rocky VII' After All

26 October 2009 10:23 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

It turns out Sylvester Stallone isn't so much thinking about Rocky VII. And thank goodness that's the case. Several days ago, a translation from a German site indicated that Stallone was considering a sixth sequel, one that would seem completely superfluous given how good Rocky Balboa was.

Now, Chud readers have looked a little more closely at the quote and point out that he was actually referring to Rocky Balboa in the past tense, and not some crazy idea of putting the gloves back on. Here's the full quote:

"I know people would laugh at it, as I would if someone were making The Godfather Part 10. Enough! But I also know that if I succeed, it will be because this is a film about aging, not about boxing. I know it will provoke criticism. Even my wife said to me, 'Leave it. You'll embarrass the children.' But I said, »

Stallone Wants To Make Rocky VII

26 October 2009 4:13 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

More bad news. Lately it seems to be all I bring. Sylvester Stallone is planning to bring back his ever popular boxer Rocky Balboa for a seventh round in the ring. Yes, that's right, a Rocky VII is being planned. Why? I don't know, but Stallone claims that he has to do it, which is a shame, since Rocky Balboa was such a perfect ending for the character. The movie, if greenlit (and I see no reason why it shouldn't be, seeing as Rocky Balboa was a huge success, bringing in $155 million on a $24 million budget), will probably start shooting late 2010 or early 2011, depending on when Stallone is finished filming Rambo 5, another unnecessary sequel of his. "I know I'll probably make a fool of myself if I make another 'Rocky' film after turning 60. I also know there's gonna be a lot of criticism. Even my wife says, 'Don't do it. »

Stallone Shot a Scene with Arnold and Bruce

25 October 2009 9:56 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Yesterday, Sylvester Stallone filmed a scene with Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger for his upcoming August release The Expendables.  Finally, the three biggest action heroes of our time are going to be on camera.  Plus that Planet Hollywood reunion we’ve all been waiting for.

The announcement came from set blogger Ethelmae:  “While I can’t/don’t want to give too much away I can tell you that Arnold’s character is Trench and Bruce is Church, the scene was shot in an empty church without extras and minimal set dec[oration] and it has tension and humor.”

Stallone plays Barney Ross, a leader of a group of “expendable” mercenaries sent into South America to overthrow a dictator.  The rest of the team consists of Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, “Stone ColdSteve Austin, Ufc fighter Randy Couture, and Eric Roberts.  The only action stars missing from this are Van Damme, »

Is Sly Lacing Up Gloves for 'Rocky VI'...?

25 October 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Sylvester Stallone has revealed to Tele5 Germany that he is working on a seventh 'Rocky' film, even though his wife and kids think that such a move would be a huge embarrassment (there's a clue).

"I know I'll probably make a fool of myself if I make another 'Rocky' film after turning 60," said Stallone, who is now 63 years old. "I also know there's gonna be a lot of criticism. Even my wife says, 'Don't do it. You're embarrassing the kids'. But I told her, 'If I don't try I'll be a really unhappy man.'"

"I know it's ludicrous and everyone would laugh," he added. "I would laugh about it. But I also know that I'd be successful if I can make this a film about becoming older, not about boxing but about myself."

Update: Sylvester Stallone Not Making Rocky 7

25 October 2009 7:35 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

According to Teen Say, Sylvester Stallone is planning on getting back in the ring with Rocky 7 once he finishes making Rambo V: A Savage Hunt.

The actor had this to say about the prospects of another Rocky film:

"I know I'll probably make a fool of myself if I make another 'Rocky' film after turning 60. I also know there's gonna be a lot of criticism. Even my wife says, 'Don't do it. You're embarrassing the kids'. But I told her, 'If I don't try I'll be a really unhappy man.'

Despite all this, Stallone seems to have a lighthearted mindset about Rocky 7:

"I know it's ludicrous and everyone would laugh. I would laugh about it. But I also know that I'd be successful if I can make this a film about becoming older, not about boxing but about myself."

Because You Asked For It: Stallone Wants To Make Rocky 7

25 October 2009 4:15 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Several sites are reporting that, according to an interview with Tele5 Germany, Sly Stallone wants to make a seventh Rocky movie. But can it make up for Rocky IV? Will it be better than Rocky IV? Doubtful, on both accounts. But what more could you ask for? Rocky Balboa was surprisingly solid, and the Rocky franchise is one of sports movies' greatest. So, go learn German, read the interview, and report back to us. Translated from Babel Fish, the text looks like this: I know people would laugh at it, as I would if someone were making The Godfather Part 10. Enough! But I also know that if I succeed, it will be because this is a film about aging, not about boxing. I know it will provoke criticism. Even my wife said to me, Leave it. You'll embarrass the children. Rocky Jumping Back in the Ring

25 October 2009 3:47 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

I’m a huge fan of the Rocky movies. I have been since 3rd grade when I was home sick for a week and my dad decided to rent all five of the movies for me.

My personal favorite in the series is Rocky IV, in which Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky fights Dolph Lundgren’s intimidatingly droid-esque Communist. Seriously, it’s epic. Classic underdog story, coupled with an excellent montage bit.

Rocky V was an unfortunate follow-up to the fourth film, which Stallone himself even once rated 0 out of 10 in an interview.

Luckily, Stallone decided to add a sixth film to the franchise with Rocky Balboa which, while not amazing, was pretty decent and managed to redeem the series after Rocky V.

Now Stallone is ready to take Rocky Balboa back to the ring. After Stallone wraps up with Rambo 5 and The Expendables, he’s planning on tackling Rocky VII. »
