Standing Eight Count

Yesterday I sat down once again to watch Martin Scorsese’s 1980 masterpiece Raging Bull, taking my viewings somewhere into double figures. I consider it to be the director’s finest film (just edging out Mean Streets), and De Niro’s titular Bull, Jake Lamotta, the actor’s premier performance. It is a film that exercises an extraordinary hold, drawing me in time and again in search of new meaning. And it never fails to deliver. But as the credits role I always ask myself the same question: “Why does the film industry have such an abiding love affair with the sweet science?” Like a punch-drunk journeyman surviving on a mix of experience, gut instinct and crude reflex, the fight film, despite its often indelicate and rough-edged familiarity, continues to bewitch filmmakers and confound audiences with an Ali-esque dexterity. ShockTillYouDrop reports that Sam Raimi's debut feature, 1981's The Evil Dead, will be returning to the big screen in the U.S. and Canada via a midnight movie series sponsored by writer/director/Rocky Balboa Jr. Sage Stallone's and Army of Darkness editor Bob Murawski's Grindhouse Releasing, which specializes in releasing classic horror and explotation films.

Sayeth Ash himself, Bruce Campbell: "Nothing can prepare an audience for what they are about to see, because nothing punishes an audience like Evil Dead - especially on the big screen. I'm really glad it's back. People are gonna be hurt."

New York City & Philadelphia Go Head-To-Head In The World Series -- And In Cinema History!

28 October 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies aren't exactly the fiercest of rivals, but there is sure to be blood — or maybe just some home runs, botched calls and heated arguments with umpires — when the two baseball teams collide for Game 1 of the World Series this evening (so long as the rain stays away that is!).

As New Yorkers and Philadelphians prepare for battle, we got to wondering about some of the other rivalries already in place between the two cities — in motion picture form, that is. I'm not necessarily talking about fictional competitions between NYC and Philly, so much as stacking movies set in those cities against one another.

Through that framework, you'd be surprised at how many competing movies there are between the Empire and Keystone States — just hit the jump and see the head-to-head match-ups for yourself!

'Stargate' Gets Its Due, 'Battlestar Galactica' Finds A Plan And More, In The DVD Report For October 27

27 October 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Fifteen years ago I was planning my nights around episodes of "Mystery Science Theater," programming math cheats into my graphing calculator and filming "60 Minutes"-style interviews with Cobra Commander. I was also madly in love with director Roland Emmerich's "Stargate," the German filmmaker's bold sci-fi experiment in 1994 that foreshadowed his big-budget juggernaut "Independence Day" only two years later. "Stargate" is now bowing on Blu-ray as a "15th Anniversary Edition," and it's one of a handful of notable releases during an otherwise forgettable DVD week.

"Stargate" finds Kurt Russell as a suicidal, no-nonsense military officer tasked to lead a group of battle-hardened veterans -- and soft-skinned ninny scientist James Spader -- through a newly discovered wormhole to an unknown destination. The other side winds up being a sandy desert planet whose native inhabitants have kept their human slaves in bondage under the guise of ancient Egypt. It was a wholly original concept, »

Rumor Debunked: Sylvester Stallone Is Not Planning Rocky 7

27 October 2009 2:30 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

For a week, rumors have circulated that Sylvester Stallone was planning on making Rocky 7 after an interview with Tele 5 in Germany was quoted by Teensay.co.uk.

I know I'll probably make a fool of myself if I make another Rocky film after turning 60. I also know there's gonna be a lot of criticism. Even my wife says, "Don't do it. You're embarrassing the kids." But I told her, "If I don't try I'll be a really unhappy man." You have to do it. Artists like me have to go through the dark over and over again.

Apparently, Stallone was talking about his mindset before making Rocky Balboa, otherwise known as Rocky 6, and not about another Rocky movie. European readers over at Chud corrected the Internet mistranslation. Some Stallone-rs may be disappointed with the news, but don't worry. Sly is definitely continuing his legacy with Rambo 5.

Stallone Not Making 'Rocky VII' After All

26 October 2009 10:23 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

It turns out Sylvester Stallone isn't so much thinking about Rocky VII. And thank goodness that's the case. Several days ago, a translation from a German site indicated that Stallone was considering a sixth sequel, one that would seem completely superfluous given how good Rocky Balboa was.

Now, Chud readers have looked a little more closely at the quote and point out that he was actually referring to Rocky Balboa in the past tense, and not some crazy idea of putting the gloves back on. Here's the full quote:

"I know people would laugh at it, as I would if someone were making The Godfather Part 10. Enough! But I also know that if I succeed, it will be because this is a film about aging, not about boxing. I know it will provoke criticism. Even my wife said to me, 'Leave it. You'll embarrass the children.' But I said, »

Stallone Wants To Make Rocky VII

26 October 2009 4:13 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

More bad news. Lately it seems to be all I bring. Sylvester Stallone is planning to bring back his ever popular boxer Rocky Balboa for a seventh round in the ring. Yes, that's right, a Rocky VII is being planned. Why? I don't know, but Stallone claims that he has to do it, which is a shame, since Rocky Balboa was such a perfect ending for the character. The movie, if greenlit (and I see no reason why it shouldn't be, seeing as Rocky Balboa was a huge success, bringing in $155 million on a $24 million budget), will probably start shooting late 2010 or early 2011, depending on when Stallone is finished filming Rambo 5, another unnecessary sequel of his. "I know I'll probably make a fool of myself if I make another 'Rocky' film after turning 60. I also know there's gonna be a lot of criticism. Even my wife says, 'Don't do it. »

Stallone Shot a Scene with Arnold and Bruce

25 October 2009 9:56 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Yesterday, Sylvester Stallone filmed a scene with Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger for his upcoming August release The Expendables.  Finally, the three biggest action heroes of our time are going to be on camera.  Plus that Planet Hollywood reunion we’ve all been waiting for.

The announcement came from set blogger Ethelmae:  “While I can’t/don’t want to give too much away I can tell you that Arnold’s character is Trench and Bruce is Church, the scene was shot in an empty church without extras and minimal set dec[oration] and it has tension and humor.”

Stallone plays Barney Ross, a leader of a group of “expendable” mercenaries sent into South America to overthrow a dictator.  The rest of the team consists of Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, “Stone ColdSteve Austin, Ufc fighter Randy Couture, and Eric Roberts.  The only action stars missing from this are Van Damme, »

Is Sly Lacing Up Gloves for 'Rocky VI'...?

25 October 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Sylvester Stallone has revealed to Tele5 Germany that he is working on a seventh 'Rocky' film, even though his wife and kids think that such a move would be a huge embarrassment (there's a clue).

"I know I'll probably make a fool of myself if I make another 'Rocky' film after turning 60," said Stallone, who is now 63 years old. "I also know there's gonna be a lot of criticism. Even my wife says, 'Don't do it. You're embarrassing the kids'. But I told her, 'If I don't try I'll be a really unhappy man.'"

"I know it's ludicrous and everyone would laugh," he added. "I would laugh about it. But I also know that I'd be successful if I can make this a film about becoming older, not about boxing but about myself."

Update: Sylvester Stallone Not Making Rocky 7

25 October 2009 7:35 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

According to Teen Say, Sylvester Stallone is planning on getting back in the ring with Rocky 7 once he finishes making Rambo V: A Savage Hunt.

The actor had this to say about the prospects of another Rocky film:

"I know I'll probably make a fool of myself if I make another 'Rocky' film after turning 60. I also know there's gonna be a lot of criticism. Even my wife says, 'Don't do it. You're embarrassing the kids'. But I told her, 'If I don't try I'll be a really unhappy man.'

Despite all this, Stallone seems to have a lighthearted mindset about Rocky 7:

"I know it's ludicrous and everyone would laugh. I would laugh about it. But I also know that I'd be successful if I can make this a film about becoming older, not about boxing but about myself."

Because You Asked For It: Stallone Wants To Make Rocky 7

25 October 2009 4:15 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Several sites are reporting that, according to an interview with Tele5 Germany, Sly Stallone wants to make a seventh Rocky movie. But can it make up for Rocky IV? Will it be better than Rocky IV? Doubtful, on both accounts. But what more could you ask for? Rocky Balboa was surprisingly solid, and the Rocky franchise is one of sports movies' greatest. So, go learn German, read the interview, and report back to us. Translated from Babel Fish, the text looks like this: I know people would laugh at it, as I would if someone were making The Godfather Part 10. Enough! But I also know that if I succeed, it will be because this is a film about aging, not about boxing. I know it will provoke criticism. Even my wife said to me, Leave it. You'll embarrass the children. Rocky Jumping Back in the Ring

25 October 2009 3:47 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

I’m a huge fan of the Rocky movies. I have been since 3rd grade when I was home sick for a week and my dad decided to rent all five of the movies for me.

My personal favorite in the series is Rocky IV, in which Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky fights Dolph Lundgren’s intimidatingly droid-esque Communist. Seriously, it’s epic. Classic underdog story, coupled with an excellent montage bit.

Rocky V was an unfortunate follow-up to the fourth film, which Stallone himself even once rated 0 out of 10 in an interview.

Luckily, Stallone decided to add a sixth film to the franchise with Rocky Balboa which, while not amazing, was pretty decent and managed to redeem the series after Rocky V.

Now Stallone is ready to take Rocky Balboa back to the ring. After Stallone wraps up with Rambo 5 and The Expendables, he’s planning on tackling Rocky VII. »

Stallone Making Rocky 7 After Rambo 5?

25 October 2009 10:58 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Despite some rumblings here and there, here’s a little piece of news that I didn’t see actually becoming a reality. We already know Sylvester Stallone is well underway with his awesome looking The Expendables, and that he’s already got Rambo 5 in the pipeline. But that’s not all - apparently after that, Sly is going to give his most well known character another bout in the ring with another Rocky flick.

Stallone reportedly spoke to Tele 5 in Germany recently and since then, the quotes from that interview have made their way online and spread like wild fire (don’t they always?). The quotes are being sourced everywhere from Teen Say (special thanks to /Film for picking it up from them), where Stallone reveals his desire/intention to make Rocky 7. Here’s what he had to say:

Take this with a huge grain of salt -- make that smelling salts. Sylvester Stallone has told Tele5 Germany that he wants to make Rocky 7, even though it might embarrass his family and himself. A German-language transcript of the interview is available at the site; translated by Babel Fish, my interpretation is: 'I know people would laugh at it, as I would if someone were making The Godfather Part 10. Enough! But I also know that if I succeed, it will be because this is a film about aging, not about boxing. I know it will provoke criticism. Even my wife said to me, Leave it. Stallone is Going to Make Rocky 7 After Finishing Rambo 5

24 October 2009 2:58 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Damn you Sly Stallone! There's a story making its way around the web right now that features a few new quotes from Sylvester Stallone that say that he just announced that he'll be going back to playing Rocky Balboa yet again in Rocky 7. Apparently Stallone was talking with Tele 5 in Germany and the quotes ended up online at places like TeenSay.co.uk (via SlashFilm). We already know that Sly is now finishing up The Expendables, due for release next August, and got a greenlight from Nu Image to make Rambo 5 next year. If all this is to be believed, then he'll follow that up yet with Rocky 7, presumably in late 2010 or early 2011. Stallone Hates His Kids, Wants to Make Rocky 7

23 October 2009 10:50 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Good god, another Rocky movie? Then again, didn’t we all thought that exact same thing when he made “Rocky Balboa” and later, “Rambo”? Fact is, no one has wanted Sylvester Stallone to return to his two aging characters, but he did it anyway, and the box office has proven his instincts correct. Now Stallone wants to make another Rocky movie (the seventh in the franchise), even if his kids are begging him not to. One presumes they don’t like seeing their 63-year old dad (64 or 65 by the time the movie gets made, probably) in glistening boxers trading jabs in the ring with some guy half his age. DigitalSpy reports Stallone telling a German site Tele5 Germany: “I know I’ll probably make a fool of myself if I make another Rocky film after turning 60. Even my wife says, ‘Don’t do it. Stallone Thinking of Getting Back in the Ring Again

23 October 2009 10:39 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Back in 1984, "Weird Al" Yankovic released a parody of "The Eye of the Tiger" called "Theme from Rocky Xiii" in which Rocky Balboa owns a deli:

Try the rye or the kaiser, they're our special tonight

If you want, you can have an appetizer

You might like our salami and the liver’s alright

And they'd really go well with the rye or the kaiser

It wasn't very close to the truth then, when Sylvester Stallone had only made three Rocky movies, and for a long time it looked like he'd stop at five. However, Rocky Balboa is probably the second-best movie in the franchise and did very well, so naturally, Stallone might make a seventh flick. »

63-year-old Sylvester Stallone is working on Rocky 7 whether you like it or not.
