Berenstain Bears Movie Announced

11 hours ago | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

I remember seeing a trailer for the live action Chipmunks movie, and after I picked my jaw up off the floor, I realized without a doubt that computer generated Smurfs were soon to follow.  Sure enough, word came not long after that such a movie was being planned and the writers of Shrek were considering the screenplay.  However, nothing prepared me for the news I read last week that a Berenstain Bears movie is now in the works. Walden Media, the production company responsible for The Chronicle of Narnia movies, has purchased the rights to the Berentstain books, and Shawn Levy, who directed Night at the Museum, will produce the project. Levy spoke with USA Today [1] last week and discussed some of his plans for the new movie.  Levy described the film as a “warm-hearted comedy about family, and a different kind of family.”  He didn’t drop any hints »

Blu-ray Review: Night at the Museum 2

6 November 2009 3:09 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Night at the Museum 2 is exactly what a Hollywood sequel needs to be. Bigger, louder, filled with more famous faces and almost the same story as the first. It is on its way to eclipsing the success of the first and it hits Blu-ray and DVD next week.

Ben Stiller gathers his Natm cohort as they take their mix of slapstick and Scooby Doo to Washington D.C. where the Smithsonian archives are bought to life by the power of Ahkmenrah’s Tablet. Shawn Levy’s family friendly Night at the Museum grossed nearly $600m worldwide so a sequel was fairly inevitable and in these risk aversive climate the Battle of the Smithsonian needed only to rekindle the comedic chaos and broad dramatic strokes of the original to succeed.

It’s no surprise that the sequel does not stray from this path, and this is a blessing and a curse. »

Berenstain Bears Movie Coming to Theaters

5 November 2009 9:32 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

There are only a couple of reason why you clicked through to read this article. A) You have kids and they still enjoy reading the books and watching the cartoons made popular by Jan and Stan Berenstain or B) You have a morbid sense of curiosity and just had to see what all the hubbub is about.

Either way, the news is true; Coming Soon points to a report from USA Today stating that Walden Media has bought the movie rights to produce The Berenstain Bears movie adaptation. The film will be a comedy with a mix of live-action and CGI (of course it will). No 3D has been announced yet, but just wait, it won’t be far behind, I’m sure.

On top of grabbing a rather obscure childrens’ property (maybe obscure isn’t the right word, let’s say ‘lesser-known children’s property’) like the Berenstain Bears, »

The Berenstain Bears Go to Hollywood!

4 November 2009 9:15 PM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Oh my goodness, my inner five-year-old (who is always quite present) is absolutely giddy right now.

The last couple of months have seen screen adaptations of a couple of my favorite childhood books: Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Where the Wild Things Are. Now, another of my childhood staples is hitting the big screen.

I remember my parents reading me a different Berenstain Bears book almost every night before going to bed, complete with different voices for each of the characters and the occasional insertion of mine and my brother’s names in place of Sister Bear and Brother Bear.

Now, the beloved family of The Berenstain Bears is getting its own feature film, courtesy of Walden Media who recently acquired the movie rights to the series.

Clearly, my inner five-year-old is filled with sentimental excitement.

For those of you who happen to be unfamiliar with the series, »

Berenstain Bears Movie in Development

4 November 2009 9:29 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

When I was a kid, I owned a few of the Berenstain Bears books, and I seem to recall watching a couple of animated holiday specials as well. I guess it's not surprising that the Bears are still a fixture of children's literature today, although they've added some pretty strange titles in the years since I read them (The Berenstain Bears And the Drug Free Zone, The Berenstain Bears No Guns Allowed... Wtf?). Anyway, the point is, they've been around for almost 50 years and they're a pretty well-recognized brand at this point, so it's about time they made a movie... right? This week USA Today [1] revealed that Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) will produce a hybrid live action/CG feature film based on The Berenstain Bears for Walden Media. He describes it as a family comedy with the same tone as Will Ferrell's Elf: "witty but never »

Shawn Levy and the Berenstain Bears

3 November 2009 7:31 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Walden Media has picked up the rights to the Berenstain Bears with Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, The Pink Panther) as a producer.  No word on whether Levy will direct, though his next project is likely Real Steel with Hugh Jackman.

According to THR, the plan is to make a live-action movie that also mixes in CGI.  That seems to be the trend these days thanks to Garfield, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Scooby Doo.  Now we’re getting the Berenstain Bears and Marmaduke.

There are over 250 Berenstain Bear books in the series originating in 1962 with Stan and Jan Berenstain.  The morality stories help young readers deal with life situations like the birds and the bees (pictured right), bullies, and eating too much junk food.  There hasn’t been a bear family this boring since Goldilocks’ adventures in small, medium, and large sized bowls, chairs, and beds.

'Paranormal Activity' Could Get A Sequel But 'District 9' Might Not In Today's Dailies -- 11/3/09

3 November 2009 4:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

--Paramount is actively working on plans for a "Paranormal Activity" sequel. While a sequel would clearly lose the surprise factor that's made the Oren Peli-directed horror film such a success, folks behind the film insist that they can "come up with the right creative and marketing approach." (THR)

--On the flip side, studio heads at Sony are hoping that Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp are up for a "District 9" sequel, but the producer-director pair is allegedly holding off until they "figure out what the story is and organize their respective schedules." Sony's hopes are hardly surprising as "District 9" has officially crossed the $200 million threshold, a fantastic result based on the movie's $30 million budget. (Deadline Hollywood Daily)

--Could Sandy Collora's "Hunter Prey" be the next "District 9" or "Paranormal Activity"? You can judge for yourself by checking out production images from the independently produced science fiction film, »

The Berenstain Bears Get an Off-Base Update

3 November 2009 3:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Another classic cartoon is getting ready for the feature treatment. This time, it's your friendly neighborhood bears. USA Today reports that Shawn Levy (director of the Night at the Museum flicks) is gearing up to produce The Berenstain Bears into a feature comedy with Walden Media. This cartoon family has been around since 1962, and have had a handful of television specials, a series in the mid-80s, and another in 2003.

But, like anything Hollywood, the family is getting updated. They won't just live in Bear Country this time around. Levy is planning a mix of live action and computer animation where "the comedy comes from this bear family coexisting in a more recognizably real world." That means updates on mom's polka dots, dad's overalls, and, presumably, interaction with humans. The plan is to incorporate details from popular books in the series, and Walden Media CEO Michael Bostick compares the clan »

This is Happening: A Berenstain Bears Movie

3 November 2009 11:35 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Shawn Levy, director of the Night at the Museum franchise, is embarking on something akin to making a movie out of a board game -- which is dumb (we're looking at you, Ridley Scott) -- he's producing a movie based on the popular series of children's books known as The Berenstain Bears. As you may note, The Berenstain Bears follows the story of Papa Bear, the woodworker father; Mama Bear, his homemaker wife; and their three children: Brother Bear, Sister Bear, and Honey Bear. Their stories are set in Bear Country, a society composed entirely of bears. Their story lines typically follow the Bear family as they deal with topics relevant to both children and parents. They appears in a 1985 TV series of the same name, as well as another series that ran on PBS in 2003-2004. Personally, I was not aware that The Berenstain Bears was such a lucrative property. I »

Shawn Levy Bringing the Berenstain Bears to the Big Screen

3 November 2009 11:03 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Though Stephen Colbert has warned us of the unrivaled threat bears pose to civilization, those of us who grew up with a certain bear family know that they are actually wholesome, loving and full of great lessons to teach children. I'm speaking of none other than the almost-50-year old family, The Berenstain Bears. The beloved book series, spawned in 1962, has taught generations of children not only to read, but about various life lessons and facts. Now USA Today reports that Walden Media and director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) will bring the bears to life in a comedy blending live-action and computer animation. Levy will certainly have plenty to pull from as The Berenstain Bears library has over 200 titles to choose from for inspiration. The average story dealt with the parental exploits of the aptly named Mama and Papa Bear as they taught their children, Brother and Sister Bear, »

Thought Owen Wilson and Marmaduke Was Bad? How About Shawn Levy and the Berenstain Bears?

3 November 2009 9:23 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

It is as if each successive news item along these lines was a more challenging trial. Seriously, considering a rash of these recent cash-in film announcements is like staring down a gauntlet that would make a pack of Vikings cry. First there's the Mattel stuff: Battleship (which I've heard talk could be a lot better than anyone expects, but I remain skeptical) and Barbie. Then we get Owen Wilson cast as Marmaduke, the dog that doesn't talk except when he's in a big, pointless movie. And now this: my favorite director, Night at the Museum's Shawn Levy, is producing a movie about bears that dress like people. Walden Media picked up the rights to make a film based on the Berenstain Bears books, and has tapped Shawn Levy to help make the live-action and CGI hybrid movie. Bad Idea: The Berenstain Bears Are Becoming A Movie

3 November 2009 7:13 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

We're all allowed to look sarcastically back at our own childhoods. The fashions, the belief in crazy superstitions, that one decision to cut your own hair. But some things are sacred, and that includes The Berenstain Bears, the classic series of books about a family of bears who have good morals and a perfect family life, but were also, for whatever reason, insanely entertaining to read. And now, of course, they're going to be a movie that's described as "witty but never sarcastic" by producer Shawn Levy, who as a director has brought us the first two Night at the Museum movies. According to USA Today, writers have yet to be hired for the film, but Levy has all kinds of ideas about what it should look like. "I'd like the film to be un-ironic about its family connections but have a wry comedic sensibility that isn't oblivious to the »

Owen Wilson To Let His Inner Dog Out In 'Marmaduke' Movie

3 November 2009 6:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The last time we saw actor Owen Wilson playing with dogs, it was in the 2008 adaptation of John Grogan's touchingly heartbreaking book "Marley & Me." In this latest bit of news, we learn that Wilson will move from playing with dogs to simply playing one.

Wilson is locked to star in "Marmaduke," a big-screen adaptation of Brad Anderson's long-running newspaper comic strip. The adaptation had itself been revealed a couple of weeks ago, but this final bit of news puts the finishing touch on a cast that includes William H. Macy, Judy Greer, Lee Pace as the titular great dane's human family and Fergie, Emma Stone, George Lopez, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Steve Coogan, Damon Wayans and Marlon Wayans as the voices of Marmaduke's pals in the animal kingdom.

The story, penned by "License to Wed" writers Tim Rasmussen and Vince Di Meglio, sounds like a canine-infused take on "West Side Story. »

With the first "Berenstain Bears" book being published in the 1960s, many of us grew up on the adventures of Ma, Pa, Brother and Sister (my personal fave was "Learn About Strangers," which appropriately creeped me out for weeks). Berenstain Bears Headed To The Screen

Shawn Levy, he of Cheaper By The Dozen and Night at the Museum, has trained his sights upon a children's favourite series, The Berenstain Bears, and aims to turn the slight-but-sweet stories of a family of bears into a new film. Levy will produce but there's no word yet on whether he'll direct what's envisaged as a mix of CGI and live-action.The four bears, Papa Bear, Mama Bear, Brother Bear and Sister Bear (we're saying they might need names before the cameras roll) live in a house in a tree. In the books, they live in Bear Country surrounded by other bears, but we're not entirely clear if that's something Levy wants to keep, since he told USA Today that, "The comedy comes from this bear family coexisting in a more recognizably real world."As regards making the family work onscreen, Levy also said that, "I'd like the film »

Shawn Levy to Produce Berenstain Bears Feature

2 November 2009 6:45 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

USA Today is reporting that Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy will produce a feature film based on The Berenstain Bears books.

The comedy will be a mix of live-action and computer animation.

Walden Media has acquired the film rights to the popular books written by Jan and the late Stan Berenstain.

"I'd like the film to be un-ironic about its family connections but have a wry comedic sensibility that isn't oblivious to the fact that they're bears," Levy said. "The comedy comes from this bear family coexisting in a more recognizably real world."

Levy compared his vision of the film to the tone of Will Ferrell's Elf, which had a sweet, earnest hero who clashed with his cynical surroundings. "I think the movie will be witty but never sarcastic," he says.

The film is being fast-tracked to begin production late next year, to be in theaters late »

Grint To Play Legendary British Ski-jumper

1 November 2009 3:06 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint is to replace Steve Coogan in a film about British ski-jump legend Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards.

The plasterer was the sole British applicant for the 1988 Winter Olympics ski-jumping competition and became the first competitor to represent Great Britain in the sport.

He became a national treasure despite his lack of success - finishing last in both of his events.

In 2007, Coogan was signed up to tackle the role of Edwards in a film depicting the comical athlete's Olympic journey.

But British newspaper the Sunday Mirror reports Grint will now take over from the Night At the Museum star.

The movie, directed by Declan Lowney, is scheduled to go into production later this year. »

Hugh Jackman Will Not Host Oscars Next Year

Disappointing news for everyone who enjoyed Hugh Jackman's performance as this past year's Oscar host: Variety confirms that the 41-year-old, Aussie star will not reprise the role next year. The upside is that even though Jackman won't be the main attraction when next year's award show broadcasts on March 7, he may host in the future.

For now, he's concentrating on completing his role in the Broadway show A Steady Rain, in which he stars opposite Daniel Craig. The show wraps up on December 6, at which point Jackman will begin preparations for his role as a boxer and promoter in the sci-fi action thriller Real Steel. The movie is being directed by Night at the Museum's Shawn Levy and takes place in a future where human fighters have been replaced by robots.
