Mister Lonely has some great, weird moments. It has some beautiful moments. The problem is, all of that is bogged down in a sea of sentimentality and, as odd as it is for a Korine film, normalcy. As a result, this film swings between fantastic and mediocre.
The film follows two different plot-lines, which thankfully don't converge in the least; one follows a commune of celebrity impersonators and the other focuses on nuns...that's all I'll say about that one so as not to ruin it for you all. The key to enjoying it is to separate yourself from the sappiness and focus on the way Korine wrings out such emotion from even the most bizarre images. The most poignant part to my mind is when the Stooges kill the sheep. So wacky, yet so effective that it nearly brought tears to my eyes. Keep an eye out for these moments, as you will be duly rewarded: many not only evoke the old Korine, but even reach a Tarkovsky-esquire level of transcendentalism, such as the scene with Little Red Riding Hood singing on the tracks or the nuns dancing in the rain.
But, as I said, there are also too many scenes of emo existentialism, more reminiscent of The Wrestler than anything else, or melodramatic scenes that feel more at home in a Sirk film than in a Korine one, despite the fact that the participants are dressed as Monroe and Chaplin. The whole first quarter of the film is disconcertingly straight-forward, so much so, in fact, that I was tempted to make sure I had put the right DVD in.
The true highlights of the film are almost entirely found in the nun narrative, a fable about the power of faith and the danger of arrogance, which features all-around badass Werner Herzog as a somewhat deranged Catholic priest in Central or South America. These segments are so weird, so utterly imaginative, that they almost make up for the lacking portions. The ending of this storyline, ironic yet nearly inevitable, is far and away the film's best scene.
The fact that Korine constructed a melancholy, pensive film about celebrity look-alikes is impressive in and of itself, so I give it a nine out of ten. Besides, I can't help liking a film that includes the line, "I'm Abe F-ckin' Lincoln."
