Protests Over Gibson's Mexican Movie

11 hours ago | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Mel Gibson's new movie is already causing controversy in Mexico - relatives of inmates at a Veracruz jail have blasted plans to move prisoners to make way for the film shoot.

The Hollywood actor-turned-director has set his sights on filming at the Ignacio Allende prison in the eastern coastal city.

Veracruz state governor, Fidel Herrera Beltran, announced earlier this month that prisoners would be moved out of the jail to allow the film crew to work there.

Authorities previously planned to transfer inmates to a new prison in the town next year - but families fear their loved ones will be sent to facilities across the country if the jail is not built in time.

Hundreds of family members launched demonstrations outside the prison on Monday in a bid to stop the transfers until the new unit is ready. The 24-hour protest reportedly came to an end on Tuesday after the prison's director announced he had received no orders to transfer inmates and vowed families would be informed if any prisoners are to be moved.

Gibson previously filmed his 2006 epic Apocalypto in Veracruz and subsequently handed local authorities a $1 million (£690,000) donation to help build new homes for victims of 2005's Hurricane Stan. »

Gibson will direct from the script by William Monahan.

The principals confirmed the project but would not divulge many details. DiCaprio, who has long been fascinated by Viking culture, will play one in a storyline that will be as unsparing as Gibson’s other period directing efforts, “Braveheart,” “The Passion of the Christ” and “Apocalypto.” [Variety]

“This will be an awe-inspiring story, created with some of the industry’s finest cinematic talent, and I am just over the moon to be making this film with Mel, Leo and Bill,” producer Graham King said in a statement.

Production is expected to begin in fall 2010.

DiCaprio just completed the Christopher Nolan-directed “Inception” and will next be seen in the Martin Scorsese-directed “Shutter Island.”

Leonardo DiCaprio, Viking Conquerer (Photos)

17 December 2009 10:02 AM, PST | Celebuzz.com | See recent Celebuzz news »

When you think rugged Viking warrior, you probably don't think Leonardo DiCaprio, but Mel Gibson has selected DiCaprio to star in his upcoming Nordic epic, which will begin shooting in the Fall of 2010.  If it's anything close to the likes of Gibson's Braveheart, Apocalypto, or Passion of the Christ, you can expect to see a half-naked Leo creating viking carnage with a bloody sword of freedom. We at Celebuzz were so excited about the prospect of "Leo Erikson, Nordic Conquerer", that we couldn't help but take an early whack at what the fair-haired DiCaprio might look like as a movie »

Gibson, DiCaprio Teaming for Viking Drama

17 December 2009 4:28 AM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Mel Gibson and Leonardo DiCaprio are teaming for an untitled period drama about Viking culture.  William Monahan (The Departed) is writing the script and will produce.

If the thought of that trio working together doesn’t excite you, imagine Leo swinging a massive axe while pillaging and wearing a horned helm in an epic Braveheart-style battle.  Or, since I don’t have a picture of that, here’s an image of a viking versus a shark to pique your interest.

Variety confirmed the story, but wasn’t able to get further details on where this epic viking tale is headed.  They did promise it “will be as unsparing as Gibson’s other period directing efforts.”  Might I suggest into the ocean?  Because Outlander meets Jaws sounds pretty great right now…

Gibson’s last directorial outing was in 2006 with Apocalypto.  He then took a hiatus from Hollywood following a drunken, »

Mel Gibson has announced two film projects within a week: a self-penned starring role in crime comedy How I Spent My Summer Vacation, and another stint in the director's chair for a norse epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio

Another day, another Mel Gibson project. The veteran actor and director is to star in How I Spent My Summer Vacation, based on his own script about a career criminal who learns to survive in a Mexican prison with the help of a nine-year-old boy.

Gibson usually likes to direct his own screenplays, but on this occasion he is passing the reins to Adrian Grunberg, who was first assistant director on the film-maker's most recent movie, Mayan tale Apocalypto. The movie was announced just a few days after it was revealed that Gibson's next directing project will be a film about Viking culture starring Leonardo DiCaprio. However, Variety reports it's another new project called How I Spent My Summer Vacation that Gibson will be starring in at a prison down in Mexico starting early next year. The film is about a career criminal who gets caught by Mexican authorities and is sent to a drug- and crime-filled prison, where he learns how to survive with the help of a 9-year-old boy. Gibson wrote the screenplay, but is not directing. Instead, Gibson is letting his first assistant director from Apocalypto, Adrian Grunberg, take over directing duties on How I Spent My Summer Vacation. Mel Gibson Spends His ‘Summer Vacation’

15 December 2009 5:20 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Just yesterday we informed you that Mel Gibson is headed back to the director’s chair to helm a new Viking film — and judging from your comments, that’s a less than exciting proposition.

This morning, karma has seen fit to deliver you a double whammy of Gibson — not only will he be directing the untitled Viking movie, but he’ll also be returning in an acting capacity in How I Spent My Summer Vacation, based on a screenplay that Gibson himself wrote for his Apocalypto team.

In a twist that seems to reflect how strangely Gibson’s mind works, the subject material of the film is less peppy than you’d think by reading the title:

“[The film] centers on a career criminal who gets caught by Mexican authorities and is sent to a drug- and crime-filled prison, where he learns how to survive with the help of a 9-year-old boy. »

Mel Gibson’s Prison Flick Update

15 December 2009 4:32 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

We only yesterday reported Mel Gibson’s Viking project with Leonardo DiCaprio, but news of his mysterious Mexico-set prison drama have surfaced via Variety. It has been announced Mel will be starring (and not directing) in How I Spent My Summer Vacation. If that sounds like a romantic comedy – it isn’t. It may have a disarming title, but the film is an action-drama, in which Gibson plays a criminal who is sent down and put away in a Mexican prison where he befriends a nine year-old boy. This sounds a little familiar to the man’s directorial debut, The Man Without A Face.

Production begins in March. In the past year and only last week, too, Gibson has been spotted in the Veracruz region of Mexico on a location recce. The film is shooting in a real prison. Adrian Grunberg, first A.D. on ‘Apocalypto’, is directing.

Ever since it was revealed last week that Mel Gibson will be shooting a new film next year, rumors have been spreading across the Internet as to what the film will actually be about, with many people suggesting that it may possibly be the story of Jesus Arriaga due to a location being revealed as Ignacio Allende prison in Mexico.

The film will be written by Oscar winner William Monahan, who adapted The Departed (starring DiCaprio) and Edge of Darkness (starring Gibson). Mel Gibson for How I Spent My Summer Vacation

Penned by Gibson, How I Spent My Summer Vacation will reassemble the key members of the same team who gave us Apocalypto; which was awesome. The film centers on a career criminal who gets caught by Mexican authorities and is sent to a drug- and crime-filled prison, where he learns how to survive with the help of a 9-year-old boy.

Summer Vacation is the third script written by Gibson, but the first that he won't direct. »

Mel Gibson's got a vacation lined up before his viking quest begins

15 December 2009 12:57 AM, PST | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Just one day after we learned that Mel Gibson was going to go viking, now we're told that he's also written a screenplay for an action flick called How I Spent My Summer Vacation. Mel plans to star in the film but he's not interested in directing it. Instead, it appears that he's doing some internal promoting: the first assistant director on Gibson's Apocalypto, Adrian Grunberg, will direct Vacation while Stacy Perskie, Apocalypto's second a.d., will produce the new movie.

That's cool of Mel to do that and give the people that worked for him their break to play in the big leagues. It is a little unusual for an A-list actor to be writing his own screenplay, but then the Mel Gibson of the 2000s is proving to be his own unique kind of man. I'm not trying to refer to his infamous brush with L.A. »
