Just like everyone else, film festivals have been hurting from the economic downturn. A piece of advice for all you ailing fests: give Tim League, co-founder of Fantastic Fest, a holler. Now in its fifth year League has created a monster of an event where I, the fan, am the most important person in the theater. You know you're doing something right when next year's VIP seats sell out in a matter of minutes which is exactly what happened earlier this week. You hear that? Sold out one year in advance! Aside from the typical horror genre they cover other stuff related to action, fantasy, sci-fi and anything else that falls under the moniker of "fantastic". You'll get your dose of blood and gore but the fest has surprised attendees with the world premieres of films like Apocalypto, There Will Be Blood, and Eagle Eye. And guests have included folks like Mel Gibson, »

Secret screenings are a much-loved signature event at Fantastic Fest. Every year, four to six of these events are scheduled, labeled only as "Secret Screening #1" and so forth. They're the grab bags of the film festival -- you don't know if you'll get a glimpse of a world premiere with the filmmaker present, or an obscure Asian movie that hasn't hit the U.S. yet, or a big Hollywood movie that a studio is probably trying to test before release.
In the past, Fantastic Fest secret screenings have included the world premiere of There Will Be Blood with Paul Thomas Anderson in attendance; Mel Gibson turning up with a work-in-progress version of Apocalypto; the first screening of the post-Cannes cut of Southland Tales, with Richard Kelly attending; and regional premieres of films that played earlier fests, like The Brothers Bloom and Persepolis. This year, Secret Screening #1 was Robogeisha, and #2 was »

In a little more than two weeks Fantastic Fest will be upon us. I've personally been looking forward to this since the moment SXSW 2009 came to a close, and the anticipation has only intensified. The lineup of genre films this year brings some very exciting dilemmas to the table since some of the films I want to see are playing on the same night and only screening once. Instead of sitting at home moping along to my favorite Morrissey songs, decisions must be made and priorities set. Here is the link to the films that will be featured in Fantastic Fest 2009. Fflogo For those of you that are unfamiliar of the badassery of Fantastic Fest, below is the official about statement: Fantastic Fest was founded in 2005 by Tim League (founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema) and Harry Knowles (founder of Ain’t It Cool News). Fantastic Fest is the largest genre film festival in the U. »

Ridley Scott and Leonardo DiCaprio will team up for an adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s 1931 novel “Brave New World.”
The novel has had numerous TV adaptations, but this will be its first outing on the big screen. Scott will direct from the script by Farhad Safinia (”Apocalypto”).
DiCaprio will play the main character in the story, Bernard.
The book takes place in the seemingly perfect 26th century world that has achieved harmony by tightly controlling birth, which takes place mainly in laboratories, and outlawing family. The society is split into five clearly-defined castes which determine height, intelligence and prospects.
Bernard is a member of a lower-caste and he is in love with Lenina. Things get complicated when “the leaders of the society find his behavior antisocial.”
DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way owns Huxley’s book. Scott and DiCaprio will also work as producers on the movie.
Production is expected »

Ridley Scott has finally shoved Brave New World from rumour status to official development - and Leonardo DiCaprio's likely along for the ride. After years of talking about how he wants to make a new adaptation of Aldous Huxley's famous futuristic novel, he hasn't had it set up anywhere. But now he has not only a studio - Universal - but a script in the works, and a producing partner/possible star in DiCaprio. Farhad Safinia, who wrote Apocalypto, has been hired to pen the screenplay, but that still means the project is a ways... .

There was something I intentionally left out of a recent article on Leonardo DiCaprio's quest to reconfigure Little Red Riding Hood, and now it's come back to bite me. Just earlier this week, I commented on how DiCaprio seems to have fallen in love with the concept of producing well-known material, like the live-action Akira that has been stopped in its tracks and a new Twilight Zone movie.
What I left out was Leo's interest in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, one of those books that might not turn into a good movie just because it's so hard to make it fit the mold of contemporary film. And because I hadn't heard anything about it in almost a year, I figured it was not happening anytime soon. But apparently, it's happening sooner than later.

We first heard rumours about a possible Ridley Scott adaptation [1] of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World over a year ago, after legal issues surrounding the Huxley estate had finally been settled and Universal managed to secure the rights. At the time, it was said that Leonardo DiCaprio also wanted to play the lead role in the film, but it was still far too early for any official announcements. Now, this week, we have an update on the project from The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz Blog [2], and it sounds like Scott and DiCaprio are both in it for the long haul as producers, although the full extent of their involvement still remains to be seen. The important thing is that the movie has taken its first step toward becoming a reality as writer Farhad Safinia (Apocalypto) has been hired to write the script. I certainly hope Ridley Scott decides to direct this himself, »

Leonardo DiCaprio and Ridley Scott are embarking on an adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World” for Universal. Both are linked as producers with the possibility of DiCaprio starring and Scott directing.
Though Ridley Scott has not announced his next film, he signed to direct an Alien prequel with Fox last week while still completing his Robin Hood movie starring Russell Crowe. Meanwhile, the studio has hired Apocalypto screenwriter Farhad Safinia to write the script.
Published in 1932, Huxley’s novel warned of a “utopia” that controlled human births, outlawed family, and segmented the population into a strict caste system. The book has never made it to the big screen, but has translated into a few television versions.
Appian Way, DiCaprio’s banner, owned the rights and allowed Scott, who is a fan of the science fiction story, to come aboard as a return to dystopian material after Scott’s sc-fi classic Blade Runner. »

It is back to the future for director Ridley Scott, who is developing a film based on the 1931 Aldous Huxley classic “Brave New World”. The film will star Leonardo DiCaprio. The project is in the early stages with “Apocalypto” screenwriter Farhad Safinia working to adapt Huxley’s novel. Appian Way owns the rights to the novel and will produce along with DiCaprio and Scott. The story takes place in the 26th Century where families no longer exist and children are produced in laboratories designed to fit into a world that is divided into castes. The novel was referred to quite a bit when In vitro fertilization techniques first became viable. The concept of "test tube" babies has often been associated with Brave New World’s sterile baby making environments where human beings have been removed from the process of procreation. Huxley’s Brave New World is a society patterned on the Ford Motor Company assembly line. The »

Is it intervention time for Ridley Scott? The man is helming the still-untitled "Robin Hood" adventure and he already has plans to direct the "Alien" prequel and a "Monopoly" adaptation as well. Today, the director is ramping up yet another project, making Scott either a brave new director or a shameless workaholic.
However you want to describe him, Scott is nonetheless throwing himself towards "Brave New World," based on the classic Aldous Huxley novel of the same name. Scott's been attached to the film for quite awhile, but today brings word from The Hollywood Reporter that Leonardo DiCaprio is joining the fray as a producer with an eye for a starring role. "Apocalypto" writer Farhad Safinia is set to pen the script.
The story of "Brave New World" focuses on a dystopian future in which the populace is governed by The World State, a unifying global society. Human beings are genetically engineered, »

It was recently announced (to much fan excitement) that Ridley Scott will be directing the upcoming Alien prequel, instead of the previously reported Scott protege, Carl Rinsch. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll be seeing that Alien prequel anytime soon.
Today THR’s Risky Biz Blog is reporting that Universal has set up an adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s classic 1931 science fiction novel, Brave New World, for Scott to produce (through Scott Free) and possibly direct. Leonardo DiCaprio is apparently also going to produce (through his Appian Way) and is suppossed eyeing a starring role in the film as well.
Could we see Brave New World before we see Scott’s Alien prequel? The project has been gestating for a while now, and already has Apocalypto co-writer Farhad Safinia on-board to pen the script. He is expected to start working on it shortly.

Every time I walk into Barnes and Noble I see Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" front and center and knowing it is a highly respected piece of literature that is about to be turned into a feature film adaptation I can't help but think I should be picking it up to read it as soon as humanly possible. Of course, my time for reading is damn near zero as I have more books I have started and not yet finished than I can even count, it's unfortunate, but true. However, that doesn't mean others aren't doing the reading as Ridley Scott and Leonardo DiCaprio have joined forces to produce a film adaptation of Huxley's dystopian work with an eye to direct and star respectively. Scott, who was recently attached to direct a prequel film to his 1979 sci-fi classic Alien, was first attached to Brave New World for Universal back »

Ridley Scott is now attached to direct a feature film version of Aldoux Huxley's science fiction novel Brave New World. Leonardo DiCaprio is also attached to star in the film. Both of the mens' production companies, those being Scott's Scott Free Productions and DiCaprio's Appian Way, are developing the project in tandem. Both men will receive producers credits if this incarnation of the movie actually gets made at Universal, the studio where it's set up at.
DiCaprio's been linked to star in a new version of Brave New World for months ever since he mentioned that his company has the rights to the property. This is the first mention of Scott's involvement but not the first time the pair have hooked up; that would be last year's tepid thriller Body of Lies. They've hired screenwriter Farhad Safinia (Apocalypto) to write the screenplay and he's getting started on it.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Ridley Scott are apparently gearing up for a new take on Brave New World, the dystopian Aldous Huxley science fiction novel of 1931, which gives us the always-welcome opportunity to make our headline a Shakespearean misquote. We're well cultured, we are.The Huxley novel is one that Scott's been talking about for years, and he's now producing the project at Universal, along with DiCaprio's Appian Way. They've got Apocalypto screenwriter Farhad Safinia lined up to adapt the book, something which has proved problematic in the past. One of those sci-fi stories more focused on satire and world-building than plot-telling, Brave New World is set 500 years in the future, where humans are artificially bred into castes, which determine their intelligence, height and social prospects. They are dependent on a drug called soma and sexually promiscuous, although love and family are socially taboo. The novel's protagonist, Bernard, is an Alpha »
