Opening to the Coen bros.' script for A Serious Man

Photo: Focus Features Do you have an opinion on what scripts should take home the awards for Best Original and Best Adapted Screenplays at the 2010 Oscars? Well, if not you may want to begin by reading a few yourself as I have once again updated the online script database for this year's contenders as more and more For Your Consideration sites open up their doors.

Today I have added nine new scripts as Focus, Lionsgate, Warner Bros. and Overture have brought their award sites online.

If you are interested, the Focus Features site is incredibly involved and quite fancy. It features not only the scripts for A Serious Man, 9, Coraline and Sin Nombre but also the complete scores/soundtracks in 192kbps .MP3 quality. Carter Burwell's score for A Serious Man is worth the visit alone. Warner Bros. also »

For your consideration … a new featurette from ‘Avatar‘ - the hugely anticipated movie which finally arrives in theaters on December 18th, 2009 after 14+ years of development and 4+ years of production from James Cameron - the director behind mega-projects like ‘Titanic,’ & ‘Terminator.’

Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) in James Cameron's Avatar.

The Avatar trailers have been released like movies on their own with line-ups, reviews and anticipation as the renegade filmmaker waited for the technology catch up with his vision as he worked to push the boundaries of how films are made in the digital age.

Now you can explore the back story with an Avatar featurette. You’ll hear director James Cameron and actors Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Joel David Moore, Matt Gerald, Zoe Saldana and Dileep Rao talk about Avatar.

The Good, The Bad And The Wtf: Sands of Not My Freakin' Dime

4 November 2009 1:09 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

It's the mid-week report of the good, bad and you-know-what-the-what here, as we compile the movie news from the past week and a half. Yes, you'll have more at the end of the week—but for now, let us all cringe together as we see stomach news of the 2012 motion sickness experience, an Mib without Will Smith, and the audacity of some people to shoot a barely visible topless scene and hype it up like it was Basic Instinct 3.

The Good

• For years, there have been several attempts to do a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, none of them ever came close to moving ahead. Speaking to MTV last week, director Robert Zemeckis set the record straight: that this time he is personally involved and really excited to do the sequel, and that he has commissioned original scribes Jeffrey Price and Peter Seaman to write the screenplay. A Serious Man Officially Kicks Off Oscar Season with First “For Your Consideration” Ad

3 November 2009 11:54 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

After deciding that “Yo, Give Us an Oscar” was a bad way to kick-start an awards marketing campaign for a film, studios went with what are known as “For Your Consideration” ads which usually appear in the print versions of “Variety” and “The Hollywood Reporter”.  I always find it interesting to see which films think they’re good enough for an Oscar and which ones are completely delusional.  However, the first one out the gate, “A Serious Man” is already a strong contender.  And while this ad may not have the words “For Your Consideration” stamped across the top, we’ll be seeing those ads soon enough.  Seriously.

Hit the jump to check out the ad and we’ll be bringing you more of the standouts as award season heats up.

AwardsDaily has the market cornered on collecting these and we’ll be sure to always credit them as we »

For Your Consideration - Sam Rockwell for Best Actor in Moon

22 October 2009 8:18 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The Academy can–and often does–neglect obvious choices in the major Oscar categories.  Studios throw their weight behind certain films and actors and it usually turns out that the biggest marketing budget wins.  Then there’s the obstacle of how the Academy turns away from performances in genre films in favor of hot actresses going ugly or actors doing a perfect impression of a recently deceased legend.  Throw all this together and it looks like the people are going to have to rally if Sam Rockwell is going to get the Oscar nomination he deserves for his performance in Duncan Jones’ “Moon”.  Hit the jump to find out how you can support a worthy cause.

We join our brothers at /Film in the campaign to get Mr. Rockwell an Oscar nomination.  If you know an Academy member, let them know but do so with some subtlety.  For example, if someone says, »

And the Next 'Star Trek' Movie Villain Is...

18 October 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Everybody's asking the question: "Who's going to serve as the villain or villains in the sequel to last summer's Star Trek?" Now that we're in an alternate Trek timeline, writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are free to tell stories that incorporate familiar faces but combine them in new and interesting ways.

Which got us thinking: who's likely to make the short list, and what sort of possible stories/combinations might we see? Will the filmmakers choose to go the route of borrowing once more from canon...or will they elect to craft an entirely new story with entirely new antagonists?

Since new antagonists are impossible to predict, we decided to look to the original canon and have offered a list of possible villains from which Orci and Kurtzman could choose. We've divided the categories up into four groups:

The Heavy Hitters

The Middleweight Contenders

The Individual Narcissists

Catherine O'Hara Talks About Where the Wild Things Are

15 October 2009 5:48 AM, PDT | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

Catherine O'Hara (Away We Go, For Your Consideration) says she absolutely loved Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are and admits that prior to being involved in the film version, she couldn't imagine how it would ever be made into a movie. After all, Sendak's short children's story is only 48 pages long (in hardcover) and doesn't obviously lend itself to becoming a full-length feature film. But now that she's worked on the film and seen how co-writers Spike Jonze and Dave Eggers handled the source material's transition to the big screen, O'Hara says she believes they captured the spirit of Sendak's work with their adaptation. Mad Men and 30 Rock Win Emmys Again for Best Drama and Best Comedy So No One Will Be Upset

20 September 2009 8:34 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Imagine if the same six or seven movies and their actors, writers, directors, etc. kept getting nominated for Oscars every year.  There would be slight deviations but for the most part, Academy members would just take their ballot from last year, peruse a couple of For Your Consideration ads, maybe read a critic’s list or two as a second source to make sure they weren’t making any selection deemed interesting, and you’d wonder if they just showed a repeat except they somehow replaced Jon Stewart with Hugh Jackman.

“TV’s Finest Night” is always a repeat and you cherish just about anyone who hasn’t won an Emmy in the past no matter the quality of the show.  Yes, “Mad Men” and “30 Rock” are excellent shows but barring a steep decline in quality, I already know who’s going to win next year because the Emmys are »

Wailers and Wannabes: A Lexicon of Eddie Vedder Sound-Alikes

18 September 2009 6:15 AM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Eddie Vedder's back-of-the-throat singing voice is something like a hybrid between a goat-man, Jim Morrison and a Wookie. In other words, it's really hard to find the right words to do justice to his oh-so-masculine tremolo. It's one of those things that's easier to just sing (or draw) than describe. And if you turned a radio on at any point during the '90s, you're probably well aware of the fact that many artists staked their livelihood on imitating Vedder's style. For your consideration, then, a collection of vocalists who try to sound like Eddie Vedder, rated on a one-to-four scale of Vedder's vintage flannel shirts: »

Kathy Griffin Baits Grammy Voters With Second Comedy Album

31 August 2009 11:19 PM, PDT | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

Kathy Griffin is on the prowl for another Grammy nomination. She just released her second comedy album, "Suckin' It For the Holidays."

She released her first comedy album, "For Your Consideration," last year and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album. The late George Carlin took home the award for his final album, "It's Bad For Ya."

Griffin releases her album just days before the cut-off for Grammy nominations. There's something her and oft-mocked in her routine Whitney Houston have in common.

In "Suckin' It For the Holidays," Griffin takes about her wine-loving mother Maggie, meeting the target of many of her jokes Gayle King, and the women of Bravo's "Real Housewives." The album, which has a holiday-themed title and album cover but little reference to the holidays except the first track, is available at iTunes, AmazonMP3, and other digital outlets now.

Buy Those Oscar Ads Wisely

31 August 2009 5:56 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Dea Lawrence

When Hollywood was a two-paper town, “For Your Consideration” advertising options during awards season were split between Variety and the Hollywood Reporter, with Variety taking market-share. Online advertising was still young, and marketers clamored for print believing it was the best vehicle to reach the coveted eyeballs of the voting community.   The metrics for print advertising success are simple and straightforward: delivery and visibility. Did the award issue get into the hands of an academy or union member? And did Kevin Bacon come ... »

Poltergeist Remake Gets A Release Date

13 August 2009 12:14 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Shock Till You Drop is reporting that the remake of Tobe Hooper’s classic 1982 ghost film, Poltergeist, has been set a release date of November 24th, 2010 (Thanksgiving weekend in the U.S.). We’re still in the dark as far as a cast or production start date, but now we know when MGM is planning to release the remake.

The original Poltergeist was directed by Hooper and co-written, produced and overseen by Steven Spielberg. The film is about a family who were haunted in their house (which was built on an Indian burial ground) by ghosts that end up “kidnapping” the young daughter of the family. As stated, there’s not many details on the remake, including how close it will follow the original’s story. My guess is that in the vein of, for example, the horrible Amityville Horror remake, the story won’t change that drastically.

Review of German casual serial killer drama Distanz

28 July 2009 1:16 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Year: 2009

Directors: Thomas Sieben

Writers: Thomas Sieben & Christian Lyre

IMDb: link

Trailer: link

Review by: projectcyclops

Rating: 6 out of 10

Thomas Sieben's Distanz is a curious, stylish and enigmatic little film, about a quiet gardener called Daniel Bauer, who can't seem to shake the nasty habit he has for casual murder in his local park. The film begins with a montage of Bauer's daily routine at the botanical gardens where he works, we see him raking leaves and hosing down his tools, before heading to the park after work to lie in the sun and enjoy some peace, away from his demanding boss and the pretty secretary who makes eyes at him. Later that night he plays games on the bridge over a motorway, dropping stones onto the cars that pass below, which is our first hint that he's anything other than a shy loner.

Thing is, Bauer isn't a happy person. »

John Wayne Rides Again…in a Direct-to-dvd Sci-Fi Western

11 July 2009 7:16 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Few actors in Hollywood history have achieved as mythic a status in our collective conscience as John Wayne. Remembered as the paragon of rugged American masculinity, Wayne traded blows with everyone from old west outlaws to Nazis. Of course, for all of his many legendary roles, John Wayne never crossed into the world of science-fiction. Now, however, thirty years after his death, it appears we will finally get to see the Duke in a sci-fi role.

According to a story on The Houston Chronicle website, John Wayne’s final unreleased performance will be seen in an upcoming DVD entitled, Thunder Riders of the Golden West. The film, which was independently produced by Dave Burleson (Wayne’s stunt double and longtime friend), focuses on “cowboy truckers who hit the trail in search of $3 million worth of gold in the middle of an atomic bomb test.”

Breaking Oscar News: Best Picture Nominee List Expanded

24 June 2009 1:28 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

In a surprising bit of news, it has been announced by the 82nd Academy Awards that the Best Picture nominees list for next year will change from the standard five to a whopping ten! That means double the amount of movies can have the term “Best Picture Nominee” on their posters and DVD covers - and the question of who will win that coveted top prize will be even more up in the air than it usually is.

Great.

At a press conference today to announce and explain the decision, Academy Executive Producer Sid Ganis said the following:

“After more than six decades, the Academy is returning to some of its earlier roots, when a wider field competed for the top award of the year,” said Ganis. “The final outcome, of course, will be the same - one Best Picture winner - but the race to the finish line will feature 10, not just five, »
