Best Dutch movie in a long time

When I first heard about this film, and who was going to be in it, I immediately felt a buzz of excitement. Finally a Dutch production that might actually have the potential to become a blockbuster! When I saw the trailer I knew that this buzz had been right, and that this was a movie that I was not going to miss for the world.

So at the earliest possible convenience, namely yesterday, I went to the cinema and sat down with expectations raised sky-high...and I wasn't disappointed. It's the Dutch Love Actually, and at the same time it's not. Although it does have obvious similarities, like the different story lines that develop aside from each other, and at times become intertwined, the types of relationships and relational problems are not the same, or at least presented differently. Kim van Kooten clearly took a good look at the British story, but she didn't copy it. Instead, she let it inspire her to write a more than worthy Dutch response to it.

This movie will make you laugh out loud, and maybe shed an occasional tear, exactly as a romantic comedy is supposed to. But it will also give you a little something extra. A spark, say, or maybe the "X-factor", if you like that term. One of the reasons for this I think is the beautifully written script which has some great lines in it, from which at least one is bound to stick with you for the next few months, years, or even the rest of your life.

In my opinion, this movie can meet the standards of any Hollywood or British romcom, and that doesn't happen at all too often with Dutch movies. Grab the opportunity, and go see it. You won't regret it.
