In the Italian trenches of a First World War a young lieutenant Ranieri is asking his Sargent Roccco Parri to write another letter to countess Albertina Regis. Rocco agrees to write once again instead of Ranieri, but only because lieutenant said it will be the last one. Soon after Lieutenant dies in a attack and Rocco sends the letter. The young countess who never saw the lieutenant, after receiving the massage of his death decides to go to the front and become a nurse.
On a leave Rocco returns to a picturesque mountain village where Anita a ten year old orphan girl a daughter of a prostitute is living in brothel. He likes Anita very much and he wants to teach her how to read and write. During his stay a young countess arrives but the conditions of the hospital and the lack of morphine wears her down quickly. On the bench behind the hospital she meets Rocco who tries to console her, but is interrupted by a captain a friend of countesses father. Only when captain ask the countess how she feels,Rocco realizes that she was the one to whom he was writing to. Undoubtetly the two peace movie had it's ups and downs. The first movie was very slow, romantic easy to watch. The second was more about the destruction, suffering and basically at the end at some times very hard to see. The romance between Rocco and Albertina was the best thing in the movie. The scene where in the first movie countess plays her piano and laughs while at the same time Lieutenant Ranieri charges from the trench and dies is best one. The second movie has some really unbelievable plot line. For example while on the run from captivity Rocco and two of his friends jump from a cliff and they all survive. Aldo one of them was wounded in the foot before he became a POW, he survives the very hard journey to freedom without getting a gangrene or having his leg cut out. Also the only mentionable love making scene was to long, and it resembled to much of Kelly McGilllis nude scene from Witness but not in a good way. Over all if you like love, romance, intrigue, threats, deceit and a bit of a thriller than this is a movie for you. Danielle Liotti was more laid back in this one, and he seemed to enjoy making this romantic saga.
