Tobey Maguire Is Going To Be On ‘Jeopardy’

16 December 2009 7:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Or, more precisely, he’ll be making a movie about a man on the long-running game show. The story, written by William Wheeler (who also penned The Hoax), is based on a true story called “Prisoners of Trebek.” The plot is supposedly about Maguire’s character who spends time trying to master Jeopardy, falls in love, and experiences some “Charlie Kaufman-esque elements.”

Maguire’s production company, Maguire Entertainment, is producing along with Mark Gordon (who has produced films such as 2012 and Saving Private Ryan). The production is still looking for a director, and with the schedule Maguire currently has — soon to be shooting Spider-Man 4, The Details and Gary RossThe Crusaders — it might be some time before he can fit this film in so they probably have time to find a director.

One comment I read recently about this film mentioned something I thought would be hilarious casting: Will Ferrell as Alex Trebek. »

Tobey Maguire to Star in Prisoners Of Trebek

14 December 2009 1:18 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Pajiba is reporting that Tobey Maguire is developing and planning to star in Prisoners of Trebek.   The film will be an adaptation of the book, Prisoner of Trebekistan: A Decade in Jeopardy! , which tells the true story of stand-up comedian Bob Harris who tried to master Jeopardy, but instead found himself and fell in love.   There is no director currently attached to the project but William Wheeler (The Hoax) has written the script, which is said to have elements of a Charlie Kaufman film.   I’m going to assume that this means that the film will be a little bit eccentric.  However, we may not see this film anytime soon since Maguire will be busy next year filming Spider-Man 4 and there is also the rumor that he might be heading over to the Shire once he’s done web-slinging around New York.

Tobey Maguire to Star in 'Prisoners of Trebek' Jeopardy Film

14 December 2009 11:17 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Now this just sounds like it could be good. Pajiba is reporting that Tobey Maguire has been cast in a new film called Prisoners of Trebek that Maguire Entertainment is developing for 20th Century Fox. The film is about a man who attempts to master Jeopardy (hosted by Alex Trebek), but ultimately finds himself and falls in love. It's based on a true story with a script written by William Wheeler (The Prime Gig, The Hoax). They don't know too much else about this, except that "it will be a heartstring-playing pic with elements of a Charlie Kaufman film." I'm in! See what I mean about how this sounds like it could be pretty damn good? No director is attached yet. Producer Mark Gordon (The Hoax, The Messenger, 2012) is currently searching and wants an A-list director. It sounds like we won't exactly see this next year, but if they find »

Tobey Maguire's Next Role: 'Prisoners of Trebek' or Bilbo in 'The Hobbit'?

14 December 2009 11:15 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In the tradition of great movies based on real game shows (Quiz Show; Slumdog Millionaire), Tobey Maguire is said to be producing and starring in a film called Prisoners of Trebek, based on a true story about a guy who found romance while attempting to master Jeopardy. Pajiba has the exclusive scoop on the project, which was scripted by The Hoax screenwriter William Wheeler and is being likened to the work of Charlie Kaufman. Producing with Maguire's company is Mark Gordon, who worked with Wheeler on The Hoax and regularly collaborates with Roland Emmerich (2012; The Day After Tomorrow).

The Kaufman connection could mean we should expect Alex Trebek to show up as himself in a surreal sort of comedy akin to Being John Malkovich. Or, Trebek could be more similar to Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, which also went behind the scenes of a game show in its biographical portrait »

Sam Worthington to Replace Tom Cruise in ‘The Tourist’

4 August 2009 2:32 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Hollywood's latest it man, Sam Worthington, has shown little acting chops to date. Sure, he co-headlined Terminator Salvation with Christian Bale earlier this summer, but that isn't saying much -- even Bale had an off-movie on that one. And sure, he's James Cameron's pick of the litter to lead the soon-to-be-mega sci-fi epic Avatar, but that's not out yet. Despite all that, Worthington continues to score big roles. He's top-lining the upcoming remake of Clash of the Titans, and now he'll be replacing Tom Cruise in the lead role in Bharat Nalluri's The Tourist. Worthington will star alongside Charlize Theron as a man chosen by a female interpol agent to act as bait for a wanted criminal in France. The film is based on a 2005 French film called Anthony Zimmer, directed by Jerome Salle. The American screenplay was written by Julian Fellows (Gosford Park), William Wheeler (The Hoax) and Chris McQuarrie (The Usual Suspect, Valkyrie »

17 June 2009 10:30 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

It’s been nearly a decade since moviegoers were treated to a John Carpenter flick, but that drought looks to be coming to an end as the legendary master of horror is busy casting his latest project, The Ward. Danielle Panabaker, who recently ran for her life in the new Friday the 13th, and Mamie Gummer, who’s had roles in Stop Loss, The Hoax and Ang Lee’s upcoming Taking Woodstock, have both signed on to the psychological horror thriller that stars Amber Heard (Pineapple Express). The story follows a girl (Heard) who is admitted to a psychiatric ward. There she meets other girls with distinct personalities and discovers a mysterious girl haunting the halls at night. Panabaker plays a patient in the institution, a snobbish girl who flirts with orderlies and faces electroshock therapy. Gummer will also play a patient.
