November 25: DVD alternatives to this weekend’s multiplex offerings

25 November 2009 3:33 PM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

We know how it is: You’d like to go to the movies this long holiday weekend, but you won’t be able to move off the sofa after all that turkey, plus: football! But you can have a multiplex-like experience at home with a collection of the right DVDs. And when someone asks you on Monday, “Hey, did you see Old Dogs this weekend?” you can reply, “No, I watched a bunch of other dads-suck movies that came before.” Instead Of: Old Dogs, in which John Travolta and Robin Williams get unexpectedly saddled with seven-year-old twins and go on to demonstrate what awful parental figures they are... Watch: Wild Hogs (2007), in which a bunch of suburban dads escape their terrible lives of 5,000-square-foot McMansions and mass consumerism by riding off into a motorcycle sitcom; Dogs seems keyed to appeal to the same audience, down to same star (Travolta) and »

Jason Lee Turns Director For Get Back

18 November 2009 11:56 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The cancellation of My Name is Earl doesn't seem to have slowed Jason Lee down. He's just finished filming Kevin Pollak's Columbus Circle, and his old mucker Kevin Smith's A Couple of Dicks (not to mention Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel). He's got a live-action skateboarding comedy series in the works for Adult Swim (the Cartoon Network's grown-up half). And he's set to make his directorial debut with Get Back.Get Back is a time travelling adventure about two music obsessives transported to the 1960s, where one of them gets into a love triangle with John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Matt Berenson, whose CV isn't the most impressive, it must be said (Daddy Day Care, Daddy Day Camp) is producing. It's not quite clear whether Lee will also star as one of the two timewarping musos, but we'd imagine that the probability is high.Lee's affable »

Justin Theroux To Write ‘Space Invader’ Rom-Com

18 November 2009 8:33 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Today we get yet another piece of news that another classic video game is being adapted… Okay, that’s not true, but I couldn’t resist…

Actually, this isn’t news that the classic arcade game, Space Invaders, is being brought to the big-screen – it’s actually the announcement that actor-turned-screenwriter, Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder, Iron Man 2), is on board to write a romantic comedy called Space Invader (no affiliation with the video game), with Will Arnett attached to headline.

It’s okay, you’re forgiven for assuming the worst …

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Theroux has been brought on board to pen Space Invader, which he also might direct. The film is a romantic-comedy set up at Fox, and has Arnett attached to star as a man who decides to go to space after he suspects that his long-time girlfriend, an astronaut, is cheating on him with another space-walker. »

Kathleen Kennedy & Frank Marshall Remaking Fathers and Guns

10 November 2009 3:49 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

This sounds like one of those terribly unfunny Hollywood comedies like Daddy Day Camp or Old Dogs. But knowing that producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall (of Indiana Jones) are behind this, I actually think it might be good. THR announces that Kennedy and Marshall are remaking Fathers and Guns, a French-Canadian film that beat out Bruno at the box office when it was released in Quebec this year. The film is an action-comedy about two cops, father and son, who can't stand each other. They are assigned to an investigation to infiltrate an outdoor adventure group-therapy camp for fathers and sons. Sony Pictures has picked up the remake rights with Kennedy and Marshall attached. They don't have a writer or director yet for the remake, however the writer and director of the original, Emile Gaudreault, will also produce. "Fathers and Guns is a fantastically funny film, and we're excited »

Rotten Tomatoes Picks the Worst Movies of the Decade

25 September 2009 12:27 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

When it comes to reviewing movies, I've always found that one of the most difficult things is not deciding whether a movie is good or bad, but rather, deciding whether a movie is bad or downright terrible. Make no mistake, there are many different levels of bad movies, but does anyone really care to get down to the nitty gritty of debating which ones are slightly better than others? It just seems like a colossal waste of energy. Fortunately, the good folks over at Rotten Tomatoes [1] have recently decided to sift through their vast review archives to give us the definitive Worst of the Worst list [2] for the past 10 years in film. I don't think there are too many surprises here, although the good news is that I think quite a few of these are movies that no one has seen. Maybe now they'll finally find the audience they deserve! »

Fantasia '09: Best Worst Movie (Film Review)

31 July 2009 11:08 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

What’s the difference between a typical bad movie and a Best Worst Movie? That’s the question explored by Michael Stephenson’s highly entertaining new documentary, in which he examines the experience of being part of Troll 2—both during its shooting and in the wake of its years-later cult rediscovery. Having just played Montreal’s Fantasia Festival , Best Worst has its New York premiere tonight in Brooklyn courtesy of Rooftop Films.

Directed and written by husband-and-wife Italian filmmakers Claudio Fragasso and Rossella Drudi respectively (both credited on screen as “Drako Floyd”), Troll 2 didn’t make much of a ripple when it first hit U.S. video in 1992, and the few scathing reviews it did receive (including my own for The Motion Picture Guide, later migrated to TVGuide.com; click here if you’d like to check it out) didn’t appreciate its unique, mind-boggling and attention-grabbing weirdness. »

The Smurfs Movie Going 3D

29 June 2009 8:17 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

The live-action/CGI Smurfs movie is going to follow the path blazed by G-Force and be made in 3D. ComingSoon.net reports Columbia Pictures has made the decision and will roll out the film currently in pre-production on December 17, 2010. Though The Smurfs movie is well over a year away and the cartoon a distant memory, Smurfs merchandise continues to be sold in stores. While perusing one of the young kids' toy aisles with my daughter recently I spotted several Smurfs figures, playsets and whatnot. She had no interest in them and I could not have been more proud of her. The Smurfs film is being directed by Colin Brady based on a script by the writing duo David Stem and David Weiss who collaborated on Shrek 2 and Daddy Day Camp. »

Not-So-Terrific Trailers: Aliens in the Attic

24 May 2009 4:03 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

So after Scott busted out with the classic trailer for the classic Alien, I thought it might be high time for something a little more low-brow and modern. Enter Aliens in the Attic (formerly They Came From Upstairs), a positively shrill-looking summer comedy in which a handful of kids must prevent a handful of extraterrestrials from dominating the world beyond their homestead...

Okay, so there's a premise there worthy of an '80s-family-adventure throwback, but clearly, priority one for the co-producer of Daddy Day Camp and the director of The Honeymooners here was having a break-dancing Hollister hand-me-down take on a kung-fu-fighting Doris Roberts.

Now I've got your attention, huh?

I'm not sure what else to say about that scene until you watch it for yourself, and even then, I'm not sure that words can do it justice. I mean, thank goodness they bothered to make it Just Like A »

Summer, the Season of Free Outdoor Movies

5 May 2009 7:33 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The city where I live, Portland, Oregon, is known for being rainy. Like, ten months out of the year. So when July and August arrive the town goes a little crazy.

It's as if no one's ever seen sun before. The citizens madly scurry about like hyperkinetic beavers, painting their houses, filling potholes, constructing new buildings, and generally creating noise and congestion everywhere. Not a weekend goes by without some major thoroughfare being shut down for a parade, a walk to benefit a popular disease, a "fun run" (two words that just don't go together in my mind), a street fair, or a multicultural hoe-down featuring local blues bands and patchouli-scented hippies on bicycles.

In other words, summer here sucks.

There's one shining exception, though: Summer means free movies. It's become quite the vogue, in Portland and elsewhere, to project films out-of-doors, and each year my city is awash in free open-air screenings. »

Casting Bites: Brides, Crazies, and 'Up in the Air'

12 March 2009 10:03 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Hump day is behind us, the weekend is in sight, and here are some casting bites, courtesy of Variety:

We're still waiting to see when on earth The Garden of Eden will hit screens (some, like me, more impatiently than others), but meanwhile, Mena Suvari has picked up a new gig. She (along with Ken Davitian, Kevin Dunn, and Tia Carrere) is joining a new indie project called You May Not Kiss the Bride. The film is said to be a mixture of romance and action (a la Romancing the Stone). IMDb, under the name Wedlocked, says it's about a mobster trying to get his daughter Us citizenship by marrying her off to an American photographer. Unfortunately, director and screenwriter Rob Hedden's credits probably won't help you figure out the film's tone. He's responsible not only for Clockstoppers, but also Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. Oh, »

Ashton Kutcher gears up for 'Traded'

18 February 2009 11:36 AM, PST | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Ashton Kutcher goes all sporty and "Freaky Friday" on us.

The actor is in talks to star in Paramount's upcoming sports comedy "Traded," according to Variety.

The story follows a popular NFL quarterback who magically trades bodies with a 12-year-old middle school geek.

Um, how many times has this been done before? Anyway, David Stem and David Weiss, whose credits include "Daddy Day Camp" and "Are We There Yet?," wrote the screenplay.

Kutcher most recently starred alongside Cameron Diaz in "What Happens in Vegas." He also has a bunch of other projects in development, including ""Five Killers," "Like Father" and "American Neurotic." »

Coming to America 2?

18 February 2009 1:24 AM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

There are plenty of unnecessary sequels to Eddie Murphy movies. Nutty Professor 2. Beverly Hills Cop 2. Daddy Day Camp. The list could go on and on. And now you can add to that list Coming To America 2. Before we get into analyzing what a ridiculous idea this is, let me first explain. Alcon Entertainment is developing Back To America, a comedy that would star Martin Lawrence as a working class guy from Queens who discovers he is the heir to the throne of an African country and he... »
