Summit Reinvigorates Weitz Into Making More Films

22 November 2009 10:05 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Two weeks ago, I got to talk with Melissa Rosenberg, the screenwriter beyond Twilight and New Moon who had a lot of positive things to say about Summit and the way they do business. Apparently they make movies instead of talk about making them, give their talent a lot of room to grow, and offer freedoms that most other studios don't. Which probably explains why they are growing (even if most of that growth comes on the backs of a brooding vampire and his anti-feminist love interest). But Neil Miller will be glad to know that Chris Weitz, director of New Moon, has decided not to quit filmmaking and instead, according to Variety, will be making more movies after his next with Summit. In that next project, he'll be tackling the story of an immigrant worker trying to raise a son with Gardner. The money quote here: There are no werewolves or vampires, just »

Trailer Hints Extraordinary Measures

11 November 2009 11:03 PM, PST | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

There are two things that really trouble me about Extraordinary Measures. Don't get me wrong, I want to like the film, but when it feels the necessity to mention two other films in order to give you an idea of the genre in which it resides, it comes off desperate. Add the fact that the film claims to find "inspiration" from a true story, but is not the whole definition of the true story of which it is based off. That troubles me some.

Will Smith Gets Flowers

11 November 2009 3:00 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

It looks like >Will Smith is on the awards war path again, and is reportedly looking to reunite a third time with The Pursuit of Happyness director Gabriele Muccino for an adaptation of the classic text Flowers for Algernon.

The book, which originated as a short story in the late '50s, has been made into a film called Charly in 1968, starring Cliff Robertson and Claire Bloom .

The story is a fairly sci-fi in a lot of ways - researchers have come up with a way to increase the intelligence of test subjects, with the titular Algernon, the mouse who first displays effects of their developments.

The story is however much more than a futuristic experiment - the dramatic change of the human test subject protagonist Charlie is such that he goes from being mentally disabled to intellectually unmatchable - but becomes aware that he is set to degenerate back »

Will Smith to Bring ‘Flowers for Algernon’

10 November 2009 5:07 PM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

There’s no doubt that Will Smith is one of Hollywood’s biggest  power players: he’s one of Tinseltown’s highest paid actors, and if his name is put on a project, chances are pretty good that film is going to do well at the box office.

However, Smith is not one to rest on his laurels and go for easy roles just to bring in the cash. Instead, he’s ever pushing himself forward as an actor, working to expand his repertoire and make his name receive equal accolades for both his comedic and serious work.

His next role will certainly require him to take his acting to the next level.

Smith has signed on with Sony Pictures to produce and star in a modern-day adaptation of Daniel Keyes’s novel Flowers for Algernon. Now, I’m going to have to step aside from the movie part of »

Will Smith's Latest Tearjerker Is...

10 November 2009 3:56 PM, PST | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

It's not too hard to pick up on Will Smith's acting pattern. Usually he'll star in some big-budgeted affair, and then follow that up with a smaller, awards-type movie. Sometimes he'll wedge a comedy in between, though Smith tends to like two kinds of movies: really Giant blockbusters and really sappy awards contenders.   This latest rumored Smith film falls into the latter sappy awards contenders' category, somewhere along the lines of The Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds. In fact, that same director, Gabriele Muccino, may once again collaborate with Smith on Flowers for Algernon, based on the book by Daniel Keyes that has gone through several adaptations over the years – most notably with Ralph Nelson's Charly, which nabbed Cliff Robertson an Academy Award in...

Will Smith Picking Flowers for Algernon?

10 November 2009 10:11 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

While we reported earlier today that one Will Smith project appeared to be dead, it seems Smith is picking up another. Pajiba is reporting that Will Smith has signed on to star and produce an adaptation of the novel Flowers for Algernon.

The 1959 novel by Daniel Keyes had been adapted before, with the 1968 film Charly, which Cliff Robertson picked up an Academy Award for. This modern-day take on the story is being set up at Sony with Smith's production company Overbrook Entertainment to produce as well.

The story centers on a man of low intelligence who is the first to undergo a surgery that is said to raise intelligence. While the operation is successful, and his Iq raises from 68 to 185, the side effects include social setbacks where he feels ostracized from society.

It doesn't seem that a writer or director has been set for the project, but the site speculates that Smith collaborator Gabrielle Muccino, »

Flowers for Will Smith

9 November 2009 4:00 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Flowers for Algernon is a story that I first read in grade school and yet remember fondly. It’s the story of Charlie, a mentally handicapped man who undergoes an experiment that drastically raises his Iq. Though pretty sentimental and pungent in weepy emotions, there is a lot that it says about intelligence and the way in which we relate to each other. Cliff Robertson (who you may remember as Uncle Ben from Spider-Man)  earned an Academy Award in a 1968 adaptation, Charly. Now, according to Pajiba, who cite inside sources, Will Smith is planning to produce and star in an update of Flowers for Algernon. Will Smith is not foreign to sentimental films, having starred in movies like The Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds. Unfortunately, he also has about twenty-five projects in development. Whether he eventually gets to them all, Algernon may have to wait. But if he does »

Writer Found For ‘Men In Black 3′

30 October 2009 4:45 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Back in April we reported on news from the Sony ShoWest presentation that the studio was developing a script for a third Men in Black movie, something which built on the rumors from over a year ago that franchise stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones were interested in suiting up for some alien escapades once more. Fast forward to now and an update has come out that Men In Black 3 has found its writer in the form of Tropic Thunder screenwriter, Etan Cohen (not to be confused with one half of the famous Coen brothers, Ethan).

Variety is reporting that Columbia Pictures (which Sony owns) has tapped Cohen to pen the script, but beyond that no deals have been made for either Smith or Jones to reprise their roles. Although I’d be very surprised if the studio didn’t have talks going on with the two stars »

Butler Sets Sights on ‘Slide,’ Hopes for ‘Happyness’ Director

26 October 2009 9:14 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Last week I got to talk with Gerard Butler, a man who your mother probably has up in poster form above her bed, on the occasion of Law Abiding Citizen hitting theaters and taking a lot of people's money. That film is the first that his production company Evil Twins, alongside manager Alan Siegel, has put out, and they are already getting the ball rolling on several others. Add Slide to that list. Straight from the Scottish horse's mouth: There’s a few different projects that we’ve been working on, but there’s one in particular – it’s a movie called Slide about a former baseball player who goes back to try and patch things up with his child and estranged wife and ends up coaching the kid’s baseball team," Butler said. "He becomes the subject of fascination and longer by every bored house wife in the town. And »

First Image and Featurette from Extraordinary Measures Starring Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell

CBS Films has sent over the first image and a first look featurette from director Tom Vaughan’s (”Starter for 10,” “What Happens in Vegas”) “Extraordinary Measures”. The film stars Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell and it’s inspired by the true story of John Crowley, a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds, and risked his family’s future to pursue a cure for his children’s life threatening disease. While the featurette is mostly the real John Crowley talking about his story, at the end Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser say a few words. While this kind of movie might not appeal to all of you, with the cast involved, I thought it was worth sharing. I’m hoping with Tom Vaughan directing it’ll be more than a movie of the week. Take a look at the image and featurette after the jump. “Extraordinary Measures »
