One of the shrewdest Oscarologists on the planet is Tariq Khan of Fox News, who often generously shares his views of current and past derbies with Gold Derby readers. Here he takes a nostalgic look at the past two decades, offering his take on the most competitive derbies. Words below are Tariq's. Thanks, m'friend!
We’ve often discussed those Oscar races that seem just too close to call . . . where it’s clear (or at least seems clear) that the eventual winner will nab the Oscar with only a few more votes than his or her nearest competitor. While we can never really know for sure (unless we get one of those top jobs at the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers,) we do have some idea of what may have been the closest races in Oscar history. Allow me to present what I believe were the 10 closest acting races over the course of the past 20 years. »

Edi Gathegi made quite a major impression in Twilight (2008), providing plenty of creeps as the almost-gentlemanly yet dangerous vampire, Laurent. As fans know, Laurent only makes the briefest of appearances in The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), but it's as memorable as it is short, with Laurent bumping into Bella (Kristen Stewart) in the woods of Forks, then having a close encounter with a few of Bella's werewolf friends. PopStar snagged a few minutes of exclusive interview time with Gathegi -- who was born in Kenya, raised in Los Angeles, and counts among his credits a recurring role on House M.D. (TV) and the films Gone Baby Gone (2007) and My Bloody Valentine 3D (2009) -- just hours before New Moon's spectacular Nov. 30th debut. Read on to hear Gathegi's thoughts about the Twlight experience, his big New Moon moment, and the reality that his work on Twilight is complete. You couldn't »

It's always very strange to see actors out of costume, dropping character, and sitting in front of you for a Q&A. This is especially true of an actor like Ed Harris, who has such a distinctive voice and presence that it's pretty odd to see him begging Kleenex from the audience so he can remove the fingerprints off his latest award. The man who seems so cool and collected in front of the camera (think of A History of Violence, Nixon, Gone Baby Gone, or any film where he's been unflappably tough) admitted that he lacked social skills, and was dreading the dinner to follow because he never knows what to say.
Well, for not knowing what to say, he still managed to be a very entertaining presence for an hour. When asked when he realized he was "pretty good" at acting, he cited an Oklahoma City production of »

A clutch of new films will cement Matt Damon's reputation as the hit of his generation. But that won't change this most reserved and politically committed of actors. Vanessa Thorpe reports
Runners taking part in the annual Miami Triathlon this time last year were surprised to spot a familiar face crossing the finishing line. It looked very like Jason Bourne, the implacable, brain-washed hitman, who was coming in with a time of just under an hour for the 6.2 mile leg. In fact Matt Damon, who plays Bourne in the trio of hit films based on Robert Ludlum's character, was competing in an effort to lose some weight. He had gained 30lbs that summer to play the part of the chubby, delusional executive at the centre of The Informant!, Steven Soderbergh's new film.
Its recent premiere in America may well prove the high-water mark of an already illustrious career. »

If you.ve got no intention of seeing Michael Winterbottom.s The Killer Inside Me, then this video is for you. Afm released this nearly 6-minute long promo trailer for the flick starring Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson and Bill Pullman. They call this a trailer? It needs to be branded with a major spoiler alert warning! The movie is based on Jim Thompson.s 1952 novel of the same name. It.s about a deputy sheriff named Lou Ford (Affleck), who seems like a typical man of the law, but beneath the uniform is actually a violent sociopath. There.s no point in giving you any additional details because the promo is a total tell-all. On the acting front, I.m psyched to see Affleck in his first starring role since Gone Baby Gone. As for Hudson and Alba, their reputations are plunging but their talent still has to »

We know how it is: You’d like to go to the movies this weekend, but you’re gonna be busy staring at a big button, arguing with yourself about whether or not to push it. But you can have a multiplex-like experience at home with a collection of the right DVDs. And when someone asks you on Monday, “Hey, did you see The Box this weekend?” you can reply, “No, I contemplated cinematic moral conundrums of a different order.” Instead Of: The Box, Richard Kelly’s mysterious thriller about a moral dilemma -- push a button, kill a stranger, and pocket a cool million -- that turns out to be far stranger than it appears at first... Watch: Kelly’s first film, the deeply disturbing Donnie Darko (2001), which bends time as well as moral expectations in order to craft a deliciously odd parable about sacrifice; it’s so good »

Casey Affleck has been known to take some pretty intense roles as of late. His first being the role of Robert Ford in The Assassination of Jesse James and then his work on his brother’s project, Gone Baby Gone. It looks like Affleck is going to step it up once again as Sheriff Lou Ford in the ultra-violent The Killer Inside Me.
The film is based on the novel by Jim Thompson, who also wrote the novels films such as The Grifters and The Getaway were adapted from. The original 1976 film starred Stacey Keach, who took on the role that Affleck is now running with.
The extended trailer shows off some of the intense moments (hopefully not all) from the film, such as some raunchy aggressive sex with both Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson, as well as a violent murder of one of them. This may just be the »

In 2007, Casey Affleck was a force to be reckoned with as he landed a one-two punch with “Gone Baby Gone” and “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” the latter of which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Affleck makes his return next summer in Michael Winterbottom’s “The Killer Inside Me,” based off Jim Thompson’s novel. The story follows a bored, small-town cop who decides to liven up his life with a little sociopathy and murder followed by the fun of covering up his tracks.
The trailer from the American Film Market has popped up online and at nearly six-minutes long, it gives away most of the film so if you’re looking to go in cold, do not watch it. But I’ll tell you up front that Affleck looks as charming and devious as ever. Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson, Simon Baker, »

Chris Pine has been all over the trades after his breakthrough performance in Star Trek with his name being mentioned along with several different projects over the past few months. Now we're getting wind of a project that Pine apparently joined just days before Star Trek even hit theaters as Pajiba says that he is attached to the Ben Affleck scripted crime-drama The Blade Itself based on Marcus Sakey's novel of the same name. Aaron Stockard co-wrote the screenplay with Affleck after first writing the script for the actor's directorial debut Gone Baby Gone back in 2007, but apparently it's not in the cards for Affleck to direct. Though development has been quiet, Pajiba's inside source says that directors like Steve Zailian and Sam Raimi have been approached to direct, but to no avail. Now the plan is to have the top contender for the job meet with Pine before »

It.s been over a year since we heard that Ben Affleck and his Gone Baby Gone writing/producing partner, Sean Bailey, nabbed the rights to bring the novel The Blade Itself to the big screen. Contrary to popular belief, just because news about the film isn.t flooding the Internet, doesn.t mean development has come to a halt. In fact, we.ve learned that progress has been made on the hush hush. According to Pajiba, Star Trek.s Chris Pine signed on to star in the film in May, but as of six weeks ago, his status changed from starring to attached. Pine is scheduled to meet with the film.s top directorial candidate before sealing the deal. As for the director, Pajiba says the individual set to rendezvous with Pine is not Affleck. If Pine does sign on to star, the role will be a great departure »

Back in June of this year the first trailer appeared for Shutter Island, Martin Scorsese’s latest collaboration with favorite leading man, Leonardo DiCaprio. It was creepy-as-hell and solidified it on my list of most anticipated movies of 2009. Unfortunately a couple of months later news hit that Paramount had moved the release date from October 2nd this year to February 19th next year. As a movie fan – as well as a follower of daily movie news – that ranks right up there with the most annoying things to happen.
A second theatrical trailer surfaced at the start of last month that even though it wasn’t as effective the first (maybe it was the initial exposure to the creepy material that lead to the effect it had on me) but nonetheless made it look great. And now we have a third Shutter Island trailer for your viewing pleasure, which is basically »

Just recently a couple of trailers appeared online for two highly-anticipated films starring Matt Damon: Paul Greengrass’ Green Zone and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus. They are very different types of movies – Green Zone being like Bourne set during the Iraq War and Invictus looking like one of those biopics that is clearly “Oscar-ish.” Check out both of the trailers below.
Green Zone reunites the Bourne director Paul Greengrass and star, Matt Damon, and is a war-drama/thriller about about a pair of CIA agents on the trail of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. We reported back in the summer of this year that Green Zone had been moved from a late 2009 release to March 12th, 2010, leading to some confusion over that why, as the film seems like prime material for the Oscars.
However, as you’ll see in the trailer below – much as was the case »

Michelle Monaghan and Jimmy Bennett in Trucker
Photo: Monterey Media Picked up and added to the release schedule out of the blue, it seems the primary reason James Mottern's Trucker is making the rounds is an attempt by Monterey Media to score some award season attention for its lead star Michelle Monaghan (Mission: Impossible III). Playing a big-rig truck driver leading a life on the road with a past that will soon come back into play, Monaghan performs well enough in the role, but to assume it's going to propel her into the Oscar race is a reach. Although it will make sure she isn't forgotten in the coming years should she continue down this path.
Monaghan plays Diane, a young and attractive truck driver we first meet in a cheap hotel room having sex with a man we don't see after the opening couple of minutes. This is the life »

Who would.ve thought that Ben Affleck would turn out to be an above average director? Out of the two very similar Denis Lehane adapted films, Gone Baby Gone and Mytic River, I much prefer Affleck.s Gone Baby Gone. It has a much more realistic feel to it, and it.s far more engaging. So if Affleck can pull it off, maybe his Bff can too. According to Contactmusic, Matt Damon is very interested in directing a film of his own. The site quotes Matt as saying that he .can't wait to direct. I choose my movies based on the director and so I've been treating the last 12 years like a film school.. He went on to say, "All the directors I've worked with have been very tolerant of my questions. The next step is for me to try it myself." He.s not in a rush though. As »
