Birthday Suits, That Girl Those Girls

1694 Voltaire, Enlightment philosopher, writer, progressive. Candide is his work that's most familiar to modern audiences having been filmed, adapted, and put on lists like this one as well as being adapted into a popular and oft-revived comic operetta. Kristin Chenoweth doing "Glitter and Be Gay" is theater heaven.

1912 Eleanor Powell, queen of tap. Broadway Rhythm it's got me Everybody...

1938 Marlo Thomas, That Girl. Yes, that one.

1941 Juliet Mills, Globe nominated film actress (Avanti!) best known for TV roles. She was a cougar before they had a word for it, marrying hunky Maxwell Caulfield when she was 39 and he was 21, before he'd even made Grease 2. They're still married, going on thirty years now. Today's generation might know her best as witchy Tabitha from her long campy run on daytime soap Passions.

Lukas Moodysson's Mammoth Undertaking

20 November 2009 9:24 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Sweden's Lukas Moodysson burst onto the international film scene with 1998's "Fucking Åmål" (or, as it was cowardly renamed in English-speaking countries, "Show Me Love"), a carefree, naturalistic drama about a reluctant romance between two small-town teenage girls. Just as ebullient is his 2000 period satire and popular favorite "Together," which focuses on the dysfunctional relationships and values of '70s left-wingers living in a commune, after which Moodysson began pursuing darker, moodier fare. 2002's critical darling "Lilya 4-ever" couldn't get much bleaker, tracing a Russian girl's journey from drop-out to prostitute to kidnapped sex slave. Following that were two avant-garde experiments: 2004's shockingly explicit take on amateur porn, "A Hole in My Heart," and his 2006 stream-of-consciousness curiosity, "Container."

Though American actress Jena Malone provided narration to that last film, Moodysson's new drama is also his first English-language production, mostly. "Mammoth" splits between three related storylines in New York, the Philippines and Thailand. »

Film: Review:Women In Trouble

12 November 2009 12:07 PM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

In early 2009, the “everything-is-connected” movie finally hit bottom when its chief architect, writer Guillermo Arriaga (21 Grams, Babel), made his directorial debut with The Burning Plain, a film that epitomized the dirge-like self-importance of the worst cinematic puzzles. The best thing about Women In Trouble—another everything-is-connected feature from a screenwriter, this time Gothika and Snakes On A Plane scribe Sebastian Gutierrez—is that it isn’t a Guillermo Arriaga film. It isn’t about violence, abuse, racial identity, masochism, guilt, or any other themes piled onto the audience’s conscience like weights on the barbell in Unbreakable. Instead ... »

Crashville: The Risky Route To Oscar Glory

6 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

In March 2006 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sprung one of its annual surprises by awarding the best picture Oscar to Crash, rather than Ang Lee’s acclaimed gay cowboy drama, Brokeback Mountain. At the time it looked as though racism and multiple vehicular pile-ups had trumped homosexuality in the battle of the “hot button” issue movies. But perhaps the Academy was belatedly acknowledging the kind of ambitious, densely plotted, multi-character dramas made famous by the great Robert Altman. From 1975’s Nashville, to Short Cuts, Prêt à Porter and his 2006 swansong A Prairie Home Companion, Altman allowed audiences to immerse themselves in the cinematic equivalent of a book of short stories. Writer Alissa Quart has characterised these films with multiple intersecting plotlines as “hyperlink movies”, in which, “information, character, and action co-exist without hierarchy”. Now I’m a fan of Altman and I loved Paul Thomas Anderson’s, »

10 Most Underrated Young Actresses

22 October 2009 1:48 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Can the media alter the public's perception of an actor? I believe so - that's why we have the likes of Megan Fox hugging the headlines and getting the covers of men's magazines, while a lot of more talented young actresses could not even manage to get featured and have interviews. If you think about it, what has she done in the movies to deserve so much publicity and attention? - - -

- - - Some may argue, 'hey, don't blame her, she's just good at playing the Hollywood game, and she got a shrewd agent managing her career!'. That maybe so and yes, I agree when others say 'she'll not last another year - others will soon take over'. There are those who may say 'Agents and talent managers always take care of their wards - that's why stars have a public image and a private one'. »

Oscar Season Begins!

19 October 2009 12:28 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

A montage of performances by the "breakthrough actor" nominees for the Gotham Independent Film Awards. In order, Ben Foster, Patton Oswalt, Jeremy Renner, Catalina Saavedra, Soulemane Sy Savane. And they’re off! With the announcement this afternoon of the nominees for the annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, the four-month frenzy of film-industry backslapping, backscratching, and backstabbing known as Oscar season is officially under way. Organized by the Independent Filmmaker Project (Ifp), the awards are significant insomuch as they are the first of countless encomium-distribution ceremonies to be held across the country in the coming months, from the American Film Institute awards to the Pontchotoula Times Critics Circle Awards. Piled together, these events will constitute so many tea leaves and entrails from which Oscar observers will attempt to prophesy the whims of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Oscar soothsayers pay special attention to the “breakthrough actor” category, the »

Me and Slackery News Tidbits

15 October 2009 1:30 PM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

I thought we were having a slow news week, but the local film news really added up. Here are some of the highlights:

The Statesman's Out and About blog released the results of the newspaper's "Best Austin Movie Theater" poll. No surprise: All four Austin-area Alamo theaters were in the top four slots, although we're a bit disappointed that Village and its snazzy 4K digital didn't rate a bit higher. Bigger surprise: Tinseltown Pflugerville tied for fifth place with the Bob Bullock IMAX theater. Jette saw a movie at the Pflugerville theater in June and found the picture and sound quality atrocious -- some of the speakers weren't working at all. Readers, what charms of Tinseltown Pflugerville are we missing?Richard Linklater's latest film, Me and Orson Welles (pictured at right), now has an Austin release date of December 4. If you want to see it sooner, the movie will »

New Promotional Posters for Upcoming Films Including Neuromancer, Chloe, The Irishman, and I Come With The Rain

Here’s some inside baseball about Hollywood that your average moviegoer may not know: movies do not get made solely from investors or studios nor do they make money solely from domestic box office.  A large majority of films, especially true indie films (i.e. no name stars), require the sale of their foreign distribution rights to finish the film they’re selling or to secure a profit that will provide investors with a good return on their investment.  However, films with name actors like Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Val Kilmer, and Christopher Walken also have to play this game.  Some movies do it by creating unofficial posters and after the jump, we’ve featured six of these posters plus synopses for films with name actors but are still trying to secure funding.  However, this is no guarantee that these films will ever get made and just because someone made up a poster, »

As the calendar page turns to October and the last of the summer blockbusters fade into the distance, it is time to cleanse our palate. That's right, folks, awards season is here once again, and this weekend's release of "A Serious Man" indicates that it's time to put away remakes, roman numerals and TV adaptations and instead expect movies that are — gasp! — smart.

The busiest actors in Hollywood are never the A-list stars -- they're the character actors, habitually turning in standout roles in ensemble casts.  Clifton Collins Jr., who's made a splash in films like Capote, Traffic, and Babel, is currently the best of the busiest: in the past year, he's appeared in Sunshine Cleaning, Horsemen, Star Trek, Crank: High Voltage, and Extract...and you can soon see him in the long-awaited Boondock Saints 2 as well as Jim Sheridan's Brothers.  We had the chance to talk with Collins recently via e-mail, through which he ruminated about why most CGI movies fail, his ... »

The Chance of Filmmaker Carrera.

29 September 2009 6:56 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Jose here with some Foreign Language Film Oscar analysis.

The second to last time Mexico was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, the movie was made by respected director Carlos Carrera. The film was The Crime of Father Amaro, which arguably banked in on the crush the whole world had developed with rising star Gael García Bernal and of course the controversy factor.

Mexico is counting on Carrera to get them their eighth nomination in the category with his newest film Backyard a thriller which deals with the murders of women in the bordertown of Ciudad Juárez. The "muertas of Juárez" as they've become known, have been a pressing issue for the local authorities for more than a decade now. Very little has been done to solve what amounts to more than 500 crimes (including murders and disappearances).

The film is preachy and sloppy (read my review here) but »

Guillermo Arriaga on Guillermo Arriaga

The La Times has an interesting article up about Guillermo Arriaga, writer of such films as “21 Grams” and “Babel”, as he discusses his childhood, his loss of smell, and the inspiration for his recent directorial debut, “The Burning Plain”, which is currently enjoying a limited release. He also share some of his insights on the directing process: “Writing is a very lonely activity. You cannot turn to anyone and ask, ‘Where should I go now?’ When you are directing, you can always turn to your director of photography and say, ‘I have no idea. Help me.’ Having all those people with that energy, everyone fighting to make the best film possible, is something to enjoy.” »
