Year: 2009
Directors: Richard Kelly
Writers: Richard Kelly

Rating: 9 out of 10
Richard Kelly channels no less than the ghost of Stanley Kubrick to turn Richard Matheson's blip of a Twilight Zone idea into one of the most astounding pieces of cerebral science fiction cinema I have ever seen. Yes, The Box is that good. It dares to scale the same intellectual heights as 2001: A Space Odyssey and it revels in the potent, restrained formalism of The Shining without ever leaving its two main characters or plot too far behind. In fact, Kelly is so self assured in executing this delicious layer-cake of a movie that The Box is now a front runner for my choice of best film of the year (yep, move over Moon) and I absolutely can't wait to see it again so I can dig even deeper into its box of mysteries. »

Back in 1995, director David Fincher and screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker (The Wolfman) collaborated on what is now touted as a “crime classic” and “a blueprint for modern serial killer movies.” That movie was Se7en, and I totally agree with all the praise that’s been heaped upon it (it recently featured in our “Horror Plus” series).
Now, 14 years later, Fincher and Walker are going to be collaborating once more, this time on an adaptation of the novel The Reincarnation of Peter Proud for Columbia. THR’s Heat Vision Blog reports the news of their involvement, along with producer Michael De Luca (Blade, Ghost Rider). The author of the book, Max Ehrlich, adapted it into a movie in 1975 of the same name, so I guess in a way this movie is a remake by Fincher (there’s that “remake or new adaptation” question again). According to THR:

David Fincher’s career is pretty much flawless. You might cry “blasphemy!” simply because of Alien 3, but I’ll be very honest with you: that is not a bad entry in that series, no matter what you might believe. And then Fight Club? Zodiac? Seven?
Now, he’s working on an adaptation of the Max Ehrlich novel The Reincarnation of Peter Proud, to be scripted by Seven’s Andrew Kevin Walker. The story has already been self-adapted by the author once for a film in the mid-1970s, starring Margot Kidder.
According to THR, the film centers on a “college professor who begins having recurring dreams and nightmares and, realizing they are images of a past life, decides to search out the source of the visions. With his girlfriend in tow, he discovers a woman and her grown-up daughter who are keys to his past life.”
Yeah, that reads like a Fincher logline, »

Principal Photography began today on Matt Reeves’ “Let Me In”, the remake of Tomas Alfredson’s acclaimed film, “Let the Right One In” which was an adaptation of the John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel of the same name. It’s difficult to find a fan of Alfredson’s film who is excited for this remake since the Swedish landscape is such an integral part of the film’s tone and overarching themes. Couple that with the tendency of American films to avoid ambiguity and relationships which may make audiences uncomfortable and you can see why the reception of its production is (appropriately) chilly.
But actors Elias Koteas (”Zodiac”), Cara Buono (”The Sopranos”), and Sasha Barrese (”The Hangover”) are giving the film a chance and joining stars Kodi-Smit McPhee (”The Road”), Chloe Moretz (”Kick-Ass”) and Richard Jenkins (”The Visitor”). Hit the jump for more details.

Update: We’ve added a featurette for The Fourth Kind
With Halloween arriving this week, moviegoers are going to be on the hunt for that perfect spooky film in which to scarf all their Trick ‘R Treat candy. After the low-budget ghost flick Paranormal Activity carved up Saw VI, at the box office this past weekend, it seems as though Halloween moviegoers are in the market for something new (something Boo!) this year.
Following just on the heels of the scariest day of the year comes The Fourth Kind, a movie which recounts the “true events” of one doctor’s (Milla Jovovich) investigation into a town whose residents experienced shared phenomenon having to do (supposedly) with alien abduction.
So, alien abduction theorists, are you guys as dedicated as the leagues of ghost hunters out there? Will The Fourth Kind become the next fright flick box office smash? Or will it »

A unique Sundance Channel interview with costume designer Casey Storm — a man who has worked on films including Being John Malkovich, Zodiac and The Onion Movie — has revealed some interesting details regarding Where the Wild Things Are’s design and the process of director Spike Jonze.
Storm pretty much glows about Jonze, as would be expected (”He has an amazing ability to find people whom he admires and then ask them to do something they’ve never done before. He knows who gets his creative vision and will execute it perfectly”). The interesting details are in the specifics of Wild Things’ production:
“The biggest challenge was getting the wolf suit right. It’s tough when you have so much scrutiny on just one suit. How do you interpret a two-dimensional sketch? How do we get the details? We spent two months just taking snaps, playing with fabrics, etc. One of »

Fans of HBO’s Entourage know Adam Goldberg as Nick Rubenstein, the spoiled coke-addicted son of a famous movie producer who agrees to fund Medellin, Vince's ill-fated dream project. To others, he is Julie Delpy’s lover in the romantic drama 2 Days in Paris, or the "stereotypically Jewish" guy in films like Dazed and Confused and The Hebrew Hammer. Over the last decade or so, Goldberg has worked with a slew of top-drawer directors including Steven Spielberg (Saving Private Ryan) Tony Scott (Déjà vu), David Fincher (Zodiac), Richard Linklater (Waking Life) and Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), predominantly in supporting roles. He is also an accomplished musician and filmmaker.
Now, in the satirical spoof on New York’s Chelsea art scene (Untitled), Goldberg steps into the lead role as Adrian Jacobs, a brooding and sullen composer of esoteric discordant musical works that feature — among other sounds produced by ready-made everyday »

Top Ten Working American Directors
A list like this is tricky to the point of madness. However, I'm going to save you the trouble by saying it right here, right now: Most of the choices on this list are obvious. There's a reason why certain names continually pop up whenever conversation drifts toward great American films. So there. I said it.
Yet, how do you weigh the likes of Francis Ford Coppola, a genius who delivered some of the all-time greatest films, but fizzled out 25 or so years ago, against a filmmaker like Woody Allen who has worked consistently for decades churning out both brilliant gems and disposable time wasters? How do you compare either of these directors against an auteur such as Spike Jonze who has only opened two films so far, but both are masterpieces?
In the end I just went with my gut. I knew there were »

Let me open by saying, outright, that Rian Johnson's debut film-noir/high school crossover, Brick, absolutely floored me. I saw, in that film, a true homage built on and aimed at, a love for a genre that was somehow beyond affection. A great movie and a story that portrayed a specialised and well crafted knack for dialogue and plot that even Tarantino couldn't muster. It had a small powerful heart. There was no pretension or slyness that tied itself to the film (yes there was a style and a theme which enhanced it for effect...) but it seamed to have a pulse and a life of its own without immediately prodding you, self consciously, to do nothing but remember other films. Despite the numerous allusions to Dasheil Hammet's writing and film noir as a whole it stood up on its own two legs. It lived inside an overly revisited »

Last week, MTV Movies asked Jesse Eisenberg about the upcoming Facebook movie, pressing him for an answer as to whether he was part of the rumored cast, which also included Justin Timberlake and Andrew Garfield. Eisenberg simply responded, "They are rumors; that is true."
Well, now we can freely say that all these rumors are true. Variety is reporting that all three are now officially attached to The Social Network, which is being directed by David Fincher (Benjamin Button, Zodiac, Fight Club) and produced by Kevin Spacey.
The script for the movie was penned by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, Charlie Wilson's War) and tells the story of how Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook in 2004 while a sophomore at Harvard. In the five years since, Facebook has amassed more than 200 million users. Sorkin adapted his script from the Ben Mezrich book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, »

This one can't fail.
West Wing scribe Aaron Sorkin has turned one of the strangest success stories of recent times, the founding of Facebook and its subsequent fallout, into a film to be directed by David Fincher.
Resurrect Jimmy Stewart and get him to lead the film and you've got pretty much my ultimate cinematic line-up.
Taking the story of Facebook founders through the turbulent highs and lows, whose success we are all familiar with, and making a complex character-driven drama is Sorkin's forte, not so for Fincher, whose previous films have been incredibly stylistic and powerful - it'll be interesting to see if he will use his experience on Zodiac to bring this real and human story to the screen.
Variety are reporting tonight (via AICN) that Fincher now has his cast. »

Chloe Sevigny is reportedly dating Jason Segel. "Zodiac" actress Chloe was reportedly smooching with the "How I Met Your Mother" star at a post Emmy Awards party on Sunday night.
A source said: "At about midnight, Segel and Sevigny were kissing in a corner of the party away from the main bar area. They stopped once they realized people were watching them."
"I don't know if the couple shared the same ride home, but they did head out of the party side-by-side - shortly after their smooching session was noticed."
Agents for both film star Chloe, 34, and Jason, 29, have declined to comment on their possible relationship.

During an interview for the upcoming Zombieland, MTV Movies asked Jesse Eisenberg about the rumors he will star as Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, which begins filming in October and will be released sometime next year.
When asked very pointedly if the rumors were true, Eisenberg evasively answered, "They are rumors; that is true." He then fumbled for a graceful exit from the conversation, but definitely left some room for interpretation.
The Social Network is being helmed by David Fincher, who also directed Benjamin Button, Zodiac, and Fight Club. This prompted Eisenberg's Zombieland co-star Woody Harrelson, who was also present for the interview, to ask Eisenberg how he could possibly say no. Eisenberg simply responded (unconvincingly, in our opinion), "I'm sure you could find a reason to say no."

David Fincher (Fight Club, Benjamin Button, Zodiac) is constantly hired by Nike to direct their commercials. We have already seen one called "Fate," which follows the lives of the San Diego Chargers' running back Ladainian Tomlinson and the Pittsburgh Steelers' safety Troy Polamalu from their young age all the way till their collision in the NFL. Today, we have a new Nike ad that Fincher put together. It is entitled "Alter Ego" and is meant to promote the company's Pro Combat innovative padding system. The commercial features Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and starting last Thursday, will run through several weeks on major networks and cable channels including Espn, ABC, Fox, NBC, NFL Network, MTV and Bet. Justin Timberlake will play one of the lead parts in a film dedicated to the birth of Facebook, directed by the brilliant David Fincher. The music superstar will play Sean Parker, Facebook's current president and co-founder of Napster. After his parts in, variously, a flop ("The Love Guru", voted worst film of 2008), a cursed masterpiece ("Southland Tales") and a number of under-the-radar films (such as "Alpha Dog"), Timberlake's participation in "The Social Network" will probably raise his actor's status. Even more so now that David Fincher, considered one of the best filmmakers in the world, is tapped to direct. His filmography speaks for itself: "Se7en", "The Game", "Zodiac", "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", "Fight Club". While it is currently in pre-production and shouldn't start shooting before next month, "The Social Network" is already one of 2010's most awaited fil... »

Director David Fincher is going to begin filming the Facebook movie, "The Social Network," in October around Boston and Cambridge. And we now have some rumored casting choices. ScriptShadow has learned that the role of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will be played by Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland), the role of Napster co-founder Sean Parker will be played by Justin Timberlake, and Andrew Garfield will portray Eduardo Saverin, Facebook's co-creator who was allegedly betrayed by Zuckerberg. Upon hearing of this, The Playlist checked in with their inside source and found out that all three actors were present during a table-read with Fincher and Laray Mayfield, who has previously cast actors for Fincher's "Benjamin Button," "Zodiac" and "Fight Club." The site goes on to say that contracts have yet to be signed and everything could still change. »
