Trailer - Pedro Almodóvar's 'Broken Embraces'

14 October 2009 4:47 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

They often go overlooked in the discussion of the great director-star pairings, but there's very little doubt that Pedro Almodóvar gets the best out of Penélope Cruz or that she raises the level of his films. True, he's great as it is and Cruz has been better in general in recent years (if you thought she was good winning the gold in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, you should see Elegy), but together, it's just one of those magical combinations that really doesn't come along all that often.

Their latest collaboration is Broken Embraces (Los Abrazos Rotos), and once again, Cruz is building a case for Academy Award consideration. If she does get a nomination, it would be her third in four years, following Vicky Cristina and Almodóvar's Volver. She sure has left Sahara sufficiently behind her, hasn't she?

From the trailer, featured below, you don't get much of a story to work from, »

As the calendar page turns to October and the last of the summer blockbusters fade into the distance, it is time to cleanse our palate. That's right, folks, awards season is here once again, and this weekend's release of "A Serious Man" indicates that it's time to put away remakes, roman numerals and TV adaptations and instead expect movies that are — gasp! — smart.

Naturally, we here at MTV will be all over the 2009 awards season, right up to our annual coverage backstage at the Oscars. But who will be the next "Slumdog," "Brokeback" or "Little Miss Sunshine"? Below you'll find a list of 10 films we'll be watching closely between now and Oscar night.

Penelope Cruz Reacts to Pregnancy Rumors & Kissing Scarlett Johansson

28 September 2009 3:39 PM, PDT | TheInsider.com | See recent The Insider news »

Rumors have been swirling as to whether Penelope Cruz is pregnant with her actor boyfriend Javier Bardem's baby -- the actress talks to Vanity Fair magazine about the reports and answers the question:  Of her female costars, who is the better kisser, Scarlett Johansson or Charlize Theron? Cruz locked lips with Johansson in the 2008 film 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' -- which also starred Bardem -- and kissed Theron in the 2004 movie 'Head in the Clouds.' When asked to compare her smooches with the sexy stars, the Oscar-winning actress told Vf, "No matter how I answer that I will be in trouble. Both were pretty beautiful partners." As for the baby bump rumors, the actress answered the question by telling a story about her 'Volver' director Pedro Almodóvar. She said Almodóvar attempted to squash the pregnancy rumors when a journalist asked him about it on a red carpet, »

Tiff ‘09: Broken Embraces

Abrazos Ratos (Broken Embraces) Directed by Pedro Almodovar After Live Flesh, All About My Mother and Volver, director Pedro Almodóvar and his muse Penelope Cruz unite for a fourth time with Broken Embraces, a film about film-making. Broken Embraces is a film within a film that jumps back and forth between past and present and evokes genres as far apart as noir and melodrama. Sugar coated on top are enough film references waiting to be spotted that is sure to put a smile on Quentin Tarantino's face. Only Almodovar's references are at times too easily recognizable, art imitating art, and in case you didn't catch it the first time, he's sure to have his characters name off each movie title for you. In one of the more interesting subplots, a young filmmaker stalks his stepmother (Penelope Cruz), hoping to expose her affair. His character is a caricature of Carl Boehm's Peeping Tom, »

Tiff 2009 Two Days In: What’s Good & Bad So Far

12 September 2009 1:19 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Coming up to the third day of the film festival and thus far I have seen The Informant!, which I liked very much despite some problems with decision making by the director, Broken Embraces, which features just a stunning performance from the astonishing Penelope Cruz, Antichrist, a repellant yet unforgettable film, Hugh Hefner, a superb documentary that should earn an Oscar nomination, Bright Star, a disappointing film from Jane Campion, Jennifer’s Body, a rather average horror film from the pen of Juno (2007) writer Diablo Cody and the superb Up in the Air, from the great Jason Reitman.

Matt Damon and George Clooney are both so good, so strong in their respective films that choosing one over the other for the Oscar seems impossible, but if I had a vote it would go to Clooney for his stunning work as a man who thinks he is living a life he loves, »

Tiff 2009 Must See List: Broken Embraces

#5 Broken Embraces [1] Director: Pedro Almodovar Cast: Penelope Cruz, Lluis Homar After the success of their collaboration on Volver [2], Pedro Almodóvar [3] and Penélope Cruz are once again working together; this time on a film entitled Los Abrazos Rotos (Broken Embraces). The film follows a blind screenwriter and former director Mateo Blanco, living a double life under the pseudonym of Harry Caine. The man writes lives and loves in the darkness. He was the victim of a brutal car accident fourteen years ago. Not only did he lose his sight, but also the woman of his life, Lena (Penelope Cruz). I have never been disappointed with Pedro Almodovar, and we're expecting big things from Broken Embraces, one of our most anticipated films of 2009. Sordid Murder and Sex: Todd Haynes Directing Kate Winslet in Mildred Pierce Miniseries

14 August 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- The fascination for Michael Curtiz's Mildred Pierce continues. After Pedro Almodovar integrated parts of the film in the storyline for Volver, Todd Haynes will be making Mildred into miniseries mode and into a less straight jacket version than his homage to Douglas Sirk with Far From Heaven: meaning I'm expecting Haynes to be more faithful to the original novel written by James M. Cain than, the 1945 film. Logically, the miniseries will find a home with HBO (Vachon's Killer Films sided with them for Mrs Harris).  Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet is on board to play the role that Joan Crawford won an Academy Award for - it being a bored housewife who gets into the restaurant business, an enterprise that leads to back-stabbing, romance and murder. Here is the original trailer for the Warner Bros film. If this goes into production, this will be the first time I'm really psyched about a miniseries. »

Broken Embraces - Poster

28 July 2009 11:16 AM, PDT | Latemag.com/film | See recent LateFilmFull news »

Broken Embraces is a four–way tale of amour–fou, shot in the style of ‘50s American film noir at its most hard–boiled, and will mix references to works like Nicholas Ray’s In a Lonely Place and Vincente Minnelli’s The Bad and the Beautiful, with signature Almodóvar themes such as Fate, the mystery of creation, guilt, unscrupulous power, the eternal search of fathers for sons, and sons for fathers. Broken Embraces is an original screenplay written by tPedro Almodóvar which see's him once team up with Penelope Cruz following their successful collaboration on Volver, for which she was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. First Look: Penelope Cruz in U.S. 'Broken Embraces' poster

8 July 2009 2:28 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Through all the ups and downs at this year's Cannes Film Festival one of the most constant refrains was the more than solid performance of Penelope Cruz in Pedro Almodovar's "Broken Embraces."  Described as a melodramtic homage to Hitchockian thrillers such as "Vertigo," "Embraces" is the fourth collaboration between longtime friends Cruz and Almodovar.  In fact, it was Almodovar's "Volver" which provided Cruz with her first Oscar nomination in 2007.  She lost out to "The Queen's" Helen Mirren that year, but won this past go around for her superb comic performance in "Vicky Christina Barcelona." Cannes 2009: The Wrap-Up

25 May 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- With no run away, break out titles as in the previous years (Babel, Volver, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Ncfom, Silent Light, The Class, Gomorrah, Synecdoche, New York, Waltz with Bashir) Cannes 2009 might not have been a bust, but it was disappointing to see so many mediocre films make it into the main comp, which could only signify that: Venice and Tiff might have vintage festival editions ahead (we'll be in Toronto covering that festival). It would be unfair to totally dis the festival as there were plenty of other films worth mentioning. At the top of my list is Andrea Arnold's second film, Fish Tank (which shared the 3rd place prize with Thirst). [Update: As an added bonus, check out the video feature (below) which was recorded with Alex Billington from Firstshowing.net. We go over some of the highlights of the fest.] Fish Tank features a delicious performance from a non-actor Katie Jarvis who was picked from obscurity (she was apparently in a heated, public argument with her boyfriend and I'm not sure if it »

The Art of Self-Advertising

Adam of Club Silencio here. In full anticipation for Broken Embraces (and full disgust with a Us dramedy of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), let's play Six Degrees of Pedro Almodóvar! One rule: you can only use Pedro Almodóvar movies...

Upon re-watching his brilliant film-noir tribute Bad Education, I couldn't help but notice how many times Pedro actually pays tribute to himself and even gives advanced previews to his own films. Simple enough I suppose when one of the lead characters is based on Pedro himself (in)directly: a queer filmmaker drawn to offbeat character pieces and an explosive exposé on Catholic priests exposing themselves.

Decked out in alter-ego Pedro's production office are posters accentuating these close ties. The two worth special notice are for a film titled La Abuela Fantasma, which translates roughly to "Ghost Grandma." I can only assume this means Almodóvar was tinkering with »

Almodovar To Make A TV Show

26 April 2009 10:20 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Pedro Almodovar, the ace Spanish director of Volver and this year's Cannes effort Broken Embraces, is set to turn one of his early hits into a TV show. Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, a farcical story about love, infidelity, terrorism, sleeping pills and gazpacho, was a massive hit for the director in 1988, and is now going to be an English-language show. The original film starred Carmen MauraRossy de Palma and a young Antonio Banderas, in a story about Maura's Pepa, an actress who dubs commercials and whose life goes into a tailspin when her lover leaves her. While she goes a bit nuts (puts her apartment up for sale, makes a large jug of sleeping-pill laced gazpacho) and searches Madrid for him, a series of misunderstandings between her friends and acquaintances make everything very complicated, very silly and totally bizarre. The TV show will be based »

Red Carpet Lineup

because someone is always walking one...

The glamour is a bit toned down this time of year but here's a handful of actresses that were lit by flashbulbs in the past couple of weeks.

Pedro Almodóvar and Penélope Cruz hold hands for the world premiere of Broken Embraces in Madrid. They won't have to smile for stateside paparazzi for awhile yet. It's a rule of distribution that everyone in Europe has to have a chance to see each new Pedro movie three times before it opens in the Us. There are several reviews of his Volver follow up floating round the web but I'm avoiding them. Spoilers, ya know. Almodóvar movies always hold surprises of plot, theme and/or character and it's best to see them unfold organically.

Emily Mortimer seems stunned to be photographed in her sparkly maroon cocoon... maybe she's just stunned that the flashes don't go off more often. »

DVD Review: ‘Elegy’ Features Spectacular Performances From Ben Kingsley, Penelope Cruz

17 March 2009 9:06 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0 Chicago – They have yet to perfectly adapt the great author Philip Roth’s tone from page to screen, but Isabel Coixet’s “Elegy” comes the closest. With other modern masters like Ian McEwan (“Atonement”) and Cormac McCarthy (“No Country For Old Men”) finding a new audience through the successful adaptations of their work, maybe “Elegy” will bring fans to Roth.

With the best performance from Ben Kingsley in a long time and a turn from Penelope Cruz that deserved more consideration in the year-end awards season conversation, “Elegy” certainly deserves a look on DVD. It’s the kind of adult, mature drama that seems to be made with less frequency every year.

Elegy was released on DVD on March 17th, 2009.

Kingsley plays David Kepesh, a perfectionist through and through who believes that not only is life planned out but that he wrote the plan. »

- [Editor's note: I'd like to introduce to you our new Spanish film correspondent (Marta Martinez) who will of course focus on everything "Spain" - which means she'll be talking about Almodóvar at length, but will also clue us in on the new names and films to emerge from this part of Europe.] Film News: At Home Compared to the less than impressive year in film we had last year, 2009 actually looks to be promising year in Spanish cinema and we were just reminded of it with the latest films to be released examples from titans such as Pedro Almodóvar and Alejandro Amenábar. Both are currently past the post-production stages and precious details on the pair have been released in the past couple of weeks. Almodóvar’s Los abrazos rotos (Broken Embraces) is releasing trailers, behind-the-scenes excerpts and the poster one sheets to the media. Thia inspired Warhol-styled poster reminds of the poster sheet of his last movie, Volver, Penélope Cruz’s facial expression is heightened by the abstract colors. The film's synopsis seems to pick up elements from his other films, this specially tells us the story of Mateo Blanco (played by Lluís Homar), a screenplay writer who got hardly injured in car accident 14 years ago. »
