10 Most Underrated Young Actors

12 October 2009 7:54 PM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Cinema is filled with multi-talented young actors who bring to life all types of characters. Sometimes, a role is given to the wrong guy - just because he has the looks (pin-up pretty, looks awesome wearing trunks) and the connection (a powerful talent agent at his side). But when the role is given to the right guy - moviegoers get to witness something unique, memorable and powerful, even magical. Anyway, even the 'right guy' needs an agent, of course...

- - -

- - - Underrated versus Overrated: If you've watched Jumper, then you'll notice the difference between Jamie Bell and Hayden Christensen - Bell has undeniable screen presence, I can't say the same with Hayden. It could have been different if Tom Sturridge was retained to play Hayden's part. Anyway, who am I to argue? Christensen has more box office appeal than the relatively unknown Sturridge, but acting-wise?

X-Men Origins: Magneto Could Start Next Year?

25 August 2009 12:12 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

David Goyer has made quite a reputation in Hollywood as one of the go to writers of comic book adaptations. His credits include penning Dark City, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and the Blade trilogy. With his fame growing each year, he's been offered plenty of other projects to help develop, mostly all related to comic properties. Among them is the upcoming Super Max film which would follow DC Comics' Green Arrow character incarcerated in prison with super villains for a crime he did not commit. Unfortunately his reputation as a director is frowned upon given his critically panned Blade Trinity and The Invisible. However that isn't stopping studios from granting him the director's chair on X-Men Origins; Magneto and the possibility to direct the first Avengers film. »

134 New Names Invited to Join the Academy

1 July 2009 1:08 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's »

Well, what an interesting turn of events! I was all ready to dump all over another of Ashton Kutcher's inevitably monstrous piles but it turns out Margarita Levieva (the god awful The Invisible) is in this mother f-cker and just like that I'm down. That chick is gorgeous. And here's a little known fact about her: when she was born there was an actual choir of angels there in the operating room to sing as she was delivered. Also, how does this clown not get punched in the face more? Is it »

Review: The Unborn

3 February 2009 8:44 PM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The Unborn is the worst kind of a horror movie. The kind that starts off fairly promising then quickly degenerates into a steaming pile of dog crap.

In The Unborn, the lovely Odette Yustman plays Casey Beldon, a woman haunted by horrific visions. Many of these visions revolve around a creepy young boy. (At last a Boy not a girl - this much originality you have to grant it). Could there be a connection between a terrified Casey and this strange child? Take a wild guess.

The Unborn was directed by David S. Goyer. The same David S. Goyer who co-developed screenplays for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight with Christopher and Jonathan Nolan. If Goyer's awful directorial efforts (Blade: Trinity, The Invisible) prove anything it's that he's much better suited writing screenplays with really talented co-writers. I know that sounds harsh, and the truth is, I take no pleasure in making such a comment. »

Sundance 2009: Top 10 New Faces

31 January 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- Every film festival allows for the opportunity to admire new acting talent and Sundance this year was no different. Here are some names that casting agents should look out for. 10.) Chloe Moretz (500 Days of Summer) Chloe Moretz might be a child actress, but her resume would take up many pages in the phone book. She did some voice work for Bolt and she was hired on several horror movies as the obligatory “little girl” in a horror film, but I imagine it is a small role in 500 Days of Summer that might break the ice. She plays the most stable character of the film in the form of a smart talking, 5th or 6th grader, younger sister role with the qualities of a 24 hour on call shrink. In her handful of scenes she is beautifully juxtaposed to Joseph Gordon-Levitt's central character. 9.) Margarita Levieva (Spread) & (Adventureland) Levieva has been »

The Unborn Movie Review

Title: The Unborn Cast: Odette Yustman (Cloverfield), Meagan Good (Saw V), Cam Gigandet and Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight) as Rabbi Sendak. Directed by: David Goyer (Blade: Trinity, The Invisible, Batman Begins) Scores: Technical: 85, Story: 55, Acting: 60, Overall: 66 Evil will do anything to live: is this just the tagline for the new supernatural thriller The Unborn, or the thought long-time followers of the horror genre will have of its creators after watching this movie? The idea of this film seemed promising at first glance; mixing a seemingly interesting plot-line, somewhat reminiscent of The Exorcist, the scariest movie of all time, with hit-making producer Michael Bay and his production company [...] »

Review: "The Unborn"

10 January 2009 3:10 PM, PST | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Seen on: January 10, 2009

The players: Director: David S. Goyer, Writer: David S. Goyer, Cast: Gary Oldman, Odette Yustman, Cam Gigandet, Jane Alexander, Meagan Good

Facts of interest: Goyer also directed "The Invisible" and "Blade: Trinity."

The plot: A young woman is haunted by an unborn spirit.

Our thoughts: David S. Goyer’s “The Unborn” is an incredibly lame horror flick, and I admit I found it utterly painful to sit through the whole thing without falling asleep or wanting to leave the theater. I know it sounds bad, but this is only the year’s first official week of new releases, and we’re already off to a disappointing start. »

Review: The Unborn

9 January 2009 9:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Any movie that begins with a dog wearing a human mask is in serious trouble. If it wants to use that kind of dream snippet as a launch pad for exploring a demented and increasingly bizarre world, if it wants to embrace a loony aesthetic and milk it for all it's worth, wonderful. Deliver a solid, jolting, dazzling, surprising thriller, and all will be forgiven.

On the other hand, if it desperately wants to be taken seriously, if it proceeds in a very measured and sober manner, if it becomes increasingly sedate as it calmly plods through tedious exposition, then you have a mess on your hands.

The Unborn looks like a ghost story, feels like a ghost story, and kinda sounds like a ghost story, but it's dead on arrival. Because writer/director David S. Goyer has been associated with a host of projects with which I have a natural affinity, »

David S. Goyer’s ‘The Unborn’ is Unoriginal, Uninspiring Mess

9 January 2009 7:21 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Odette Yustman stars in David S. Goyer’s “The Unborn,” a poorly conceived and produced horror movie that could have just as easily been called “The Un-scary,” “The Uninspiring,” “The Unoriginal,” or “The Unexciting”. Whatever you do, just un-plan to see it this weekend.

Rating: 1.0/5.0 After his similarly superstitious and sloppy “The Invisible.” it’s surprising that David S. Goyer would go back to a storytelling well that failed him the first time. That film was an ineffective trip to the other side and “The Unborn” is an ineffective film about a trip back.

Read Brian Tallerico’s full review of “The Unborn” in our reviews section. The poor girl haunted by a visitor from the other side in “The Unborn” is the gorgeous Casey Beldon (Yustman). This Megan Fox doppelganger is haunted by dreams of a young boy, a creepy dog, and a buried fetus. One night, she »
