DVD Releases: Nov. 3, 2009: See the Beast Within your Dark Mirror

2 November 2009 12:26 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

It's a Foy-a-palooza this week with several releases that have his name all over them like Beast Within, Mutants (not the French film of the same name), Night Watcher, and Sand Serpents. Mixed in with those are the more promising sounding Dark Mirror and a four-pack of Hitchcock classics that includes Suspicion, Strangers on a Train, The Wrong Man, and I Confess.

In addition, at the end of the list you'll find nine films that are being re-released in "keepcase" versions. The cream of that crop is definitely the original House of Wax with Vincent Price and the still effective giant ant fright flick Them!.

An 'Eclipse' First Look And Last-Minute Halloween Costumes In Today's Twitter-Wood

30 October 2009 5:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

"Kick-Ass" actress Chloe Moretz was among those tweeting good thoughts to Nicolas Cage and his family following the death of his father August Coppola this week. A literature professor and the brother of director Francis Ford Coppola, he reportedly died following a heart attack on Tuesday.

In other tweets, David Slade slipped a fresh image into his Twitter feed of actor Xavier Samuel from "Eclipse," which he says is the first look at Samuel's character Riley in the film. A couple of "Twilight" actors tweeted last minute contemplations over their Halloween costumes, while Edgar Wright may be giving up altogether and Russell Brand decried jack-o-lanterns as symbols for the season. Check out what they all had to say after the jump. It's in the Twitter-Wood report for October 30, 2009.

Anthony Hopkins As Odin (Not Brian Blessed) And Grant Morrison's Mystery Project In Today's Twitter Report

30 October 2009 11:31 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Much of the comic book Twitterverse had opinions on Anthony Hopkins newly announced casting as Odin in Marvel's upcoming "Thor" movie. A few more, including Jeff Parker and Andy Diggle seemed to be partial to him over Brian Blessed, who had previously been mentioned for the role.

Elsewhere in the Twitter Report feed, I don't usually include non-comics-related talent, but director Paul McGuigan mentioned that he and Grant Morrison are working on new project together in Scotland. No word on whether this is something for comics, film or both—but the Twitter Report will be watching. Check that out after the jump, along with a great Judge Dredd mask, how one DC editor is dressing for Halloween and which zombie film Ed Brubaker has been watching.

It's all in the Twitter Report for October 30, 2009.

The 25 Scariest Moments in Non-Horror Movies

27 October 2009 10:11 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

When you sit down to a horror film, you know, at least on a basic level, what you're getting into. Whether or not the movie delivers, what you've been promised, and what you're braced for or looking forward to, are scares. Which is why, when we look back on those truly traumatic movie memories, the titles that come to mind often are not horror films at all.

The most frightening movie moments can arrive out of nowhere, in the midst of where they shouldn't belong, catching you when you're vulnerable -- which is why there are a few alleged children's films on this list. But they can also creep up on you, working a different kind of dread, which is where some of the documentaries included below fit in. Fear is a funny thing. It comes in different varieties, it can work its way on you in unanticipated, and, as our collection here proves, »

Morgan Freeman Seeing ‘Red’ With Bruce Willis

20 July 2009 9:44 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

A couple of months ago we reported on the fact that Bruce Willis is still a man of action who has a slate of action films lined up for himself. One of those films is an adaptation of the Wildstorm/DC comic book entitled Red, and now it appears that Morgan Freeman is in talks to join Willis in the espionage thriller.

Writing brothers Eric and John Hoeber (who have written the adaptations of Whiteout and Alice) are set to pen the script for Red, which is to be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, G.I. Joe) and Mark Vahradian. Alongside them will be DC Comics exec Gregory Noveck, who will be serving as executive producer. No director has been brought on-board yet.

The original Red comic (written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Cully Hamner) was a three-book series published in 2003-04, and was about, “a former black-ops »

Push (2009) Movie Review

4 May 2009 11:51 AM, PDT | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Paul McGuigan’s “Push” is like the X-Men without the goofy outfits and codenames. That’s really the best way to describe the film, a mixture of comic book action-adventure and crime caper. Written by David Bourla and directed by McGuigan (“Lucky Number Slevin”), I’ve been interested in “Push” ever since the first time I heard about it years ago, although it appears as if the film’s plot has morphed somewhat, because the first time I heard about the film it sounded more like a heist flick with superpowered criminals. In any case, the finished product boasts a wonderful cast and is quite entertaining from beginning to end, so in that respect you can probably forgive it for being a tad too generic for its own good. The film stars Chris Evans (the Human Torch from the “Fantastic Four” films) as Nick Gant, a psychic who can move things with his mind. »

Excl: The I Scream Man Rolls On

23 March 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

To say progress on The I Scream Man has been an uphill crawl is an understatement. Things are looking positive, however, for the horror film we detailed in 2007 here . Director J.T. Mollner confirmed a bit of news that floated our way over the weekend. John Schneider and Christopher Eberts ( Lucky Number Slevin , Stag Night ) are on board as producers. "I am locked as director," says Mollner. "Mikos Zavros will be acting in it, and the two of us will be fine tuning the script. Either way, I Scream Man is still alive." There have been a slight casting adjustment. Schneider is now set to play the heroine's father, a roll that once went to Fred Ward. Crispin Glover and Dee Wallace, who have been on since the beginning, are still locked in.... »

The Kenneth Branagh Gameshow: Pick Your Thor!

17 March 2009 12:21 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Nikkie Finke reported yesterday about the upcoming Thor film and how Marvel and director Kenneth Branagh are facing a big challenge in trying to cast the lead character. In her report, she lists some of the candidates in the running to wield Mjolnir and become the God of Thunder.

Interestingly, she also points out that they are considering Josh Hartnett not only for the role of Loki, the God of Mischief, but to play The Mighty Thor himself. Now, I can see him giving an interesting performance as Loki but my suspension of belief doesn’t extend to him playing Thor.

While there’s some desire by Marvel to see Hartnett or another recognizable actor to play Thor, there’s also a lot of interest in casting an unknown. Personally, I don’t know which would be best for this movie but I liked the idea of casting a relatively »

Review: Push

14 March 2009 11:15 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Summit Entertainment has become the key film distributor for the youthful set. Late last year, they made a killing with "Twilight", and now they're back with "Push", an action thriller starring Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning.

In "Push", Evans and Fanning play individuals with special abilities who soon find themselves involved in a conspiracy while in Hong Kong. A clairvoyant Fanning is convinced that this particular conspiracy will ultimately take their lives. Soon, their on the run and find themselves battling Asian siblings with similar powers and a government official (Djimon Hounsou) with a hidden agenda.

Push was written and directed by Paul McGuigan, the film maker behind the stylized crime thriller Lucky Number Slevin. His latest actioneer plays like a low rent version of David Cronenberg's brilliant film " Scanners", only without the edge. It certainly has visual flair, but that's about it.

While "Push" isn't necessarily slow, it »

Paul McGuigan Helming Robert Capa Film

17 February 2009 10:51 PM, PST | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Paul McGuigan, director of Lucky Number Slevin and more recently the Chris Evans superhero flick Push, has signed on to direct a film based on the life of famed Hungarian photojournalist Robert Capa. Born Andre Friedmann in early-20th century Budapest, Capa memorialized many conflicts, including the Spanish Civil War and World War II. The colorful journalist also helped found Magnum Photos and traveled in glamorous circles that included a friendship with John Steinbeck and an affair with Ingrid Bergman. Capa, who was killed in 1954 when he stepped on a land mine during the Indochina War, perhaps is best known for his photos of D-Day. He was one of the few photographers to land on the beach in Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944, and capture images of the Allied invasion. The project is being developed by Pierce Brosnan’s Irish DreamTime. The company has a first-look deal with MGM, but there »

Starring: Dakota Fanning, Chris Evans, Camilla Belle

Studio/Run Time: Summit Entertainment, 111 mins.

Listless superpower flick can't sort out story

By turns frantic and somber, the resolutely convoluted thriller Push dashes from genre to genre in search of a reason to exist. Directed in a rush by Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin), the movie follows a vaguely superheroic clan of misfits pursued through Hong Kong by a government agency—American, of course—that seeks to assemble them into a dream army. Enter nominal dude protagonist (Chris Evans, pretty and vacant) as he teams up with a precocious teen (Dakota Fanning) after Uncle Sam comes calling for an escaped test subject (Camilla Belle) with the ability to control minds. »

He’s Just Not That into You tops the charts as Panther has no claws.

8 February 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

Sometimes, as bad as it may sound, one is almost thankful that a film bombs out at the box office. Much-beloved classics, especially in a series of films like “The Pink Panther,” should never be remade. I say one would be thankful because perhaps they won’t add another abomination to their lineup. Now, the follow-up to the reincarnation, which stars a buffet of talented actors, has debuted in fourth spot with a paltry $12 million from 3,243 venues, averaging just $3,700 per theatre. The first may have made over $80 million domestically simply from crowd curiosity – you can’t pull that move twice. Sorry fellas. Instead, the more deserved contender in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “He’s Just Not That into You” topped the charts with an estimated $27.4 million. The film starring Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Connelly, Justin Long, Drew Barrymore and Kevin Connolly opened into 3,175 locations and averaged $8,650 per theatre. »
