From Movies Blog: Remember kids, the truth is always far, far stranger than fiction. It was a little more than a year ago that we found out the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon series "Yogi Bear" would be getting a big screen treatment. There was no casting announced or anything like that; just that the project was happening with "Surf's Up" director Ash Brannon at the helm and that it would feature a mix of live-action and CG animation.
Well today, the plot thickened. Variety reports that Anna Faris, Justin Timberlake and Dan Aykroyd are all in negotiations to join the cast of the movie, which will now be directed by "Journey to the Center of the Earth" helmer Eric Brevig from a script by Brad Copeland ("Wild Hogs").

I used to catch "Yogi Bear" frequently on the USA Network's Saturday morning animation block, "Cartoon Express." That's where I met all of my Hanna-Barbera friends in fact. »

VFX, or visual effects, has become the latest buzzword in the post-production industry with studios, big and small, vying for lucrative jobs in Bollywood and Hollywood. When audiences ventured into theaters this weekend they decided that they didn't need an umbrella to weather Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. The latest film from Sony Pictures Animation easily captured the number one spot at the box office for the second-to-last weekend of September 2009, making an estimated $30.1 million dollars from 3,119 screens. Compared to other offerings from Sony Pictures Animation, Meatballs is the company's best opening ever; 2006's Open Season netted $23 million in its opening weekend and 2007's Surf's Up could only grab $17.6m in its summertime berth. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs looks like a strong candidate to be Spa's first film to cross $100 million domestic.
Matt Damon as The Informant! also made a good debut. The latest Steven Soderbergh picture has attracted good reviews and that translated into a $10.5m opening. The second weekend out for Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself saw »

It was meat feast for Sony this weekend when its latest CG animation Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs stormed to the top of the Us weekend box office, opening on a chunky $30.1m. Over half of its receipts came from 3D screenings.Inspired by a (presumably very) popular children's picturebook, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs eclipsed the feats of Sony's previous best 'toon opening, Open Season, to rack up the highest ever September animation opening. After the flop that was Surf's Up, it's timely encouragement that the studio can compete against the monsters, nut-chasing squirrels or talking dogs of its rival animators, albeit on a smaller scale. It was a so-so weekend for Steven Soderbergh's latest, The Informant!. Grosses of $10.5m may have been dwarfed by Ocean's Thirteen, but looks like good business for the offbeat whistleblower comedy, especially after Che's opening of $61,000.Nothing much was happening »

But first, she had to get rid of Kiptyn -- and Reid! Meet the Parents: Ed was the first to interact with the potential in-laws. Cousin Tori looked at Ed like he had cancer when he explained his leave of absence. Mom grilled him with 66 questions but said he gave "really good answers." He asked dad for permission to propose and his dad said if Ed was the last man standing, he’d be "doing somersaults." Then, Ed was forced into a coconut bra to hula. Kiptyn was next and like a slick politician he had all the right answers. Jillian's mom thought he "was more like Jillian and a free spirit. »

Yes, we're aware that's a cheeseburger.
Cinematical got a sneak peek at several of the scenes from Sony's upcoming CGI film Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs recently, and about the worst thing we can say about it is that it's Pixar ... ish. Which is a bit like saying, "Gee, your watch sure looks like a Rolex." Not entirely insulting. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, and Cloudy looks extremely sharp, the jokes are funny, and it made me very hungry. Plus it has a great voice cast featuring Bill Hader, Anna Faris, Bruce Campbell, Neal Patrick Harris, Andy Samberg, Tracy Morgan, James Caan, Bobb'e J. Thompson, Will Forte and Mr. T (!). So who's complaining?
Writer/directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, creators of the gone-before-its-time Clone High (which I can't praise enough -- unfortunately it's only available via bootleg, or in Canada), took us through the story »

Paramount Pictures has hired writer Jeremy Garelick (The Break-Up) to write & direct co-creator Michael Berk's TV series Baywatch. The plan is to fashion a big screen comedy based on the sexy lifeguards who patrol the beaches of California.
According to Variety, the potential franchise feature will be co-financed by Paramount and Cold Spring Pictures, financing arm of Montecito Picture Co.
"It felt like the template to do a movie that was similar to Stripes and Police Academy, the comedies I loved, growing up," Garelick told Variety.
"Rather than trying to pitch the tone, I figured it would be easier to write the first act to convey who these characters were," he added.
Contrafilm's Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson will produce along with Berk, Doug Schwartz, Greg Bonann and Michelle Berk, while Montecito's Ivan Reitman, Tom Pollock, Jeff Clifford and Joe Medjuck are also involved in producing capacities.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs opens today and that means all the other studios (mainly Sony Pictures) are putting out there new trailers for their upcoming animated movies. In addition to the new trailer for Planet 51, Sony has debuted the second full trailer for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs featuring the voices of Bill Hader as Flint Lockwood and Anna Faris as Sam. In comparison to Planet 51, I actually want to see this one just a bit more. Something about all that food and the comedy, it just gets me. Though I'm worried that like Sony Animation's last movie, Surf's Up, it won't be as good as the trailers make it seem. DreamWorks Animation is moving forward with a new untitled ghost project that is competing for a fourth-quarter 2012 release slot, report the trades. Jon Vitti (Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Simpsons Movie) has signed on to write the script for the film, referred to internally as Boo U. The project will be directed by Tony Leondis, who last helmed the animated John Cusack and Steve Buscemi comedy Igor. The story line centers on a ghost who is bad at his job and must return to ghost school. In late May, DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said a "super secret ghost project" was on the books for a potential late-2012 slot. Boo U. is that project. The studio’s 2012 slate also includes the Shrek spin-off Puss in Boots and a third Madagascar movie. Another ghost-centric film, referred to as Freakers, was being written by Joe Syracuse & Lisa Addario (Surf's Up) and centers »

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has admitted accidentally charging two pornographic films to the taxpayer as part of her expenses. Smith submitted a £67 bill for Virgin Media in June last year, which included two unnamed 18-rated features watched in her home on April 1 and April 6 at £5 each. It also included £3.50 to watch Surf's Up and two payments of £3.75 for two viewings of Ocean's 13. A friend told Pa: "To say she's angry with her husband is an understatement. Jacqui was not there when these films were watched. She's furious and mortified." In a statement, Smith said: (more) »
