Officially, Reggie is regarded as a Sea Otter.

Cody's name is a reference to Mavericks, a famous surfing spot.

Jane Krakowski was supposed to do one of Big Z's girlfriends voices, the scenes with her in it were recorded, but later scrapped because the director Chris Buck thought that it was focusing too much on Big Z when he wanted the story to be focused on Cody Maverick. One of Big Z's girlfriends are still visible in the movie.

There are numerous background characters, the Australian surfer with feathers overgrowing his eyes is named Rory Nubbins, the Japanese surfer is named Tatsuhi Kobayashi and the Brazilian surfer is named Renato.

The score (not the original soundtrack) is named the Original Ocean Picture Score, it is a limited edition of 1,000 copies Nation wide, and has 23 tracks. It is not available in any store.
